- The VA's combined ratings table can be confusing. How does the VA compute combined ratings? This is what so many veterans call "VA math".

Learn more about the combined ratings table here: www.woodslawyers.com/how-to-d...
Veterans may develop multiple disabilities as a result of their military service. Each health condition receives its own rating. Then, those ratings are combined to determine their overall monthly VA disability compensation. However, 80% + 20% doesn't equal 100% in VA math. It's 84%, which gets rounded down to 80%.
The bilateral factor and other extraschedular ratings also affect your combined rating and monthly compensation amounts.
You can calculate your combined rating using our VA disability rating calculator: www.woodslawyers.com/va-disab...

VA : HOLD MY BEER
When you're sworn in the military, you're dedicating everything up to your life, like giving someone a signed blank check, when honorably discharged, vets should automatically be taken care of for life, if the vet has wife, and/or children, if the vet is kia, they should be taken care of for life, the children at least until they reach the age of 18, if the children decide to go to school the gov should pay for it, fight for your country, then have to fight the same gov you fought for, to receive benefits
As a fully disabled combat veteran myself who due to only recently being “awarded” TDIU P&T I am still at risk of losing my home to foreclosure among many other financial hardships I face. Everyone thinks getting that check once a month it should be able to pay for EVERYTHING AND THAN SOME but the truth is, IT DOESN’T!! Especially when you realize I was unemployed for 2 entire years before finally being “awarded” full disability. I’m not saying I deserve everything just handed to me on a silver platter but I do believe the country/government NEEDS to do a better job of taking care of their troops BOTH CURRENT AND FORMER MEMBERS!!!
@@ProudBostonian that’s all I’m saying right there couldn’t say it any better
They are too busy giving money to welfare and immigration, or more accurately socialists and invaders, to care about those of us that give the best part of our lives. If not all of it. Now that I can barely get to sleep, and if I run, I can't walk for a day, and they are leaving me just above the level of poverty. I am beginning to fully understand the phrase below.

@@urdude67 lol all good brother thanks for asking
Thank you for the explanation, that being said this “VA math” is designed for NO OTHER purpose then as a means to deny veterans compensation. I’m glad that I was fortunate to have been granted 100% TDIU P&T last month as I am just under 35 years old. I’m not sure how rare it is or if it’s common for people in my age bracket to receive TDIU P&T or not but given my situation I’m certainly glad the VA agreed with me!
VA granted my TDIU. I am 21
@@RowneyPowers Not sure how you pulled that off but congrats
@@ProudBostonian A lumbar strain, 2 herniated discs and a fucked up mental health from it. Haven't worked since I was discharged from the military. Got TDIU approved in one day when I applied
@@RowneyPowers Oh you went the mental health route, that explains it. I had 6 bulging discs 2 herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease and degenerative facet disease and it still took two attempts and being let go from 3 separate jobs and being unemployed for a complete calendar year since I didn’t file a mental health claim because being deployed didn’t affect me and I was going to say it did if it didn’t. I had a buddy who claimed PTSD from being deployed as a security forces troop which is laughable and complete bullshit but hey I guess if you can pull one over on the system good on him as long as he doesn’t get caught.
@@ProudBostonian Holy shit brother.. My back kills me everyday, I can only imagine what you must feel like..
My back injury has caused me to be fucked mentally. Panic attacks, depression, etc. I filed an increase on my back and migraines secondary to mental health and back pain.
I am trying to get to 100% scheduler p&t.
This was a very well done explanation of the combined rating table. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Excellent presentation. I have multiple disabilities, and recently did an example lowest to highest and highest to lowest. High to low gives the best result, so I’m glad to hear that that is the mandated order of operations.
Glad to hear you liked it!
Strongly recommend woods and woods . Took me from 20 percent to 100 percent . It took time but they came through . 👍🏽
how much were you charged for their law services wico flores?
They wouldn’t even talk to me. Once I told her that I was currently employed, she referred me to a partner
The VA purposefully makes it harder to get higher pay. "Denied, Denied,Denied until they die!!!"
Been fighting them for 30 years I’ll end up dying before I see any help from them
@@jayfoster8120 What's your rating
I’m currently 0% service connected they have denied everything else for the past thirty years of fighting with them. I had neck knee head stomach injuries from a car accident in 1980. I can’t even get service connected for my front tooth that got knocked out and stuck in my lip. I have severe sleep apnea depression a surgical hernia caused by by sloppy surgery at a va hospital from a bowel adhesion from the car accident that ended up with two more surgeries to put 8 inch square mesh in to hold my stomach together. I have to wear a binder to keep pressure off the mesh or the pain is too much. I was exposed to ionizing radiation while an electronic tech for the coast guard I have early on set cataracts which is a sign of radiation exposure. A lot of the guys I worked with are dead or have had children with birth defects. There’s more I just can’t write any more because it will just make my depression worse.
@@jayfoster8120 I am so sorry to hear that. Do you have any of these symptoms or exposures in your military treatment service records? Have you ever considered getting a nexus letter from a doctor stating your conditions and disabilities is due to your military service? I want to try to help you as much as I can.
@@RowneyPowers I don't know how to explain a nexus letter to a doctor never had anyone else that could do it either. Any of the help groups I have delt with have been of little help with this either. I always get just have your doctor write a letter. Any VA doctor I have asked about this are clueless as to what I'm talking about or playing dumb.

hello good morning sir, please I'm still a little confused about how VA came to a ratings of 80% for my disability.

