My husband sees me walking around the house quietly and knows I'm thinking about changing something and I can hear him sweating...LOL. I'm really enjoying your videos, very honest and insightful.
LOL... I've always loved designing. I designed, had architectural drawings done and had a house built when I was 30. Did I really know what I was doing? Nope. But, I knew what I liked and had thought it through. Our contractor was an 'old guy' of 50 (That seems young to me now.), who had only built spec houses and fought me all of the way through. End of story... He was so proud of it that he asked multiple times to bring people through to show them 'his work'. The experience was a great lesson for me. Do your homework. Get professional help. Make adjustments when the contractor makes mistakes. Hold on to your your sense of humor, follow your passion and enjoy the journey. It was one of the most creative and fun things I've ever done... Right up there with having children, which were also 9 month projects. :)
You are so right about the new windows! Mine were all replaced a few years ago and I’m still waiting on the “savings.” Great video on staying true to yourself and style when designing your home. Tfs!
Just painted one of my bathrooms and added a fancy mirror frame. I was scared since i never used a pain roller before but now that is done its my favorite bathroom in the house! Ty
I am a think outslde the box kind of person... I definitively have always done me... most of knowing, is a gift...I love making where I live, a home that looks like no other, just me... that really is the fun of all of it, right?❤❤❤❤❤❤
Let me tell you this; this is maybe my top my first my favorite video from HoV by far, gosh I am so ENRICHED. My goodness; so glad I am a member her. I am watching in 2022 and you are grateful for 50000 the irony is now you are grateful for almost 250000🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾. I joined 2020 and I am grateful
Loved this video!!! Maybe do a part 2 on more regrets your clients have shared? What other watch-outs should we be looking for? Thank you for the quality content!
The widows thing is a great tip. We are remodeling a 1960’s home in Florida and the windows are huge. I don’t want to replace then and I think we won’t now.
Oh the hardwood floors! I did that one on my last house. Sellers had carpets. Didn’t realize how much the floors needed doing until walk though. Had already sold condo and had to move in next day. Once the furniture is in it’s not getting done or it’s a HUGE pain. Learn from our pain. Refinish the floors first!!!
And this is how we learn. 🥰 Thank you. Be brave enough to do me! All of these were such good tips. Happy Fathers BTW...I replaced my windows. My house needed it for sure. I wanted Black, I was talked out of it. Well, "do you"really resonated with me.
Deborah Mac I just saw a video where a women spray painted her own windows. Was very inexpensive and looks great, if u really want black I would give that a try here is the link. instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE3OTAzMDMyMDI3MzkwMTUw?igshid=tx8fe5c9hxzb
Okay, you are totally right on the 'don't listen to your contractor for design advice'. My contractor said to me 'this is what everyone is doing right now'. I said 'I don't care what everyone else is doing'. Which leads me into your #5 of 'do me' and that's exactly what I did and I love everything in my reno.
I totally understand about the windows and I feel your pain! I made the same mistake. We also moved back to Atlanta about 4 years ago from overseas/Manhattan and bought a 1965 ranch in Sandy Springs. Had never been updated. Unfortunately windows were the 1st thing the contractor recommended doing ... something I wasn’t contemplating being obsessed with a kitchen reno. White mullions inside the panes!!! Ugh has totally influenced how I’m going to update the outside.
When my husband and I first moved in to our home, we had nothing other than some shelving and a coffee table, so I got to start from scratch decorating wise. I made a point to buy very versatile and timeless furniture, even if it wasn’t my absolute favorite. I did this because I knew I could always change the knickknacks, pillows, Wood stains, and other surface accessories depending on the trend I’ve wanted to play w/ at that time. If I would have gone w/ the couch that was I impulsively was in love w/ at the time I’d be stuck in only sleek/cold decorating styles. As of now I’ve done mid century modern, southwest modern, and am now working on transitioning to French modern. Which btw is pretty tricky to do considering it’s almost the polar opposite from southwest 😹
Yes, that was my MO for most big pieces so thankfully that was good... other than those brown chairs... and a dining table ... LOL! Those styles are tricky to combine but a cohesive color is always an easy way to blend styles!
Thank you!! Your channel is so helpful. I’ve been learning a lot which is helping w/ the transition. I’m also just collecting pieces for the French modern look that I’m not putting on display yet because as of now they’d clash too much. Also I have a chair that I spent way too much money on and only worked for the mid century modern look. It now resides in our game room, waiting for a good purpose. I feel so guilty lol
We are planning to move back to the US after living in Europe for 18 years and your videos are giving me so much courage! I think we have the same bathroom mirror as well! 😄 Loberon? Anyway, this video was super encouraging. Thank you!
