Behind the Protests in Caracas: Venezuela Rising

Earlier this year, VICE News headed to Venezuela's capital of Caracas to cover protests that started in the provinces before engulfing the city. What began as a student movement inspired by the scarcity of basic goods and an exploding crime rate - the UN has classified Venezuela as the world's murder capital, war zones excluded - had snowballed into mass anti-government riots.
Angry at the perceived shortcomings of President Nicolás Maduro, who replaced the charismatic Hugo Chavez a year before, thousands of mostly middle-class protesters took to the streets, tearing the city apart during pitched battles with Caracas's brutal semi-militarized police force. Protesters also had to contend with collectivos, quasi-governmental biker gangs accused of spreading insecurity and discontent to keep Venezuela's population frightened and indoors.
VICE News released six dispatches from the ground and live streamed from Altamira Square, the heart of the city's unrest. In Venezuela Rising, we explain the story behind the protests, linking up with rioters, government supporters, activists, and victims of Caracas's intolerable crime wave. In an exclusive interview, we also speak to Henrique Capriles, the leader of the political opposition.
At least 43 people have died since the protests in Caracas began, and thousands more have been injured and arrested. In Venezuela Rising, VICE News finds out why.

For example, Colombia alone has more water reserves than the entire Europe and Venezuela is highly rich in oil. watching this was very heartbreaking. my mother is Venezuelan and was born and raised in caracas . she went to school there, graduated there, and even met my dad there. although my mother and my family live in the U.S., my mother's family still lives there. I remember looking at old photos of her life and Venezuela and how beautiful and amazing it was, and now the tables have turned. its hard knowing that one day I may never get to see or even talk too my family anymore. Hearing that my cousins (who are under the age of ten) were held hostage in there house multiple times , tears me apart. when my family visits the US every few years, its terrible to see how that something that seems like an everyday product to us, is treasure to them. I wish this would all stop but I know that's not how life works. people need to realize that all this shit is real and no one is really paying attention to it. I understand that Venezuela Is not the only problem our world is facing right now , but to see that no one acknowledges the thousands of people killed, arrested, and tortured sickens me.
We need to support Venezuela! My mom was born in and used to live in Venezuela and she has been near death several times. These people are suffering and its wrong!!!!!!

Yes... But there are people here fighting against a government that has all the control of each channel or mass media in Venezuela. Here you can't know what is happening around our country. Because the regimen has closed or bought all the opposite television channels. Only if you have internet o social media you can try to know the reality of the country, but it's too difficult by the internet controls and in the majority of the case just a little group has access to internet. that's why it so important for us this kind of video. Because, it's the only way to show to the world what is happening in Venezuela now.

HTCEVOSONGS You my friend, are ill-informed. Take it from a Venezuelan. I've lived here. Believe me, most of the people fighting are not "rich little twats." The majority are LOW-CLASS students. And some of them STILL want a socialist country. However they are not fighting for a political system, they are fighting for freedom. Plain and simple. You of all should know that regimes come in all shape and forms. There are capitalist regimes, there are socialists regimes, etc. Venezuela, is a regime. It just happens to also be socialist. I personally have no grudge against that system. However i do have a problem with regimes.
And yes, extreme property went down, but STANDARD poverty went up. WAY UP. It literally costs cheaper to buy a car in Colombia, than to buy a clothes in Venezuela. Do your research.

As far as money... I know where it's not going, and that's to the US... Chavez was one of the few who fought the US's IMF banks. You have to give them credit for making there stake count and finding the independence they needed away from US culture. I dont want the whole world to look like the US. I appreciate the diversity.

