I was just a year away from becoming draft-eligible when this move came out. I never expected that we would get through the Cold War without actually having WWIII. Anyone that didn’t live through some significant period of the Cold War just cannot ever understand the fatalism and nihilism of kids of the 70’s and early 80’s.
That's how kids play. Add play station . Chemistry sets, science projects on rainy days. Walk through fields to find arrowheads from 1800's. Making weapons. Yeah, good times.

I think aside from the Wolverines, Colonel Bella was one of my favorite characters in this movie. Despite how he was a villain, Bella wasn't heartless and cruel towards the Wolverines. Bella even said he was an insurgent himself and he sympathized with them. And ultimately, it was his sympathy that won out and he showed mercy on Jed and Matt. That's why I love his character.

Saw this movie when I was about 8 years old at the drive in theater with my dad and brother. After seeing it I think I lived the rest of my childhood preparing for when this would happen for real. I always took a moment to take a look outside for parachutes in any class in school that I had with outward facing windows, LOL :)
I was the same way. I married a woman from Romania and I told her how convinced I was as a kid that the Russians would invade someday. She said that if I had said that to someone from any Warsaw Pact country, they would have thought it was hilarious. After seeing Ivan up close, they weren't too impressed.
The parachutes coming down was awesome and iconic. I was about your age when I watched it with my dad, and I remember thinking that the only think keeping an enemy army from invading in this fashion was simpy their decision not to. I couldn't understand how we could keep them from just dropping out of the sky. Scary as Hell, still an awesome movie.
I loved the fact that this movie didn't just take U.S. military equipment and paint a big red star on it! They did an excellent job with the T-72, ZSU-23-4, BTR-60, SA-7 etc. The only equipment flaw I noticed were the blue and yellow RPG-7 rounds

I saw this as a Junior in high school. Upon graduation I joined the Army, paratrooper medic. Did that for 4 years then another 4 as a Cav Scout. Moved to the Air Force after that and retired in 2019 (32 years of service). Yes, watching this original in the hight of the Cold War, then putting on a uniform for real about a year later was much more impressive than watching the remake so many years later.

We just got back from a rotation in Sinai, Egypt (MFO) and just turned in our "Chocolate Chips" Deserrt BDU's. Not until I renlisted did I change to 19D in 1992. I guess the short answer is no, I wasn't a part of Desert Shield or Desert Storm. Many 19D's I ended up with did, they were from units from the 82nd and 3rd ACR.
My son and I watched Red Dawn a hundred times growing up. He went on to join the US Army, infantry, Ranger School, two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, but now is man of the cloth as a Major in the Reserves. I think I brainwashed him a little. Even though the quote has been discredited, Admiral Yamamoto's response to the question about invading America says it all. " I fear there would be rifle behind every blade of grass.” 20 million Ar 15's and counting. "Wolverines!!"
This was a great movie---I was 14 when it came out & it was so groundbreaking because there were quite a few 1980's-ish films where kids were major players--but it was hoaky at best. But Red Dawn made the audience believe it could happen and without aliens or magical intervention. These rag-tag kids had only hunting rifles in the beginning (until they killed a guy & got a weapons upgrade) and this is 1 of the only movies where people took gear off fallen enemies. Real guerrilla tactics.

Now imagine 25,000 foreign troops conquering half of all of the land in Nebraska and Kansas in less than one month. There would be so many people joining the U.S. military that either one of 2 things would need to happen........... 1) Basic training is shortened to NEEDING ONLY combat and survivalism training (everything else would be done by those that are already serving)............... 2) 50% of all people that would attempt to join would be kicked out by force within 2 weeks. If you can't muster doing "this" and "that" and "some other damn thing" within 7 days then we don't have time to wait for you to come up to speed. If you don't know how to cook out in the woods we don't need you. If you can't walk 10 miles with a 20 pound pack on your back without stopping for lunch, you aren't good enough. I ttly agree that the original is so much better than the remake. I live in the city/area where this picture was filmed and still to this day remember to this day the director and crew creating so many parts/scenes of the movie. Meeting many of the primary cast and crew was a big bonus. Funny how I will remember them much more than they would remember who I was. An experience I will never forget
Whereas most World War 3 films focus on the Armageddon aspect, this one focuses more on the characters, with Armageddon part kept in the background (the Powers Booth character reveals that there was a nuclear war between Russia and China but unlike other apocolyptic type films, the nuclear conflict aspect of the story is never given any more detail beyond Powers Booth's comment).
This movie is full of mistakes. Charlie's hat blows off because the fan off camera was making the smoke look like it's coming from the rocket propelled grenade. 😁
That was a great character (you could see doubt in his eyes throughout the film, it was top notch acting) and that last scene was a great moment in the film.
Maybe I was just young (although I'm the same age as C Thomas Howell) but I never saw this movie as a political commentary. To me, it was a great character development story. How each character reacted to this situation was fascinating. Some were weak. Some went psycho. Some just died quietly on a swing set and the world never missed them at all except for a name in paint on a rock somewhere. This wasn't a story (at least to me) of how we got there and capitalism vs communism. This was an eternal story of children turning to adults too soon in the face of war. It was also a story of how I grew up in Kentucky when we would tell outsiders, "If I were you, I wouldn't try and follow us into those woods over there intent on mischief. Those are our woods, and we know them better than you know your own bathroom at home."
It's not so far fetched as far as movies go. If you can survive in the wilderness and learn to work as hunters you can fight a guerrilla war. It was even recommended in the book The Prince that if you have no military skills you should take up hunting. Incidentally many native fighters are often hunters to start with.
One of my favorite movies when I was younger. I don't think the director of this cult classic was a right-wing war-monger. Red Dawn is actually a horrors of war action fantasy. In many ways, it's an anti-war movie that depicts the hardships, sacrifices, losses, terrible emotions, battle fatigue, death, destruction, chaos, etc. that inevitably come with every war. If anything, this is a perspective of how citizens of any country would act if their homeland would be invaded. For a long time Americans took, and sadly many still take today, their freedom & hegemony, for granted. Which is a fatal mistake all powerful city-states & empires have made in the past.

