Venezuela's Activist Journalists

  • In most democratic countries, a free press plays a critical role in restraining government power and blowing the whistle on abuses of authority.
    In Venezuela, however, members of the media have long been subject to censorship and threats. The Venezuelan government has recently cracked down on independent newspapers and radio networks in an effort to silence any voices critical of the ruling left-wing party.
    In the lead-up to last year's elections, VICE News was on the ground in Venezuela with the activist journalists who are fighting against the censorship of the country's dwindling free press.

    News flash to 2018, Maduro still in power, Venezuelans leaving their country in droves, further instability in the region. Countries such as Cololmbia have closed their borders to Venezuelan refugees because there simply isn't enough space and economic stability to take in the massive amount of Venezuelans fleeing their country. In countries such as Ecuador, Venezuelans have resorted to living in makeshift tents and unsanitary conditions as the Ecuadorian government too is running out of options to help and support refugees.

      Sorry but Chavez did build a strong nation, he rode a wave of massive income and wasted all in short term solutions and corruption, Maduro is just as inept as Chavez was, but with no charisma and appeal, and more important; no money.

    • @lalalolo2611
      @lalalolo2611 Před 6 lety +1

      Rene Alex You mean Chavez "didn't build" is strong nation right? And add to that, any tangible benefits that Venezuela had under Hugo Chavez were based on the very strong barrel of oil of prices that happen just when he was in office and manipulated statistics that his government made without any real input from an independent group. Like many had mentioned before, Chavez wasted that money in short term "solutions" because many of his policies were giving money and goods directly to people rather than have a system that can managed properly and were consumed by corruption within his own government and allies.

    • @ReneAlex
      @ReneAlex Před 6 lety +2

      yeah... that right he did not build s*it, he made his best to segregate and make the Venezuelan society more polarized and antagonist than ever before; for his advantage, exploiting that divide for political gain and keep his party in power. add to all that the mythical populist dream of giving directly to the people is a mirage; all the housing, and vehicles where "social property" (against the law or the land) not private property, to be taken away if the beneficiary changes his political colors, ergo a mere mean of control. So the food and the services, just for loyal supporters, not for all Venezuelans.

    I think context is important. 44% of Venezuela has access to the internet. Which means the opposition parties are really only able to speak to the richest people in Venezuela and this is important because Chavez did not hold power because he was merely a very charismatic character in front of cameras as they erroneously claim in this documentary. He kept power because he spoke directly to everyone in desperate poverty and made real steps to improve their lives. Venezuela is a failure of global politics, just like Zimbabwe and just like Saudi Arabia. The lack of freedom in those countries has to do with their dependence on resources necessary to the advancement of western society and the relative amount of access to the global economy they are permitted based on their attitude towards western economic interests.
    There’s a reason Saudi Arabia (as well as nearly every other major oil producing nation) recovered from low oil prices in 2015 and Venezuela didn’t.

    The Venezualan people may not look oppressed, but there are multiple kinds of oppression. For example in socialist countries like Venezuela they face Both Oppression of their freedoms and economic oppression. The only ways socialism or communism has worked is mixing it with capitalism. Not that long ago Vietnam was collapsing economically, but then they added capitalism and their economy is rising up. Look at China they had a decent economy, but then they added capitalism and boom their economy is great. I am not pro Communist or Socialist. Complete communism or Socialism does not work. One of the main reasons the Soviets kept power longer is cause Gorbachev made the change to Democracy, and sorry if I'm wrong about that. Complete Socialism or Communism does not work and continuing on the subject of Venezuala. Their economy was great until Hugo Chavez took over

    I feel really bad for Venezuela and other South American countries they don’t really have much of a choice. We joke in the us about choosing the lesser evil but down there you have to choose between fascism and socialism. I understand why socialism took such a hold there was rampant inequality and virtual slavery. It could have gotten better but special interest groups a lot of fruit companies from the us supported tyranny, and violence to extract cheap produce. I really don’t know how they can get out of this loop and finally have a real choice

    I don't think anything has Improved in Venezuela since this video was posted. If anything it's gotten worse. These people celebrated for nothing.

    My poor socialism being slandered. If Jesus came to earth, He would implement socialism properly.
