  • Every year we plant a winter crop (wheat or triticale) for stocker cattle to graze. We plant using no-till and we graze the cattle rotationally. We are seeing positive results from implementing no-till regenerative farming practices the last 5 years and grazing cattle. Go back and look at earlier videos about our journey on regenerating a Texas wheat farm.
It is that time of year to prepare our medicinal tonics so I will share with you my recipe for elderberry syrup that I have used since my children were young.
I finished the Sourdough Chocolate Cake to celebrate birthdays.
Hope you enjoy a peak into our busy farmstead life!
    Best,
    Caren

As homesteaders our soil health is the most important part of gardening. We are growing soil not plants. Watch this video to see how using no-till practices will regenerative your soil. Our wheat farm has transformed in 5 years from bare soil to diverse native grasses. It is the time of year to prepare our tonics and I will show you my recipe for elderberry syrup. Blessings, Caren

Wonderful you inherited two farms. We have some earlier videos of the farm from 2020 that might help. Glad you are considering no-till, it is really helping our farm.

are you continuing to overseed with covers to help the native grasses? Even after 2023 brutal summer, my central texas pasture looks decent.

We have not planted a cover crop in the last few year because we have not had much success with a spring or summer cover crop. The no-till wheat/triticale crop has really helped. If you compare the earlier videos with this video you can see the native grasses are recovering. We have been custom grazing even in the summer the last two years despite drought. We have almost doubled our income by implementing no-till and improving our grasses so that is a win. Just slow. Glad your pastures are improving. Do you use no-till?

I've been mowing then doing a light harrow (1-2") only one pass then a regular seed drill. No grazing or haying yet. Plan from here is to drag the drill behind the disc, as they are the same spacing. Almost no till. Glad we're getting some moisture. I imagine the wheat/triticale can reseed.@@texasfarmsteadliving-caren9517