Great advice Valentina. I'm just in the process of making changes to my house which I purchased in November 2019. Many glitches in my remake especially with the virus and being so overwhelmed by the whole idea of having to set up a house on my own. At least you made the decisions, right or wrong, I froze but I'm now starting to deice thanks to your website and others like you. I'm new to You Tube I just never realized all this info was here just waiting for people like me. Thank you again for what you do and adding a little comedy to boot.
Oh all too familiar with the if you just listen to your gut. I’m going through the same with my husband right now over gutter color, fascia and soffits! Thanks for the advice!!!
Merci Valentina, great advices for all of us. We all make mistake and it is so wonderful to learn from someone that can save us time, money and lots of regrets. Your house looks gorgeous my dear. Have a great day and again, thank you. Be well.
I'm with you and the windows. I'd give just about anything to be able to paint my windows black. But that's not happening with new vinyl windows.😢 Thank you for all the advice and help. I truly love your channel.
If you can't paint your new windows because they're vinyl, Sherwin-Williams makes vinyl-safe paint (doesn't absorb much sun/heat). Now, they don't have a pure black, but they do have a couple of colors that come pretty close to black. "Cobweb" being the closest. It's like a dark charcoal.
Hi Valentina! Love your videos but especially loved this one. I am a design consultant and sort of the “middle woman” between customer and contractor, so I feel your pain.
That's fantastic that you will take on consulting jobs! Everyone in my local area will not do that kind of work. They want total control of the design from beginning to end and because they only shop high end places, oooooh boy, on top of their fees it becomes VERY expensive! So, hallelujah, I have found you! :)
We've spent several sessions with a draftsperson to draw up plans for our new house. She has been wonderful at suggesting and critiquing (in the nicest way) little things (and BIG things), and we're very glad she did because we love the changes--on paper. How beneficial would it be for us to have a designer take a look at the preliminary drawing BEFORE we finalize and send the plan to engineering?
I am a designer and so very much appreciate this video. I have been watching your videos for months. I have my own story and you have been very much an inspiration, thank you. I started watching you because I was a stay at home mom for 20 years a really a soccer Mom both my girls oyed college and I coached them for 11 yrs (I had to learn because I had never played) During those years I gave up a lot of myself. I just did with out and tried to make everyone else happy. Now that I am working and doing my own home it was your video on Scandinavian style and your individuality that attracted me to your videos. It was just encouraging to know you have had your own journey to get were you are wish you all the success hopefully those Target deal will come. I am very interested in your french, scandinavian style. . Thank you!
House of Valentina aaarrrg! We bought our forever house through a builder. As it was being built we worked with his designer, picking colours, finishes like floors, tiles cabinets, counters, fixtures and so on. It was awful. She bulldozed us into choosing what her vision for the house was. I was so disappointed! Since moving in we have changed out cabinet doors and hardware in the kitchen and bathrooms, changed sink in the powder room, changed faucets...and more. What a waste of money! If I had the money I would do a lot more but my husband is tired of throwing money at it.
My husband thinks I'm INSANE whenever I want to change something. Like, I paint the walls and I don't like the finish or I buy a piece of furniture that is functional and fits the space but I don't like the color and I want to paint it. He will refuse to rehang a picture in a different spot. Thanks for reassuring me I'm not crazy this is normal! Things don't always look as good as you thought it would or come out as planned.
Wish I had seen your video a year sooner I also let my contractor convince me that my floors would be too slippery and now I'm stuck with something I do not love but I'm definitely taking in consideration the rest of your advice I still have time to rescue my house thank you Valentina 🥰👍
Hi Valentina - thanks for this video. You are always so honest. In your defense - it's hard to do "you" when you're in the midst of a huge change like you were in. Just sayin'.
Valentina Great video! We moved into our new house 2 years ago. I love our house so much. I don’t want to go anywhere . Haha! I did me, I love warm cozy colors. My husband and I own a floor and window coverings store. I get to see what is trending with colors. We installed a beautiful travertine tile. It’s classic and timeless. It will look beautiful in twenty years. We installed carpet in all the bedrooms and I love walking on carpet in cold snowy days. In the window coverings we bought PowerView. They are wonderful just press the remote and they all go up or down. Best investment ever. I love them. I don’t think I would change any thing that we did. We raised 5 children and they are all adults now. Instead of downsizing we built a 5 thousand square feet house including garage and beautiful porches. We’re enjoying our beautiful house so much and so are our children. Thank you for your great videos.
