I cant Express enough ,how I love thee fact you give these majestic trees ,that were enjoyed by us ,in a yard for years and years a whole new purpose and life. Makeing it able to be enjoyed for even longer . A second life. Thank you. Awsome video.
My dad and I planted three Chinese Chestnuts in 1959. I milled one myself with a chainsaw and made a mountain dulcimer out of it. The other two I gave a local guy with a mill. I traded one log and several white oaks for one of the other logs milled. I have a bunch of lumber I don't know what I will do with, but it is precious to me.
I'm a single senior in the suburbs of Detroit. I stumbled upon you and love to watch you work. Your instructions are easy to follow and a good timber (pun intended) for listening. Your choice of background music is calming. Thanks for sharing your life.
thank you appreciate you watching,
That chestnut is Beautiful Nathan! My grandfather born in 1892, talked about taking pillow cases and gathering chestnuts for roasting. Here in southeast Pa. The American Chestnut made up about 60% of the forests here. I always have a few on my 8acres but they never get more than an inch or two before the blight takes them out. The American Chestnut Foundation has been working on developing a blight resistant tree for years. Chestnut was often used as a base to be covered with veneer since there was so much of it. Barns, chicken houses and houses were built from it since it was so plentiful and had to be used after the blight hit. I've work with chestnut quite a few times and it's great wood to use. It reminds me a lot of sassafras in the grain but has a unique color of it own and ages down to a lovely brown color. Thanks Kindly Nathan. Every log you saw is like opening a Christmas present. These slabs should go over really big I'd say. How many times do you run into a log and slabs like that? And music wise, check out "Red Tail Wing". They make great music. Peace and Saw dust! My house is circa 1928 and all the millwork and interior doors are American chestnut. You say what I’ve heard before. The trees were dying quickly and there was an abundance of lumber as a result. None of our woodwork is painted and it is truly beautiful wood.
NICE!!!!
thanks Bill,
Wow, I never knew Chinese chestnut could look that beautiful. I hope you find more and share with us. Can’t wait to see the rest of that log. I have a feeling what’s left looks even better.
This guy's accent rocks!
Just a good ole boy, never meaning no harm
Some amazing slabs of chestnut there Nathan. So good to see you saving this wonderful wood from being used as firewood. It will have a long life as a treasured object bringing joy to people as it did when a live tree!
Wow, that Chinese Chestnut is beautiful. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Such a gorgeous piece of wood deserves to be placed in featured pieces such as mantles, tables of all types, desks, as well as wood veneer for dressers and highboys and so much more. LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL FIGURED GRAIN!!!!!!!
thanks appreciate it,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 I come from a long line of Master Craftsmen and learned about the trade I developed a love of woodworking and have always been fascinated with the grain and experience the joy of how to best use such beautiful grain to give the best display of the natural beauty of such woods.
I am in the uk love watching shows about RV s now I am addicted to your channel
thanks, appreciate you watching,
That’s a treasure. I like it.
Yes sir 👍
I don't understand why so many people watch your films and don't press the like button. not hard to do and shows appreciation for your efforts. cheers Thor from Tasmania
Thank you
It's awesome dry, and the beauty after you put water on it is so beautiful
My home was built back in the 19teens. All of the doors and trim are American Chestnut. I baby all of it and have fought off 20 years of my wife wanting to paint some pieces.
That is some beautiful wood. I just wish these videos came with smell. I love the way fresh sawn wood smells.
Thanks for watching
Well Nathan from all the comments it looks like you were missed,,, We are all happy you have the saw mill you have talked about for awhile Congratulations!
Thanks buddy. appreciate it
Wow . Black walnut has been my favorite wood for over 50 years. But that's giving it a run for first place. Absolutely gorgeous. I bet it would finish in toung oil even better. That's my favorite finish for walnut. 😊
indeed, hard to decide which is best,
You sawing into a log is like opening up a pirates treasure chest. You don't really know if your going to find empty bottles of rum or jewels and gold. This one truly speaks for itself.
The crotch
That is some beautiful chestnut ,glad to be back sawing with you good stuff.