Tauri Auri Norway is a country with a social democratic government. They know how to handle things applying socialism to a capitalist system. I've been twice to Scandinavia. The intensions of Venezuela's current government is to gear that direction. The opposition claims they are guided to go the direction of Cuba or North Korea. But if they go Caprile's direction, they will sure see more of Dubai, or Saudi Arabia.
KetchupLocal Thats not accurate. You never saw in Norway the type of ideological diarrhea that keeps gushing out of the PSUV. You did not see this bulllshit about "economic warfare" or class warfare for that matter. You did not see the vehement hatred and rejection of the capitalist system that is the reality of our globalized world. Instead you saw a united recognition of that reality and then an educated application of socio-capitalist policies that protected most of the elements of Norwegian society while preserving a competitive edge in the global market. Yes, Venezuela is far from an Scandinavian model. Even its economy is capitalist, with that all the shifts in prices of their goods are not controlled by the state but the market itself. I know the government intentions are not bad, they have managed to make social reforms, and even with several failures are pulling away the poor from the trends of the long past. The problem Venezuela faces moving left or even right is corruption and lots of it. The people's mindset is way behind to one day become of a more social democratic one. A big problem is Colombia, for their goods get carry across as they are sold again after being bought at a low price when subsidized by the government. It is creating a great loss for Venezuelans who need it the most. Even there is a lot of gasoline taken across. Money laundry has been hiking for several years, and crime represents a great challenge, whose government is not to blame for all of it. It's a cancer in the region. By the way I am very sure the idea of not belonging to any free-trade agreement is to be thankful for. Venezuela has looked to have better trade relationships with the region. And its biggest gas client remains the United States.
If they wanted to make a communist state by this time it would have been done. But instead, there are still socioeconomic classes, and business owners who still own their own goods. Venezuela is not going to become communist any time soon.
My country lived like this 100 years . God save every nation and country from Socialism and Communism.

This is so sad. I've been to Venezuela twice. A month in June 2012 and again for two weeks in January 2013. The amount the country declined just in that time was astounding. I noticed a difference in the people, being more concerned with crime and also a worse economy. I can only imagine how bad it is now. The sad thing is Venezuela has so much potential. Sadly I don't know when I'm going to get to go back.

I love all the people against Bernie Sanders saying "Look at Venezuela, do you really want the U.S. to look like socialist venezuela?" God they are so mis informed. Venezuela isn't the way it is because of socialist policies, it is the way it is because the government was printing money like no tomorrow. In 2013 their inflation rate was 56.6 percent. This means that prices in Venezuela doubled in price ever year and a half. No wonder people in Venezuela are pissed off, the dumb ass president allowed inflation to get out of control. Democratic socialism like that in Scandinavia has reasonable social policies that it pays for with tax dollars from wall street speculation and by closing tax loopholes. They do not over inflate their economy like Venezuela.
Socialism does not equal Inflation, which is why Venezuela is really fucked up.

I'm from Venezuela, but i moved to Orlando last year, I can't believe what Chavez and Maduro have done to Venezuela, it's a really BEAUTIFUL country, but now nobody wants to live there because of the situation. I live here in Orlando with my dad, my mom and my sister, but the rest of my family lives in Venezuela. Hopefully sometime there's going to be a day when everything goes back to normal...

I usually like Vice videos but I felt like this one didn't give enough clear information of what exactly is going on here and of what the two sides are fighting over. I felt confused over who they were referencing during interviews and what each side was trying to accomplish. I wanted to understand a little more about what is happening in Venezuela but I finished this video feeling more confused.

Yes, it seems like everyday that people in South America countries are revolting against their government similarly to the people in Europe, China and South Africa & Asia. I believe those who revolt against their present government can establish new government with a complete understanding that it will function the way they have intended it too. Otherwise, there nation will stay in a state of complete decay for sometime until they reach a compromise between the government and its people. I hope this never happens to any nation especially to the beautiful people of Venezuela.
+itsma name Yes, Chavez helped dark and poor Venezuelans which are majority. He gave them homes, health care, education. The rich elite have never liked this since day 1 even though Venezuela was growing GDP wise and this chaos didn't exist.
All the protests are young rich kids who know nothing about life and all they want is for brown people to not get any government aid.
See the protesters and you won't find many adults. See the Chavez supporters and most are dark skinned.

The protestors are very noisy and I think with this economic boicott they're doing (the rich control the economy, how else would they be rich if they were regular folks? so they're stopping production, making it seem it is really really bad.