Love your design videos and helpful suggestions on how to decorate!! This mistake video has to be one of my favorites because it tells each of us that design mistakes happen to everyone ;) ...Helpful insights to avoid. Most of all, reminding us to “do you” when decorating and not always following the trend is invaluable. Thanks !!
Thanks for all the advice! We are building in a year and I have been debating about black bs white windows. I really want a light breezy space. I’m not sure if black windows would add to that or make it look like a different style. Ah, all the little decisions 🤦🏼♀️
Thank uou so much. This helped so much as we are building a house now 🙏🏼 So grateful for sharing your thoughts. Thank you. By the way you are stunning ✨
I have new windows on order.... If you saw my home you would agree that I need new windows. They are 30 years old and sooooo bad you can hear a pin drop outside even with them closed!!! The heat and A/C work overtime to keep the house even remotely temerate. So yeah, sometimes you DO need new windows. Cant wait to get them. More comfortable house and I WONT HEAR PEOPLE TALKING ON THE SIDEWALK. PS; love your channel and your videos. EXCELLENT CONTENT. I know you can't cater to everyone's design style but I would love you to so a video on minimalist style!
One big regret... we let our contractor talk us into carpet in the bathroom back in 1996- “it’ll be so soft on your feet”. Uhhhhh. Gross! That didn’t last long!
If everyone Shared you on their FB page That would be awesome!😁 🥂 to getting to 100k subscribers! Let’s face it, we all need a little “House of Valentina” in our lives!😎😊 Who’s with me? Share on YOUR FB Pages V peeps
so I am getting ready to list our home and I have a main living room when you walk in with only two chairs do you think I should invest the money into furnishing it?
I discovered your channel a couple of months ago and absolutely love it. Your family are awesome and the laughter is well...is there a better word than infectious at the moment? Are you able to do a more in depth video that goes through the impracticalities of some design choices like things that are hard to clean or keep dust free (e.g. elaborate chandeliers or open shelves), I heard on one video that black taps (faucets) show up the dirt as dark wood floors apparently do. Maybe things that are more suited to designing homes for middle-age people so doorhandles and pulls that are arthritic friendly. If you don’t like climbing ladders, don’t have high ceilings for cleaning windows, spiderwebs or changing lightbulbs. I found when can lights first came out, I got a lot of migraines from the excessive light in my eyes. I know these sound like logical things but I’m sure you’ll have a broader list than I do. Hope this doesn’t read like complaining about trends, I just like things that are well designed. Don’t get me started on sons and swivel chairs. Have a great day and hello from Australia!
That's a great idea!! ( I have black taps and they do show dust a bit more but it doesn't bother me!) BUT design HAS to be practical first. I purposely bought higher seat furniture so my older guest could get up easier (my grandmother fell trying to get up out of our modern sofa one christmas (omg. It was horrifying.)
Oh no, your poor Grandmother. We have shiplap that goes up to your upper arms and it has a moulding on top that has sharp corners that stick out where it is moulded around outer corners. I’ve had to tape layers of pool noodles to the corners so when my Mum comes to visit she doesn’t hurt herself on them as she has Meniere’s disease and can’t judge the safe distance between the corners going into the kitchen. She’s on blood thinners so the bruises are horrendous. She’s not in my state often and we’ve killed a few arms on them but it’s a massive design flaw. She complains no end about it even when they are taped up so well. Also designing the fridge or pantry right next to a walkway stops people going in and out of the kitchen and has been the ire of the husband for years.
Looking to remodel kitchen and master bathroom in our beautiful, but a little worn and outdated 1994 house. Wondering about hiring a designer or do we use the designer from the cabinet shop? They are large spaces with an open floor plan.
I love the virtual design session ideas! How does it work? Is it an hour on a call from start to finish? Or can we send over materials like floor plan, pieces we're considering, and then be on the call for 30 mins? Will we get anything after the call in terms of mood boards or product recommendations? I have a den/living room project where I've already done a lot of work in terms of pulling together floor plans and getting things selected but I need the final mile help in terms of-- this is the best layout, you should buy these things, etc. Maybe I should book 2 hours? Would appreciate any thoughts :) (Also I painted my den Kendall Charcoal from Benjamin Moore and my only regret was not going darker!)
