  • Jean Shepherd spent his entire childhood and High School years in Hammond, Indiana, where he went on to write and talk about his hometown and the people he grew up with in his articles in Playboy and his Radio Shows on WOR New York for 21 years during the 50', 60's & 70s. Jean or "Shep" as he ws often called, is mostly known as the writer of the popular movie "A Christmas Story" which evolved from his book "In God We Trust and All Others Pay Cash. The City of Hammond, Indiana along with the Downtown Hammond Historic Preservation Commission, The Downtown Hammond Council and The South Shore Tourism and Convention Bureau asked if I could produce a Tribute Video to our hometown native son, Jean Shepherd. This is a shorter version from the original. I will following this up with a Documentary/Film on Jean Shepherd's Life and Career. I want to Thank everyone that helped me produce this Tribute to Jean Shepherd. Nick Mantis of New Millennium Productions. Stay tuned for much much more! Excelsior You Fathead!"

I have never been to NYC, but I feel like it know it pretty well by listening to the many radio broadcasts Shep did at the Limelight in Greenwich Village before a live audience.

I grew up in Greenwich Village in the 60s, 70s and 80s. I even came back as a cop there in the 90s after moving to Brooklyn. Me and my dad listened to him every night. Finding these shows are a gem, and i appreciate them in a different way. Yes, it's like being in nyc again. I hope you get a chance to see New York. You'll be fine. Just don't make yourself a mark by burying your head in your phone, and, as my dad told me every time i went out, "Look shifty."

I've read descriptions of fictional planets that came off less abstruse and alien than Shep's descriptions of the wilds of New Jersey
