The most recent Scout Sniper Course at the School of Infantry-East in Camp Geiger, North Carolina, saw the graduation of eight Marines on December 15, 2023. This event symbolizes the end of an era that dates back to World War I when the Marine Corps first utilized scout snipers. While these final graduates won't be designated as scout snipers, they will still be critical in maintaining the scouting and precision marksmanship capabilities of infantry battalions. This shift is part of broader changes within the Marine Corps, including replacing scout sniper platoons with scout platoons dedicated to reconnaissance. Previously, scout sniper platoons consisted of formally trained marksmen with reconnaissance skills, alongside Marines who received on-the-job training. The transition from 18-Marine scout sniper platoons to 26-Marine scout platoons aligns with the Marine Corps restructuring efforts under Force Design 2030, aimed at enhancing reconnaissance capabilities in anticipation of potential conflicts with technologically advanced adversaries. By focusing training and evaluations on scouting, the Scout Platoon model ensures commanders have the necessary tools to accomplish their missions effectively. Despite these changes, the Marine Corps will continue to train snipers through the Reconnaissance Training Center and the Marine Raider Training Center. These reconnaissance snipers will be integrated within reconnaissance battalions, while some infantrymen will receive training as precision marksmen, available for use as needed by infantry battalion commanders.

Hunters of Gunmen. HOG’s!! Sad to see the course go. Not so sure it is the best course of action and I know most Marine Leaders feel the same way. But it is what it is and it will be interesting to see how the Corps adapts and overcomes this obstacle. It always does! Good job combat cameraman on getting in there and making it count! S/F!! And thanks Military Excursions for putting this together!! 👊🏻💯🇺🇸