Very nice lumber, much prettier than I would have thought.

I’ve been interested in the history of the American chestnut since I went to college at a small school in Bristol, Tennessee in the ‘70s. While day hiking on the Appalachian Trail, I saw these massive stumps, many of them 10 feet in diameter. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but later read a book on the history of the area, and learned of the chestnut blight. It actually started in the 1800s, but by the 1930s was pervasive, and eventually wiped out the chestnuts, which were the dominant species in Eastern forests.
That would make a beautiful table or bar top. You really hit gold today!
Absolutely beautiful slabs ... so good your back with that awesome sawmill ...thank you!
I could watch this all night long!! Thank you for all the fantastic videos!!
Almost heaven, Northeastern Tennessee.
Home sweet home
MY MY MY WHAT BEAUTIFUL WOOD YOU HAVE!!

What the hay hay?!
@@everlastinggrass: It's easy to see he got a woody.
Oh yeah! Bring it on! Beautiful deep grain. When you poured water over it, you could look down into it. Wow. Thanks for sharing!
Our house was built in 1927 and has chestnut crown molding, window trim, baseboard, and banaster in the living room. That slab would be perfect for a coffee table. Beautiful. Shame that we lost so much American Chestnut.
First cut reveal is nice. Second even better. The 2nd slab is great. That's gonna be good money.
Omg! Those slabs are just gorgeous!!
yes better than expected,
Never thought that watching a sawmill would be this cool. That is some beautiful wood
Hi Nathan at present I am building a bedroom tv cabinet verses clothes storage WORMY CHESTNUT totally awesome beautiful wood. I have been a cabinet maker / stair builder of radius custom stairs, since I was 16 I am now 74. I have worked on some really beautiful lumber. As well as wormy white oak. That tree that you are working on is worth a lot of $$$$$$. Do not let it go too cheap. Thanks for the video you know what you have.
Beautiful slabs. Thanks for your channel, without you I would never get to see this. I love beautiful wood and am grateful for all of you independent processors who take the time to get the best out of quality logs.
For me this is easily the most beautiful wood I have ever seen. It is magnificent.
My great grandfather would cut and mill american and horse chestnut which I think was what you have there and build furniture church pews and such,he would have been happy to have such a mill as yours ours was a blade and carriage with a top saw blade he also liked to saw white oak which he sold to boat builders and of course black walnut and butternut.Thank you for your show its very calming T-Man/Ct
Wood is so natural and beautiful and you do a great job ,you really inspire me to look in to this feild. I can see how rewarding it is and the beauty of it. Thank You
That is spectacular. Thank you so much for sharing. I love your drone shots with music. Very inspirational.
Thanks. Appreciate it
That's some beautiful lumber

Glad that the LT40 lets you get the most out of these logs. That chestnut looks amazing.
yes, should have upgraded years ago,
These slabs are awesome!!! You truly have something special here. Can’t wait to see what you turn this into. Thanks for the awesome video 👍👍
That tree will make some amazing bar tops or table tops. Simply beautiful!
That slab is beautiful best yet I wish I lived in the USA , you are so lucky
Nathan, You are the master at slabbing some beautiful crotch figured wood. I hope you never stop posting videos...
Don’t plan on it 👍👍
I was in a thrift store one day some years back and came across a homemade picture frame that had been made from wormy Chestnut. It was beautifully crafted, tight corners, very nice hand chiseled detailing. 24 by 36 inches. I happened to have an original oil painting in that size....a nice pasture and barn scene done by a local individual. That picture and frame went together like a duck and a pond.
Gorgeous. The grain looks swirlier than walnut. I'll take it!
I love seeing the water going on and the colour showing..ever get tired of that..this one is a beauty
Great video completely!!! Gods creations in a log. What an artist!! The country artistry also. Be safe!
Beautiful slab of timber I can see tables and office desk tops in that !
Great stuff, Nathan .. keep up the good work, and I'll stay tuned. Thank you.
