E-scooters aren't classed with more lethal motorized vehicles like motorcycles, buses, trucks, cars. They don't require seatbelts, rearview mirrors, traffic signals, etc. the way cars are. It's personal choice to wear protective gear with these light scooters. If you watch more of his videos, you'll see that where possible, NYC has even designated separate lanes for traffic like scooters, bikes, skates, pedicarts. I've noted that these e-scooter and e-bike users do observe traffic lights but have the advantage of slipping between car lanes and passing through red lights, once they observe stop signs and see it's safe to do so. Bicycles can't use traffic lanes along with cars, it's just too dangerous and could plug up traffic... but are required to observe the same rules like traffic lights, signs, traveling on the same side of the road as the flow of traffic, etc. So it's personal choice for adults to wear protective gear. One would hope, however, that parents would make their kids (minors) wear head and elbow/knee/glove protection on toys like bikes, razors, scooters. Kids don't know how to protect themselves, they're uncoordinated and vulnerable. And as you already know, skateboarders often wear gear because they expect to fall a lot while practicing new tricks in skateboard parks or competing. One would hope that parents and guardians would insist that kids (minors), wear protective gear. It prevents life-altering permanent injury. Many skateboarders wear them because the only way to master fancy tricks is to fall until you master them. They expect it. Broken bones and scabs seem to come with the territory. But the city provides skateboard parks for skateboarders. :). Some of them, annoyingly, use public and private stairs, railings, concrete planters, park benches, subway cars... anything to play. It damages property and it's dangerous around seniors and the disabled, but seems to be a badge of rebellion among some of them. It isn't harmless. I've even seen one of Afraz' recent evening videos where a skateboarder was speeding on the beautiful Highline Park. I'm not even sure skateboards are allowed there, and it could end badly for pedestrians. They had to get out of his way, he was rude and inconsiderate, it isn't what the park was intended for. Everyone else was sharing and being courteous. His lack of consideration angered me. I was hoping someone official would catch him. And he wore no protective helmet, either. Our bicyclists all wear head gear on the streets, but drivers out here are really terrible, and there are white memorial "ghost bikes" all over my city, marking where bicyclists have been killed by motorists. I get tense when I see Afraz squeezing between cars or crossing a red light intersection, but he's an adult, and it's legal, and he always stops and checks first. Still, I cringe. Be careful, Afraz!