Just a big fuck you method. I was 210% disability rating on the way out. Had my evaluation 2 years later. And now I have a “combined rating” of 80% lost thousands of dollars a month and had to move to shit part of town and well you know the rest. Life got worse and worse.
what i am trying to find out is i have 60%raring can it be cut
Good question! There are a few reasons the VA may reduce a veteran's rating. However, some ratings are considered protected. Here's some additional information about that: www.woodslawyers.com/can-va-reduce-veterans-disability-benefits-rating/?.com&CommentShare
Here is exactly my situation..I am totaling 70% and 30% for depression being the highest..10% for keft knee and 10 % for right knee and 10% for my lumber spine/chronic back pain and 30% for bilateral flat feet..so I put in for increase benefit because all my conditions got worst and I have not worked for almost 2 years now because of my service connected disabilities..but unfortunately my depression got reduced from 50% to 30% making me not qualify for scheduler rating for tdiu...and bilateral flat feet from 10% to 30% two months ago..how can I get to permanent and total .. I already have a pending tdiu claim which I put in after the denial for increase..can you guys please help me appeal that inaccurate reduction and get me the benefits I deserve..I am going through alot right now with no support . . I have been suicidal and still suicidal..this pain is too much so denying me the benefits I deserve is just adding insult to injury. Please help.
For every 10% it’s about 3 points added (after you highest rating). For example if you are 40% PTSD and then 30% back, and then 10% tinnitus that would be 40% plus12 points=52 points or 5O%
In this scenario in order to reach 60% the veteran would need three more points (or 10 more percent.) to reach 65 points for 70%

Is there a special circumstance that VA would round a combined 83% up to a 90%? And if not, will they require you to pay money back if they do a review and realize they made an error?
nope
Great presentation but.
It is still confusing
Thanks 🤔
We sympathize. VA math is notoriously complicated!
So in this example, a third disability at say 10% would come out of the 28% remaining efficiency bringing the total efficiency rating down to 25.2%, which would mean the new disability rating is 74.8%, but still 70% because of the rounding down rule? And so on for a 4th, or 5th disability?
VA math is tricky. Our blog post does a great job explaining how to calculate combined ratings: www.woodslawyers.com/how-to-do-va-math-with-the-va-combined-ratings-table/?.com&CommentShare#h-how-do-you-calculate-your-combined-ratings-yourself
I have the following combined ratings of 50%, 20%, 20% and 10%. When I do the VA math, I get 74.8. Does that round up to 75 and therefore goes to 80% or is it at 70%?
We have a VA disability calculator on our website that you can use for free to calculate your rating. Here is the link www.woodslawyers.com/va-disability-benefits-rating-calculator-for-veterans/
It’s 70% you have to hit 75 to get 80
If you have torn meniscus, torn ACL,osteoarthritis, poor range of motion in both knees will they right me for all those
If all of those conditions are service-connected, then generally yes, you should receive a rating for all of them, except perhaps the poor range of motion. The VA could call that a symptom of your other conditions and not a condition on its own. Here's some more information on knee ratings: www.woodslawyers.com/va-disability-for-knee-pain-and-knee-injuries/
I have a friend who has no disability and is at 100 percent because he works for VA and knows someone in VA who makes rating decisions.
If that's true then it shows VA corruption, but then your friend is also corrupt for accepting this and you should probably report this and get different friends.
@@Remy4489 You are absolutely right. We are no longer friends.
My highest is 40% and I have 8 more at 10% and I still can’t figure out how they got my combined rate