It's purchased hourly, but everyone sends in everything they can beforehand so we can make the most of your time and if there is time left over we use that to source or send back ideas. If you book extra time we can help you pull the entire space together and even do a floorplan for you. It's up to you, but most people buy a couple hours unless they just want paint suggestions or something that is quick.
DOUBLE YES about the windows if your house is old! Those beautiful, wavy glass, single paned windows are being replaced SOOO fast now-a-days and the "efficient", ugly new windows are not money saving, no matter what the sales people tell you!! A better investment would be thick, double lined, floor to ceiling curtains and a good re-calk around the window frame.
I am building a home right now and I am stuck on how to design the fireplace in the family room. It is the focus point of the area. I have no walls or anything yet just the plans.the framing is starting tomorrow. Would you be able to help with that?
Entire house in hardwood floors - worst decision ever. They creak, no matter what. Everyone knows where you are every minute of every day. No sneaking around after everyone goes to sleep because everyone knows where you are as the squawking floors wake everyone up including the dog. Wood floors are hard to keep clean. VERY hard. I hate my wood floors. Wish I had just done Armstrong vinyl in every room. : (
I agree. Love the look of hardwood but they are not low maintenance. Had the fake hardwood and they showed every spot. I guess nothing is truly low maintenance.
I've been thinking about it! I even thought about having my contractor put grids OVER the glass... but then there is the sides of the window too... ugh!!!
Doctors go to other doctors. Lawyers hire other lawyers. Professionals often hire other professionals from their own industry, because they can't always take an objective look at their own situation.
OK - so we are building a new house - the contractor says everyone wants black windows ...and i was thinking how pretty your white windows are.....and you say you want to paint them black.....
My husband sees me walking around the house quietly and knows I'm thinking about changing something and I can hear him sweating...LOL. I'm really enjoying your videos, very honest and insightful.
Your comment is hilarious it made me crack up so hard 😂

I love that so much! The perfect attitude and sentiment!
You know the mistakes just made you even that much better of a designer! You just have talents that are so inspirational. Thank u for what you do!!
That’s why I try new ideas on myself first! 😂
Thank you for sharing your mistakes. I adore you even more because of them!!!
Yes, hire a designer. Best advice ever. I did and I'm so happy.
You are so right about the new windows! Mine were all replaced a few years ago and I’m still waiting on the “savings.” Great video on staying true to yourself and style when designing your home. Tfs!
Ugh!! It’s tough when you spend so much on them!
Thank you! Glad to know I am not the only one who regrets choices.
Just painted one of my bathrooms and added a fancy mirror frame. I was scared since i never used a pain roller before but now that is done its my favorite bathroom in the house! Ty
Yay!!! That makes me so happy!
When we built our first house our contractor suggested putting a jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom!! 😑 Great video.
I am a think outslde the box kind of person... I definitively have always done me... most of knowing, is a gift...I love making where I live, a home that looks like no other, just me... that really is the fun of all of it, right?❤❤❤❤❤❤

Oh man. Yes, a good inspection is basically EVERYTHING
And this is how we learn. 🥰 Thank you. Be brave enough to do me! All of these were such good tips. Happy Fathers BTW...I replaced my windows. My house needed it for sure. I wanted Black, I was talked out of it. Well, "do you"really resonated with me.

One of my biggest regrets was getting sliders on my front porch I feel as though I am in a fishbowl!

Very insightful. I’m in the process of remodeling my kitchen and have no clue on where to start. I like “think outside the box”. Thank you
My big mistake was hiring the wrong contractor. Thank you for your video.
I loved this video. The hardwood floor installation here was worse than moving. I am still trying to find my things. 😂
ugh! You know what I mean, then!
Thanks for sharing. How do you remodel a home you have no clue at all what to do with it.
Hi, Valentina! You look fabulous! You’re all aglow.🥰
🥰 thank you! 😘

Mines the same way. He thinks I'm crazy until it's finished and then he's all WOW this actually looks great haha you're not alone.
Really appreciate the candor! Great video!
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
Oh, and I love your nail polish color.
Oh thank you!

your house is beautiful!
Hi Valentina - thanks for this video. You are always so honest. In your defense - it's hard to do "you" when you're in the midst of a huge change like you were in. Just sayin'.
