Installing an automatic bilgepump (without a new throughull) HOSPITAL?[PART 1] Sailing Vinderla #3

  • In this episode I figured out I was going to tackle some indoor projects while waiting for better weather.
I decided to finally install the automatic bilgepump I bought last year, because I figured out it should be possible to use the existing house by using a Y-valve.
The pump is a Whale SuperSup 650 with an automatic level sensor and it is super submergable. It also has a one-way-valve built in.
This is more of an "how to not do it" as I was unlucky and stabbed myself in the thumb, ended up getting 4 stitches in the hospital.
Stay tuned for the next episode, where I finish the project and show how it's done!
I live aboard my Sweden Yachts C34 from 1980 while going to school in Trondheim. My dream is to sail around the world. First step is buying the boat and learning how to sail.
    That's where I am at.

Love that you stopped to buy parts for the boat on THE WAY TO the hospital! I’ve had 2 supersub 650s fail, as others have said. It sits underwater and eventually dies. Also, whale sell a really nice inline check valve. It’s a rubber valve very easy for the pump to push through. You could have avoided the Y valve it you had just 2 of these check valves one after each pump, and maybe a shutoff valve to block off the whale if the check valve fails (fail open) and you need to manually pump

Nice job on the installation - should be working out! Always good to have easy access to the Previous owner for some input! Fair winds and calm seas you guys!

Thank you! Yes it works like a charm, but had to cut the episode short. Next one is coming up soon. The previous owner cares about Vinderla, so I get lots of good tips from him :-D Fair winds!

@@SailingVinderla That is incredibly helpful. Our PO (Previous Owner) sadly left us with bad spirits keeping lots of the gear that was on the list upon signing the contract... haven't heard from him since...

Starting to really enjoy these, it's fascinating to see what's happening next door at night 😅 I'm excited to see what's happening in the next episode, despite the fact that I was there for most of it so I already know 😅

I think you removed the flow back valve, so some water will return to the bilge from the hose.

Thanks for the comment Knut! I used the flow-back-valve to splice the hose mid-way up. And the new pump has one built in it as well, so now it's two flow-back-valves! You will see in the next episode, coming in a few days =) But I might install one more at the end of the hose for the manual pump as it was before.

I strongly suggest you check this pump every time you put to sea. I have just inspected mine after install 2 years ago to discover the threaded section has disintegrated, causing the pump body to separate spontaneously even though it looked sound. The plastic thread is not up to the job. I have contacted Whale and await their feedback. You can imagine if the pump started to operate there would be a catastrophic failure as water would access the electric housing and short out the motor. Personally I shall be steering clear of all Whale products until I get their feedback.
