Broken Playstation 3 Controller Restoration & Repair

- I bought this broken Playstation 3 controller to restore it. The controller presses the buttons by itself, additionally the battery is dead and the controller is quite dirty and yellowed.
After I disassembled the controller, I cleaned all the plastics and put the yellowed parts in my retrobrighting box. Retrobrighting is a chemical process that removes the yellowing from the plastic. Here is my tutorial to the process: • How to remove yellowin...

Next it was time to fix the controller. This type of problem often appears when the small piece of foam shiwn in the video gets old and too soft. When that happens it won't apply enough pressure to the pieces that need to make contact. I usually replace them with a new piece of EVA foam. I've also seen people add multiple layers paper or tape under the foam. I also cleaned the electronics with isopropyl alcohol.
Finally I replaced the old dead battery with a new one. Thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed the video!

The satisfaction of seeing something broken brought back to life with just the sounds of the process is exactly what I needed. Excellent work as always.
Pardon me, but are you blind?
I like how you didnt purposely make it dirtier or in worse condition, like a lot of restoration youtubers do.
“BrO lOoK wHaT i fOuNd At ThE pArK”
and u know this how?
I don't know why but I'm ALWAYS anxious to watch Ducktor's teeth brushing session. It is utterly stupid but I love it. And it makes me smile.
Me too I'm like "Come on. Brush his little beak. He needs to do it. Plea- YEAAAHHH!!!"
Wtf
what, anxious? so you’re nervous when it happens?
@@asherose4526Not Necessary to say but okay just watch your behaviour.
Bruh don't write the cuck comment.
The reason you like it is because we all, at the end of the day, crave the unconditional curative love from the endless source of it: God.
I love the ps3. Thanks for fixing up an old console controller which I used to play a lot. I’ve had this issue happen so many times and it’s love that people are actually fixing these controllers instead of throwing them out :)
Mine still works, but I need to open it up to dust it out. Its one of those really difficult models
@@ms.pirate ah, yeah I have a earlier DualShock 3 model where the motors are screwed in. And the rumble motors break off so easily. So I opened it up to replace the little foam pad like he did in the video. And two wires just completely snapped off the board. Luckily I was able to get them soldered back down and I cleaned it all up so now it works fine. It’s now my main controller :)
I broke all of Mines by fixing em :/ lil 10 year old me was a idiot
@@w0lf4llo84oh I meant my console is dusty on the inside. But my ps3 controller also needs cleaning too. It got the stick drift problem
Hard to find a good working ps3 controller nowadays. Do you know any aftermarket one that is almost as good?
I love that your videos are not only incredibly enjoyable, relaxing and even educational, but they're also allowing you to build up a nice collection of things that you can enjoy and use.
Always love watching you fix controllers to give them a second chance to be used. Keep working hard
i have been following you for quite a while now and i must say that i typically find restoration videos to be quite messy and boring but your content is so easy to follow because it is well paced and well organized, i especially love when you restore gaming consoles and their controllers, tysm for your hard work! keep it up!
This man is so good, he can even restore my faith in humanity. 😂
Restoration of white devices just hits different.
I have never commented on any of your videos, I thought I could leave a comment now since I find your videos very relaxing and extremely entertaining, very calming and soothing as well. Great job on the restoration of that controller.
Same
I'm a PlayStation 3 user and I'm glad you still make some contents about this old console; thank you!
The white/pearl colour you get from retrobrighting is amazing. Well done! always great to see controllers being fixed, as theyre the most common and easiest to repair. Usually.
Love you covered the PS3 controller but wish more attention was brought to the CECHZC2U A2 or ps3 gen 2 controller as the internals are different and dismounting it even more so.
Not to complain but the vids for the A1 are everywhere, guides for disassembly for the controller are exclusive to A1 as well, even Ifixit
Yes, I discovered the random presses issue by chance when one of my controllers went crazy.
I replaced the foam with the modern foam that comes in the package of modern electronics with is more dense and sturdy and filled the gaps on the plastic placement in the case to prevent it to deform in the future.
Finally, the return of ASMR that I fully enjoy at midnight
I so greatly admire this kind of work. It's really inspired me to try my hand at this sort of repair, and so far I've managed to fix a couple controllers from the N64 i've had since childhood! I have a lot of fond memories associated with that console, so it felt good to be able to preserve the parts that mean something to me. Thanks so much for all you do :)
These videos are so satisfying 😂 I actually learned a couple techniques and tricks from watching these and applied them to my life like the Qtip with rubbing alcohol for cleaning
Love how you can still see the markings on the foam from the Atari 2600 repair.
