  • This video will show you how to replace your Drivers front Door Lock Actuator on a MK4 Jetta. We will also discuss the alarm problems that also may be a result of the door lock actuator failing. This will include symptoms and a quick and easy way to check if the microswitch in your door latch is acting up.

    Thank you so much for this video. I could no longer open the door of my 2004 Passat from the inside. I ordered a new cable, and your instructions enabled me to get the whole job done well. It is all in working order and I saved a few hundred bucks. Thanks especially for the closeups of attaching things to the new locking mechanism. I did not replace mine, but I had to attach the new wire and the lock indicator came loose and had to reattach it.

    Be really careful with T-25 and T-27 torx.
    The bit should fit really tight in the fastener.
    It's very easy to use a T-25 bit in a T-27 fastener and round it out as you apply torque.
    I always keep the T-27 nearby when I'm dealing with T-25 fasteners, and see if it wants to fit, because it's easy to get fooled.

    Thank you for the video. Your instructions were spot on. I had a more difficult time removing the lock cylinder than you for some reason. I think I was afraid to loosen the screw too much. I had to back it off quite a few turns before the cylinder pulled out. I watch from the inside to make the the screw wasn't about to pull out of the hole. I also had a little trouble with the electrical connector. Other than those two items it was pretty easy.

    • @nbpt1000
      @nbpt1000 Před 2 lety

      i did exactly the same thing for the same reasons. I looked on the inside with a flash light to make sure I was not going to loose the screw. You actually have to loosen it quite a bit before the cylinder will move.

    Great Video! Your video is the very best I've found. I could not have disassembled and reassembled the door panel to gain access to the lock actuator without this video; Thanks! I have an issue with my 2005 Jetta TDI MK4; my two front doors are not electrically locking and unlocking; inside buttons on either door do not work nor does the keyfob (only front door locks are affected - the rear door locks function OK with keyfob and drivers door unlock button). I have to use the actual key to unlock and lock the drivers door - which will turn on and off the alarm system OK. And the pqssenger door, I have to use the inside ‘handle’ to unlock and open the door and then to lock it have to push the small knob near the window down. I haven't had any of the 'random' symptoms that some talk about. When I open each door, the bottom light comes on, as it should. Again, the only way to unlock the front doors is to use the key inserted into the lock in the driver's door and rotate it so the door will unlock (also only way to lock the driver's door is using the mechanical key and rotating it). Once the driver's door is unlocked, to unlock the passenger door one has to reach across the seats and pull on the inside handle. I did rip apart the passenger door and was able to get across contacts #1 & 2 (of the door lock assembly) with 12vdc and verified the lock motor did work, and in both directions. I was going to replace the door lock assemblies, but not sure that’s the problem. Another piece of info. is that both front door lock issues did not happen at the same time. One door lock stopped working a few months before the other then stopped. It may even be an issue with the central control module, as it appears the voltage comes from that to the motor.?.? I’m just not sure what is in that module in terms of ‘logic’ for the front door locks. I would greatly appreciate any advice or additional troubleshooting tips to isolate this issue. Thanks.

    My door lock will not always turn on the alarm or turn it off either. What's annoying is when it does not turn off the alarm before I try to get in. If I can't get it to disarm, it sets off the alarm. Since mine is an old MK4, and I don't want to spend the money or time on it, is there a simple way to just disconnect the alarm?

      Exactly correct. The door lock module and window bracket can be removed all at once once you unbolt the door lock module from the door. And the trick to removing the lock cylinder is to turn the side screw 12 turns left exactly and it will free up the lock cylinder without losing the screw.

If I use the key fob the alarm will set, However the drivers side door will not lock. If I physically put the key in and lock it that way the alarm will set and the door is locked! So I am assuming that this door lock module is bad.

      Most issue revolve around the car not knowing that the door is open or closed. So for example: If you want the car to lock but the car thinks that one of the doors are open due to a faulty actuator, it will not lock...

    My 2000 Jetta will immediately auto lock all the doors and arm the alarm whenever the driver's side door is closed. Also the driver side door no longer unlocks with the key cylinder or click button and makes a buzzing noise when I click the button to unlock. The key gets stuck in the lock cylinder so I no longer can use the key. Would replacing the lock actuator fix the click button issue? Once replaced should this still work with the click button on my original key? Please advise.

      Replacing the lock module won't affect your key, or the remote buttons -- you won't have to reprogram it for a lock module swap. The weird auto-locking behaviour IS likely caused by your driver's side lock module -- swapping for a good module should solve most issues* . * Unless one of the other lock modules is also faulty, that will often show up as your lock plunger staying down/staying up when you use your power locks to do the opposite.

    have an issue and maybe you know how to solve it, it is a 2001 mk4 TDI driver side door that would unlock using a fob but won't lock using a fob. it would lock using a fob, only if I unlock it and lock it within a second, same situation happens inside the car, with 2 buttons near the inside door handle. any ideas, or suggestions?

    If I replace the door latch, does the new latch come with new micro switches? I've read that the micro switches can go bad causing this same issue. Or if my latch is good can I just replace the micro switches? Thanks