You called it Nathan, amazing wood! And I agree, that will give walnut a run for the money. The only downside I see is having to wait for it to dry. ❤️💛🧡💙💜
Yes sir. Stack it and forget about it
Yeah buddy! Good stuff.
When American chestnut started succumbing to the blight, folks started planting Chinese chestnut for the nuts. Have seen them planted as ornamentals, specimens, and as screens between board-fence and the roadside. Those two and Chinquapin are all related as one family. Butternut, Heartnut, and the walnuts are a second family. The Hickories and Pecans are a third family of temperate nut-trees. Beautiful grain on that tree - really nice deep tawny color.
Those are some amazing slabs! Keep up the work with showing the world the beauty you are finding in nature!
That is a gorgeous piece of wood. Incredible.
Enjoy your videos, the wood grains (figures) and it is a special joy to listen to you.
Really beautiful wood. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful slabs of wood!!! Nice to see that finally someone knows how to build a set of sawhorses!! R and W ( R, carpenter 48yrs.)
I am actually getting into this aspect of the Timber/Lumber Industry myself. I smashed that like button, and punched the SUBSCRIBE button! Very beautiful, and intricate pieces of Lumber my friend!!! I love the Heart Rings, very clean, and detailed. I'm glad you didn't hit any nails!!! I look forward to seeing more of your videos like this. Thank you for the awesome tutorial. ~Timber Miner Tony T.
WOW 😮!!! Those are gonna make some beautiful tables! Nice job
I only stop by to your channel every once in a while. Just to see what your cutting up and man you never fail to amaze. That’s some beautiful slabs. Thanks for sharing
Nice stuff, Nathan. Very, very nice. I make the occasional cigar humidor and that chestnut would make some seriously beautiful boxes.
Saw up a walnut stump. Gorgeous!
I have no idea how I came to click on one of your videos, but I bet it’s because I’ve been watching August Hunicke’s tree felling videos for some reason. Also have no idea how I came to click on his. Anyway, glad I did, because your Tennessee accent, your beautiful drone footage of your ranch, awesome music choice, and unhurried video style just makes watching feel like relaxation therapy. So, from and Australian fan, keep the awesome content coming.
appreciate it, thanks for stopping by,
thank you
Gorgeous slabs. I've never seen chestnut like that. Thank you.
Phantasmagorical.
Can't get any better, awesome
This is the first time I have seen Chinese Chestnut in all the years I was in the millwork business. Yes, as you said Nathan, similar to butternut. Absolutely beautiful. I hope you get more Chestnut logs. That would make beautiful paneling, trim, cabinets, etc.
Absolutely beautiful grain patterns, just amazing. I know l keep saying this, it never gets old does it!
never,
These first 2 slabs shown together would have made a delightful table for an average sized home with perhaps black epoxy through the middle. Again, I would like to have seen at least one more slab, or two, cut. Fantastic wood. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
that is some really good looking slabs. As I always say "Every log is an adventure." thanks
One of these days could you show us some slabs that have been air and/or kiln dried? It would be neat to see before and after.
I would be interested if there was any shrinkage and how much. Would would even be better if the before and after moisture content was measured. Sorry I'm a chemist
Absolute perfection expressed in the wood.
The icing on today's cake is the music, and also the font on the opening date stamp. It's just great to have you back.
Well --------- That is amazing , carn't wait to see the rest of it , You have had a win there .
Thanks buddy
Chestnut is such a gorgeous wood. Great find.

Yes. Thanks for watching
That first cut I thought wood make a beautiful coffee table. Love to see it finished.
That is some of the best slabs I've seen. not just on your channel but on several others, such as Northwestsawyer and MattCremona's channels. Beautiful wood, better than a LOT of Walnut.
Thanks buddy. I agree
That's absolutely beautiful! It's got me wanting to take down my chestnut trees. Everyone hates those spiky nut pods but my dad loved them. I guess that's why they are still standing. 👍👍
This was quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching 👍👍
Wonderful slabs, Nathan. Hardly any sapwood either. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the log.
So cool when you reveal whats inside of these logs, and this one was definitely special. Love the channel...thanks for sharing!!!
