      I want to know why he is banned from the brand actually? He hasn't had access to any new McLarens from McLaren for awhile now, even with the Senna crash he dealt with the one place, not McLaren ever. He wasn't invited to any events with the GT or the 765LT so clearly something happened with him and them. My personal suspicion, he tried to shake them down for money to promote the brand and they got pissed.

    • @liberi567
      @liberi567 Před 4 lety +25

      Just want to hop in on this discussion. Shmee's ownership experience hasn't been always great. Recently he showed in one of his videos he had rust on the paint of his 675LT, and he told he had to go back to get it fixed several times. He might be biased, but he does not lie about the issues his McLarens have had.

    • @Michael-zx5ux
      @Michael-zx5ux Před 4 lety +10

      @@liberi567 Indeed, just because he had a bunch of McLarens in the last 10 years doesn't mean he's "biased", but I guess kids don't even know what that means. Unlike Sam here, who remained silent for all this time concerning the issues with his 540C for his own sake and interest, Tim never hid anything about the issues he had during his ownership, nor does he need to. The overheating with the 675LT Spider down in France, the paint issues you mentioned along with others were addressed or even commented by him in videos. As for those who commented above: Tim was doing the USA road trip when the 765LT launched. He was there in Woking at the private launch "party" for the 720S Spider and also the press reviews for it and the 600LT Spider. Tony should have remained silent in the end of this video instead of insinuating low key that there could be any compromise or bias from Tim's part, a bit of an hypocritical behavior from his part.

    When Ron Dennis was basically forced to leave McLaren, I predicted that this will be the beginning of the end of McLaren. He certainly is a controversial figure and his perfectionism and rather unforgiving/ ruthless approach used to be quite famous in F1, yet he was both respected and feared for that - also as a businessman outside F1 btw. When it comes to their cars, he shaped the approach McLaren had when it came to their take on cars (techy, big on aero etc) and his philosophy led their school of thought. Brands such as McLaren need this type of guy. I just checked the chronology of events when McLaren s problems started to arise - it coincides with the time when they had the row with Ron Dennis- and ever since he was forced out, things started to go downwards by the same pace they changed their business philo (frequency of new models, quick buck over long lasting growth, less innovation and the problems piling up). It s noteworthy that ever since Ron Dennis started losing his influence and then was ousted, it was the time McLaren lost its way and issues came up at all fronts.

      I disagree because the majority of Mclaren’s current issues revolve around it’s awful dealer network and the service they provide to their customers. In the US dealer principals are literally walking away from franchises because it’s impossible to make money as a Mclaren dealership and although it’s something that has snowballed out of control it’s also something that I feel is out of Ron’s expertise and had he still been at the helm I don’t think he’d have done anything differently to resolve it ....I think he’d rather count tiles in the lobby to make sure there were an even number than to work on getting someone with real knowledge as far as how high end brands and dealership network properly work

Yes some small issues and minor "quirks" (which you learn to deal with quite easily), overall so far more reliable than the two Porsche's (997 GT3 and Turbo) I owned previously for the same period and milage. I must be one of the 3 out of 10 who have been lucky enough not to have any serious problems. In 8 years and 30000 miles I've had a windscreen wiper motor fail and a sensor disconnect from the gearbox. I've used the car on track and as a GT with 4 major driving holidays through Europe and I've loved every minute of it. When Mclaren started they were only making the 12C so maybe they are better put together than the cars that followed. Who knows. A great podcast, never thought I'd sit thru 50 mins but it flew past. Helps that you basically confirmed what I feared. You touched on the issue that I think is a major reason for the cars not holding their value, the fact that every car has the same basic tub and engine and they look very similar as well. Sooner or later the public are going to realise that they're being taken for a ride. The lack of quality control is mind blowing. How can you have body parts falling off a brand new car and I've seen other cars with appalling body panel fit. How does that even happen? Don't they have set fixing points and who they hell signs off on these cars? For the company to take an issue like being locked inside a car so lightly is frankly disgraceful especially with the history of fires, etc. What if someone's kid got locked in! For that reason alone this company DOES NOT deserve to succeed. Someone else here sums it up perfectly, Ron Dennis would never have allowed this. McLaren ditched a perfectionist and replaced him with a bunch of corporate arseholes whose only interest was maximising profit over a relatively short period so they could cash in on their bonuses.

    Coming from a massive petrol head straight out of uni, I can safely say I’ve never heard of this mclaren problem other than salomondrin. Thanks for brining this to the attention of the general public guys! Maybe this will force them to speak out about it, this secret has been kept to a minority for too long in my opinion.

    Great video guys and well done for being honest about all of the issues McLaren have. I think another element to the McLaren ownership problem is the fact that no one would dare to own one without a warranty, which significantly increases the annual ownership costs. This in turn means the typical 2nd or 3rd owner of this type of car won't touch one and the resale values will continue to fall. I honestly think we could see them at £50k and at that price people might take a punt on them and if they go wrong you literally write them off.
    Such a shame as i love the concept of their cars

    I have a 2012 Mclaren MP4-12C, I had it about 4years now. I've had cars from an AC 427 Cobra to a Porshe 935, that I traded in to buy my Mclaren MP4-12C. In my opinion, the Mclaren is by FAR and AWAY, in looks, it's really the most beautiful car I've ever seen and the FASTEST. I have to admit, that because there are very few shops that know how to service that car, that the Mclaren Dealer loves to see me drive in my car for the yearly service, very expensive. I've had no serious problems with it, and it never left me stranded. If I could choose only one car to own, it would be my 1983 Porsche 944 just because it's a sports car that I can use as a station wagon. The hatchback makes that car worthwhile. But for JUST the most exciting, great looking car, which you 'guys' call soulless, I would say that my car the Mclaren is the BEST car in the world. Really.