some of the vehicles were stopped in LA getting gas and the REAL CIA HAD BEEN FOLLOWING THEM AND WANTED AN explanation of how they were so accurate
It was so realistic that the Government stopped by asking questions.

Harry Dean Stanton was one of the greatest character actors of his generation. Repo Man is a classic.
He played many small roles, but gave a deep impression.
He also did well as the detective in Christine.
This is worth watching every moment! If you lived in this time you would understand why this movie was so Patriotic!

I'm already in my mid 50s and never joined the U.S. military (partly because I was a "crybaby mamas boy" even yesterday, partly because I never wanted to kill anybody that wasn't threatening my existence) but if Red Dawn was to come true in my country I would apply for basic knowing that I'm too old to lead, and too childish to command, but I'm not too old or infeebled to stay in one place waiting for an enemy that might not arrive for more than 3 or 4 days.

I ttly agree that the original is so much better than the remake. I live in the city/area where this picture was filmed and still to this day remember to this day the director and crew creating so many parts/scenes of the movie. Meeting many of the primary cast and crew was a big bonus. Funny how I will remember them much more than they would remember who I was. An experience I will never forget

Whereas most World War 3 films focus on the Armageddon aspect, this one focuses more on the characters, with Armageddon part kept in the background (the Powers Booth character reveals that there was a nuclear war between Russia and China but unlike other apocolyptic type films, the nuclear conflict aspect of the story is never given any more detail beyond Powers Booth's comment).
0:21 seconds you can see a movie mistake, there is a wire connected to the rocket on the launcher to the vehicle they blow up.
This movie is full of mistakes. Charlie's hat blows off because the fan off camera was making the smoke look like it's coming from the rocket propelled grenade. 😁

The film is pure propaganda and a b movie but there's a lot of good acting and memorable scenes that you wouldn't get if it was made today.

Maybe I was just young (although I'm the same age as C Thomas Howell) but I never saw this movie as a political commentary. To me, it was a great character development story. How each character reacted to this situation was fascinating. Some were weak. Some went psycho. Some just died quietly on a swing set and the world never missed them at all except for a name in paint on a rock somewhere. This wasn't a story (at least to me) of how we got there and capitalism vs communism. This was an eternal story of children turning to adults too soon in the face of war.
It was also a story of how I grew up in Kentucky when we would tell outsiders, "If I were you, I wouldn't try and follow us into those woods over there intent on mischief. Those are our woods, and we know them better than you know your own bathroom at home."
IIRC the screenwriter also wrote Jeremiah Johnson.

It's not so far fetched as far as movies go. If you can survive in the wilderness and learn to work as hunters you can fight a guerrilla war. It was even recommended in the book The Prince that if you have no military skills you should take up hunting. Incidentally many native fighters are often hunters to start with.
We might just see this in the near future.

One of my favorite movies when I was younger. I don't think the director of this cult classic was a right-wing war-monger. Red Dawn is actually a horrors of war action fantasy. In many ways, it's an anti-war movie that depicts the hardships, sacrifices, losses, terrible emotions, battle fatigue, death, destruction, chaos, etc. that inevitably come with every war. If anything, this is a perspective of how citizens of any country would act if their homeland would be invaded. For a long time Americans took, and sadly many still take today, their freedom & hegemony, for granted. Which is a fatal mistake all powerful city-states & empires have made in the past.

still better than the remake. All the players were a perfect fit for their roles. This may have been Sheen's first big role, but he still did a small scene in Ferris Buhlers day off, at the end of the movie, with Jennifer Grey. I hated she died in this film.