I never get tired of your videos, I always enjoy them a lot! :)
Hey OddTinkering! I lover your videos! You inspired me so much that I bought the screw driver set and repaired my ps4 slim. Thank you so much and keep up the good work!
Love seeing this old retro console get some love.
Stop you're making me feel old!!! 😭
Bro called PS3 retro
I love to watch your videos. Those aren't restoration videos based on one and the same scheme of accidentally finding something, cleaning with water and changing 99% of parts. Your videos are true ones, and satisfying at one time.
When I take stuff like this apart it never goes back the same lol great work as always
3:47 Wow,even the inside of the controller got yellow. It looks nice and clean now!
Your videos are very interesting, I like the videos of fixing white and beige products the most as the retrobright process is my favourite part
You're so careful and delicate in your movements it baffles me. I would love to not lose my patience while doing that as you do. Dualshocks can be pretty tricky.
Dude! The PlayStation Home! That brings me back.. Nice video as always OT!
5:52 is what we came to see! Love the de-yellowing part!
I love watching you bring electronics back to life, I hate seeing consoles die.
I know a lil bit too much about fixing these. Think a lot of us 40 year olds do. 😁
Great video as always. 👍👍
this model with the foil-contacts is probably my least favourite.
I have a ps3 controller that doesn’t power on. Even tried a battery from another working controller, but still receives no power. Any idea what it could be?
As soon as you started removing the motor, I was just thinking, "NO DON'T DO IT! IT'S A TRAP!!!" And while the foam does degrade, I also use a fine metal polish to gently bring back the shininess on the contacts on the ribbon cable, then clean both it, and the carbon pads on the board with iso. Might start adding new foam now though.
What thickness of foam ??
Also what type of metal polish do you use?
@@DaSaint161 Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, it's VERY gentle, because obviously, it's for polishing aluminum and magnesium wheelse, and really any foam will work, but I'm pretty sure mine is 1/8th, adhesive sheets and I just cut out what I need for various projects.
He is the best CZcams fix-it guy you can ever watch. I really enjoy this guy's stuff without needless talk or other miscellaneous garbage. He’s just good. When I go to retro shops all over Japan Tokyo. I see a lot of these old retro game councils and when you see something that looks too mint condition it’s because they use the retro brightening system to restore to the plastic's original condition as new.
Thanks for doing this. It's great to see how cleaning and repairing and restoring classic things.
Interesting, I never knew that you can attach the L2/R2 triggers to the main parts, I've always had them on the back part when reassembling a DS3 and that's been annoying to put back together.
Good job as always!
there are so many different variants of the Dualshock 3, with vastly different internal designs.
@@theFrizzleFry Ah, good point there. I have one which came with an OG 80GB and one which came with a slim 160GB. Haven't even thought that they may have different internals when I've cleaned those.
I love to watch these keep up the good work man😀👍

Thanks bro, i just fixed my ps3 controller where the circle button was not working. You just made it seem simple.. although ,the parts are very wobbly and delicate.. .. thanks to you again.. my ds3 got some life back
Really enjoy your videos. Working in a bicycle shop I'd like to see what you could do for an old bike thats been neglected for years. Maybe a little swamp rot too. Could be an interesting video project.
Since discovering your content, I have been pretty much glued to the screen.. i´ve tinkered around some with electronics & soldering before, but seeing the results you´re getting when cleaning & servicing these gaming consoles really inspired me... I´ve modified consoles myself every now and then but now I am eager to take on the real challenges, basically blowing new life into those pieces so many would just have given up on... will scout my local charity shops for cheap and free dusty old gear and get to it this christmas...it just looks so goddamn satisfying what you accomplish time after time..
Can we admire this man's attention to detail! It's spot on!🎉
Same issue 1 year ago with my Dualshock 2. When I ripped off the polyurethane foam out of the controller it was quite destroyed, so I made a new piece... with pink sponge. Works the same, but it wasn't so elegant, since the controller is transparent, but if it works it works for me.
an upload from you always makes my day. big love! x
Your videos are seriously next level, keep it up!
It's not ok how much joy I get out of watching these. Lemme know if you ever want to do another Game Boy Advance. Found my old one that means a lot to me, if you were thinking mods or anything you wanted to try ;)
One thing I want to see is how the retrobrite holds up because a lot of people have said that its only a temporary fix. Maybe show off a white product you restored a year or two ago to see if your method is a permanent fix
I think it's inevitable, the console will get in contact with uv again and will get yellow
This guy proved the fact that every device and item is repairable
Missed you! Thanks for sharing this❤❤❤❤ hope to see you soon!