    This is hilarious, the ‘locked in the car’ story is straight out of the late 90’s TVR handbook!
    We love British cars and go on about ‘best of British’ etc, but if they go wrong at all, we push them out of business.
    My TVR is the least reliable car I have, but it will be the last to go, because it’s a hand-built British car with way more character than anything German!

    For years the trip to Geneva was a fixed item on my agenda. It was the place where all the industry honchos got together and chatted, often over lunch at Alpina, and looked over some of the specialists like Ruf. One day I was there when they were still setting up and I sat in the Pininfarina W-12 Nardo protype, looking down the aisle and the entrance doors were open. The car smelt of oil and sweat, not only were the keys in it, but the ignition worked . . . at this point a lovely Italian bloke asked me, ever so politely, to get out . . . if only I had noticed the car was live earlier ;-[]

    Love *love* LOVE that you guys speak honestly about car brands - very few people on social media do that! It's essentially you, and The Car Guys, from what I can see. I wish "car influencers" in general realised that the relentless fake positivity is a real turn-off. Even when they're trying to make negative points, most car CZcamsrs are super fake about it e.g. "One thing I have to say I really hate about this car is... it's just TOO GOOD! And I want to emphasise that I'm not being negative about the brand in this video - I love this brand!"
    What puts me off about McLaren, aside from all the points you mentioned, is that the company is so thin-skinned and petty-minded. That Sam wouldn't be invited to press events because he's been critical of the company is beyond weak; and the fact they block customers who criticise them on social media is truly pathetic. It's laughable really. If the company can't cope with a bit of criticism, they can't cope with anything. IMO, they'll be out of business before long unless someone with deep pockets buys them, and sorts the company out.

    I’ve had a 570GT and currently own a 720S. Aside from a couple of issues with trim pieces that needed to be reattached and some software bugs that resolve themselves when restarting the cars (or rebooting the Iris system), they’ve been mechanically solid for me. In terms of performance, both cars have been great, but the 720S in particular is amazing. It’s insanely fast, it’s super comfortable, and the handling feel is much better than modern super cars with electric steering. I’d wouldn’t be concerned buying another one.

    As I understand it the electrical glitches in McLarens road cars appear to be caused by the lithium battery not being fully (and I mean fully) charged (at least that's what I've read on the few owners forums out there from 'keeper' owners.
    Since 90% of issues spoken about tend to err on the electrical side keeping the battery topped up would fix 90% of issues (Key not found, flat battery etc. Not sure what to do about the engine blowing up but then that appears to be only when driven incredibly hard around a track.
    An equally good watch is the 5,000,000 miles in a McLaren video by Thorney Motorsport whom specialise in running and repairing these cars. They have hard evidence that long term ownership is nowhere near as bad as you're led to believe by people whom are privileged to be able to jump in and out of a new car every few months or weeks if they're journos or super rich.
    One thing that's agreed on by everyone is the lack of support from the dealerships and/or head office around these issues that is really letting the brand down and they will certainly fold if they don't get their act together.
    However, their attitude toward customers is systematic across a market that is only interested in taking your money from you. I owned my BMW for 2 years and had a failed injector strand me on my driveway for a week while I wondered why the car wouldn't start. BMW wanted to charge me £1800 to change all 6 injectors.
    Long story short I 'obtained' their software online which told me exactly which injector was failing. I replaced it myself saving £1600. That was back in 2014.
    That diagnostic software started me on a journey and my car hasn't seen a BMW garage ever since, for anything outside of wear and tear items. It has been tuned to over 500 dynoed horse power at the wheels running for the past 20000 miles (over 400bhp for the previous 30000) and runs better than the day I bought it off of them.
    If you're not afraid of doing your own maintenance, are planning to keep the car and can afford the £80,000 - £100,000 on a supercar which, as it turns out is pretty maintenance friendly and once cost north of 200,000 you should be snapping these up.
    I'm not a McLaren fan boy and didn't even consider buying one until very recently while looking for my dream car which was and still is a Porsche 911 turbo. I heard about McLaren prices bombing and started investigating, thoroughly.
    I'm pretty sure that the Porsche can wait for now :)

  • @Mr_Lemon_Law

    I've had 4: 650 Spider, 570s, 720 Spider and now 600LT. I've had problem with one car but was quickly made happy by the dealer/McLaren. The bigger concern to me is of depreciation which probably arises from overproduction and rapid release of new models. I am sure McLaren is aware that long term value of the brand is tied to value retention of late model cars on the used market. If there are 100 720s models for sale at any one time and they aren't selling for 6-8 months, that is a problem when trying to sell new ones. I've had mulitple models and iterations of all the others Lambo, Ferrari, Aston, Porshe, Audi, etc and can honesty say that when a McLaren is running right, the driving experience is better than all of them. Every drive reinforces the engineering quality and legacy of the brand. Thanks for the video. Very enjoyable to hear other opinions.