It was completely overwhelming, nothing felt right. Sometimes it still doesn’t. But I always learn something through it!

Beautiful top. I did the gray theme too which was very nice; just no pizazz.
I love your channel! Thank you for your very pertinent info! Also, very brave of you to post this!
I am always my own guinea pig so it’s always a process of learning.
Thanks for all the advice! We are building in a year and I have been debating about black bs white windows. I really want a light breezy space. I’m not sure if black windows would add to that or make it look like a different style. Ah, all the little decisions 🤦🏼♀️
Love this video.
What valuable advice! Thanks soooooooo much!
Thank uou so much. This helped so much as we are building a house now 🙏🏼 So grateful for sharing your thoughts. Thank you. By the way you are stunning ✨
I'm almost done with my renovation for my flat and I have made most of these mistakes ... :(
Oh no! 🤦🏽♀️ I feel your pain!
Ok, i will be setting up a virtual appt. For the exterior of my house
So valuable insight, thank you for sharing!
Love all your videos , I will love to sign for one hour tips ideas
Awesome thought through list! l love you more and more everyday ❤️
Great tips, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this great video!
You have a new follower! Thank you SO much!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I did the SAME thing in regards to windows. 😢😢😢 (and many other things)...
😩 I’ve got some great white window ideas so I’ll have to share those too!
Can you help picking paint colors, I really need to know what color to paint as it will be a big expense?
Yes, that’s one of the most frequent requests that we get.
Love your videos. So informative. Fun to watch
One big regret... we let our contractor talk us into carpet in the bathroom back in 1996- “it’ll be so soft on your feet”. Uhhhhh. Gross! That didn’t last long!
Great advice !
If everyone Shared you on their FB page
That would be awesome!😁
🥂 to getting to 100k subscribers!
Let’s face it,
we all need a little
“House of Valentina” in our lives!😎😊
Who’s with me?
Share on YOUR FB Pages V peeps
so I am getting ready to list our home and I have a main living room when you walk in with only two chairs do you think I should invest the money into furnishing it?
Enjoyed this video!! I may call you for an hour! 🤗
Thank you and I’d love that!
The windows are my biggest pain as well! I wanted black and they are beige! BEIGE! And I can’t paint them.
A good excuse to go with a creamy beige on the house?
House of Valentina i can’t do it lol. My fave wall color is a smoky black green color. 😅
How does Zoom work? Would I need to have a computer to do it?
DOUBLE YES about the windows if your house is old! Those beautiful, wavy glass, single paned windows are being replaced SOOO fast now-a-days and the "efficient", ugly new windows are not money saving, no matter what the sales people tell you!! A better investment would be thick, double lined, floor to ceiling curtains and a good re-calk around the window frame.
How about paying for one of those designer websites? Do you recommend that?
I am building a home right now and I am stuck on how to design the fireplace in the family room. It is the focus point of the area. I have no walls or anything yet just the plans.the framing is starting tomorrow. Would you be able to help with that?
You can still paint your windows black!! With a little bit of electrical tape to cover up those white panels, no one will be the wiser! Go for it!
Do you still do these zoom calls?
Entire house in hardwood floors - worst decision ever. They creak, no matter what. Everyone knows where you are every minute of every day. No sneaking around after everyone goes to sleep because everyone knows where you are as the squawking floors wake everyone up including the dog. Wood floors are hard to keep clean. VERY hard. I hate my wood floors. Wish I had just done Armstrong vinyl in every room. : (
I agree. Love the look of hardwood but they are not low maintenance. Had the fake hardwood and they showed every spot. I guess nothing is truly low maintenance.
I think you can wrap your windows in black aluminum.
Why can’t you fake the windows? They make great products (like car pinstripes) that you could overlay on the windows!?
I've been thinking about it! I even thought about having my contractor put grids OVER the glass... but then there is the sides of the window too... ugh!!!
Doctors go to other doctors. Lawyers hire other lawyers. Professionals often hire other professionals from their own industry, because they can't always take an objective look at their own situation.
To not be able to do floors first 😞
I have noticed painting one wall in bedrooms especially with all light grey walls ( a new house) makes a huge difference
Painting it a different color I meant
Giggle giggle giggle 🤭
Where from Europe are you from?
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Brooklyn and Bailey twins 👯♀️ u will pass for their mom
OK - so we are building a new house - the contractor says everyone wants black windows
...and i was thinking how pretty your white windows are.....and you say you want to paint them black.....