Once again excellent restoration video, Odd! :D I especially loved that scene where you've shown that you have an official "Battery Graveyard", and then said "Rest In Peace" afterwards of throwing in the old PlayStation 3 DualShock Controller battery! XD Of course we can't forget the amazing Ducktor, and his equally amazing restoring powers! I also like that you were testing out the controller on a PC! I'm gonna have to try that out one day! Keep up the amazing work! ❤
I had the same problem with random pressing buttons. I had no idea it could be because of the piece of foam. I tried it out and it worked. Nice. Thank you very much.
very cool. i always love to watch you clean tech and the thumbnails are great too. keep up the work.
Oh, you're so cool with opening the driver box. lol Loved it! Actually, loved the entire video. 👍👍👍
Very cool. I can’t get enough of these.
I love that you always make a point of brushing Ducktor's "teeth" lol, it wouldn't be Odd Tinkering without him now 😁
This project was "piece of cake" for you. 👏👏👏
I've called you out many times before for faking "patina" but this one seems pretty legit. THANK YOU.
I love your videos and can’t wait for your uploads. Thank you
Another great, relaxing video! Thanks
Great restoration. Like always! :D
Thank you, it was cool af!
I think ur so busy, but pls make more content man❤
The legend is back 🔥
I've never taken apart a controller before but I didn't want to buy another one. The left thumbstick was acting haywire and causing the right stick to move when it wasn't supposed to. The buttons weren't responsive as they should be. This totally helped me now it's working perfectly.
forgot how much these were a pain to fix, and this wasn't even including the weird split piece between the bumpers and triggers on the older revisions of these controllers. a true godsend to add into the bottom half mould! it was the single worst thing to keep in place trying to assemble!
This is pretty satisfying!
Awesome work, love to see the Ducktor!
Odd tinkering is a true legend ❤
😮💨 Good old Times with the Ps3 ❤ Thanks for the Video ❤
RETURN OF THE KING
You make it look so simple.
Best reparation videos that existis! Thank you
Like the day it came out.
Great job as always, keep it up.
Thanks so much! I have 4 remotes that need fixing! Thanks for the plugs on the parts as well! 😅
your torx set is so beautiful, i only got a nice cheap one
Hello Odd beautifully fixed well done
As always, Ducktor made an excellent job
Fascinating work 👏!
You did a nice job!❤❤❤
I remember talking apart my controller to clean it. It used to have separate plastic pieces between bumpers and triggers. It was a nightmare to place them back correctly. The newer versions had those integrated in the top of the pad cover. No wonder why they made this change 😅
good seeing it match the console
Excellent restorations.
I recently killed my Dualshock4 but was able to actually fix it thanks to you
Finally!!! I've been waiting for this...
Yep, it's working perfectly you bring a dead controller to life good job!
This is amazing I didn’t try it yet but it looks easy and I will try it
thats so useful man, thank you. Ive been torturing my ps3 gamepads for a while trying to solve phantom presses. I will try foam replacement now
much thanks!!
This video alone taught me more than an entire STEM class ever could
My controllers had water damage I cannot tell you how many times I opened those things trying to fix them I think I was only successful with one. This video really takes me back.
Watched this video and I was able to fix my controller off of your guide thank you so much for showing us how to fix a glitchy controller
I love your videos, but PLEASE more often!!!
i am eating my lunch and watching this. this is oddly satisfying ^^
Another thing you can do with the contact pad (if you don't have any of the materials) is cover it with a small layer of tissue paper snd wrap it in electric tape.
Doing so will make it thicker and more durable and it won't crease or get thin over time.
I did that on all my V1 dualshock controllers and I haven't had any issues since then.
Oh my gosh, yes! Yes, I do! I mean, I will subscribe to you! You've made me the happiest viewer!
This video could not have been timed better for me. I fell off my skateboard with beer and ps3 controllers in my backpack resulting in sticky buttons ever since. Now, years later i am using one of those controllers on my computer and was wondering if i could clean it just two days ago. Thanks!
The Ducktor always brings a smile to my face. :)
Dunno why I like this channel so much. Couldn’t have clicked faster on seeing the thumbnail
Very relevant video. I`ve got my ds3 back after years and of course it's battery is dead and have to be replaced
That's the good stuff right there. Odd tinkering and filthy broken consoles and peripherals.
5:40 idk why i love when you do that!! The ducky is so cute xD
I love this, you just saved me some serious dough!
The yellowing wasn't too bad. I think it's supposed to be an off-white color. Weird too how the inside of the shells were more yellow than the outside.
Great content as usual, I love your style and the setup 🤩
Just a question and sorry if it has already been asked: do you recycle the peroxide for different retrobrighting sessions?