Had a 70% combined rating just got a 40%rating for my back what would be my rating now
That depends. What are the individual ratings for the conditions that you have a combined rating for? To get an accurate combined rating, the disabilities will first have to be arranged in the exact order of their severity, beginning with the greatest disability.
It's not 100 % I guarantee that. I know because I'm in the same boat . All my disabilities add up to 110% but I'm stuck at 70%
Go figure
Right now I'm at 60% disability, but get paid at 50%. Which of these ratings should I use when doing the calculation?
Is one of those ratings for a VA pension?
@@woodslawyers No, it's a disability rating. I guess it's actually a 50% disability rating. I previously thought it was a 60% rating and I'm getting paid for 50%. There are two questions I have: 1.) If I'm at 50% now and I get the new hypertension benefit at 60% (blood pressure over 135), does that move me to 70% disability rating? The second question is more of the legal variety. A few years ago I had a stroke. My neurosurgeon told me that diabetes (I have type 2) is the primary cause of stroke. I applied for an additional compensation fro the stroke because the VA already compensates me for diabetes. My claim was rejected. Now, diabetes and hypertension are covered under the Agent Orange disability umbrella; so it seems to me that stroke should qualify for disability also. I did recover fully from the stroke after about a year. And, yes I realize you can't work for free.
We have a VA disability calculator on our website that you can use for free to calculate your combined rating. Here is the link: www.woodslawyers.com/va-disability-benefits-rating-calculator-for-veterans/. You may be able to receive secondary VA disability benefits for your stroke as long as you can prove the stroke happened due to your diabetes. From my experiences with the VA, this rating they use only favors the VA and not the veteran. I have had the pleasure of experiencing this. I have questioned it many times and it was explained to me many times and I am still confused and I still do not accept it. It is not a fair system.
Where did you get 28 percent ?
From the original 40% efficiency, 30% of that is 12%. Leaving 28% efficiency.
Will they rate me for all those
If I could understand the IRS then I could understand the VA. Both the same to me very confusing.

I seen a video on the requirements for a VA pension for non-sereve disability I am 65 I am on social security disability I was approved for social security disability in 1989 I severe at least 90 days of active duty doing war time and I am under the income limit my ex-wife threw all my paperwork out in the garbage when we separated up in 1993 I am getting my military records back but can't remember what doctors I seen back in 1989 I had two neck surgery so I have two problems my back injury and my neck l live in the Philippines I try to get a copy of my social security disability award letter but the social security office in the U.S embassy told me they couldn't retrieve the letter if I had the social security administration send me a letter that be brief that I was approved for social security disability and the reason and the date would VA accept that and what are my chances of getting approved for a VA pension without my medical records thank you
im no lawyer but its my understanding that the ssdi and va are 2 separate entities and would have very different records. the ssa wouldnt have in their records military service. you should have done this back when you discharged. i just dont get why veterans try to fight the va years after the fact. were you medically retired? its my understanding that if you didnt discharge for your disability but fufilled your terms of contracts then your disability did not inhibit your duty of military service. it is possible that you could have finished a contract with the disability but was placed on a limited duty status while on active duty. i see this situation a lot with veterans. divorced spouses discarding copies of records the vet has in their possession. if you do get the rating how do you plan on keeping that rating? because the va does reevaluations for ratings.unless you are permanent and total. its not forever. i have schizophrenia and i see my psychiatrist at the va on a regular basis. if when the va does a reeval on me they can access my va medical records to see i am still being treated for said ailment. your records from the military wont be enough. you will need current records to prove the issue still exists and you still get treatment for it.

Tony, your idea is correct, the problem is your math. 30% of 40 IS 12, so the 12% is SUBTRACTED from the 40% of remaining efficiency, leaving you 28% total efficiency. The calculations aren't done on disability, they're done on remaining efficiency.
Agreed...He made it unneccessarily confusing. Much more confusing than it had to be. If he had only done the math in a visual while explaining it would have been better.

That breakdown of the reverse percentage threw me off.

Question: who approves and writes the Code of Federal Regulations ? This standard and “math” is not determined by the VA, the doctors or examiners….rather, ISN’T the CFR is a legislative branch law approved by the POTUS. If so 🤔 - the “math” here seems to be mandated by the Federal government (legislative and executive) not the VA who is complying with the regulatory guidance. Please advise?
Good question! Veterans law is administrative law, which is law that is made by the executive branch through a rulemaking process. The VA is part of the executive branch, and is in charge of rulemaking for that agency. However, the public can participate in the rulemaking process. Also, the legislative branch (Congress) can, at times, attempt to compel the VA to make certain changes by passing legislation. However, that legislation ultimately needs to be approved by the executive branch (POTUS). Checks and balances! It's worth noting that some people believe administrative law is an overstep of the executive branch, because there are not many checks on the rulemaking process by other branches of government.
Multiples of ten, not powers of ten.
" VA Math " : if 0 is the identity for addition and 2 =1 , 70% + 40% + 30% = 90% QED ...
Whoever came up with this combined rating BS, I hope they were well compensated because at least someone got their just compensation from this fake math.
We agree it can be confusing!
I'm 100%on the money side yet they won't let me get above the 60% on the other side.I can't get above the 60% for the life of me!!! I served in the Army and the UNITED STATES MARINE CORE!!! THEY ACT LIKE THEY DON’T WANT TO HELP ME!!! SHAMEFUL!!!
I served both too. You don't seem like you have. Perhaps plan. Review.
WTF ????
I know, right?
Bottom line is the VA system is rigged. I know an Airman honorably discharged, always getting into trouble when he was in, constantly whined and complained about his job, and he was awarded 100% P and T. Yet a friend of mine that was an Iraq war veteran and Marine awarded 70% with PTSD and barely making ends meet.
As for 100%, if you’re using the system honestly and are really a war vet with physical and mental issues, getting higher than 90% will take a lot. Just look at VA math and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
