I rem seeing it for the first time, so sad, but the big plus was it didn't effect his amazing voice, 'The Show Must Go On' showed that. He was hitting notes equal to his first few albums. 'Queen' and 'Queen II' spring to mind.

This was released two months before Freddie died & we didn't know he was really ill. When my late husband & I saw this video we cried because our beloved Freddie was obviously very sick (we thought with cancer) & it was a shock. There was one more song Mother Love which Brian had to finish because Freddie had passed. It's fantastic that we can still see Queen in their pomp on video & that younger people are still blown away by them.

I’m not even sure how Freddie is standing there. He is really willing himself to get through this performance and if I’m not mistaken I think they did this in only one or two takes🎉 was too sick to do it too many times. I know he had his feet amputated, but I’m not sure might’ve been after he did this final video. Freddie also put down vocals to a bunch of songs for their final album. They put out, but was unable to do music video so they did compilation video of all different shots of Freddie in a bunch of different songs, and so impressive still is he put down the vocals to the show must go on in one take And it is perfect! At the end, where he raised his head looks into the camera and whispers “I still love you” that’s his way of saying goodbye between this song and show must go on. You can hear him saying goodbye to all his fans. RIP Freddie

Poor Freddie had a large open wound on the bottom of one of his feet at this time. It caused him terrible pain and limited his movements. I am both happy and sad when I see this. I feel joy that Freddie kept making music, and had the boys of Queen to support and love him.

I love that you mention that final look. It absolutely is like breaking the fourth wall. I always felt it was an acknowledgement by Freddie of what was to come. He knew this was it and he loved his fans. That final look feels like his farewell. He is smiling, he is making eye contact and sending a clear message to his fans. Fun fact, he painted the cats on his waistcoat! And seeing as you mentioned The Show Must Go On, again, he was so ill and laid the track in just one take. Amazing man, sadly missed.

This was the last video he did. His body was failing him, but his voice was still magnificent. They did this in black and white so the heavy makeup he had to wear wouldn't be quite so obvious.Peter Freestone (Freddie’s longtime assistant also known as Phoebe) said it wasn't actually correct that part of Freddie's foot was gone but that it had been damaged as a result of the HIV. Freddie endured a great deal of pain but he never gave up. He occupied his mind with making as much music as possible. I do think he felt somewhat guilty for leaving so soon and worried about his band mates and his fans so he tried to keep making music until he couldn't anymore. In the video “These are the Days of Our Lives” even his clothing caused him pain but he smiled at the camera nonetheless because he wanted us to remember him smiling. He was courage and dignity personified.

  • @laurenraubaugh9542

“I still love you” is also a reference to the song “Love of My Life”, which was always a crowd favorite too. Brian called that moment Freddie’s goodbye to the fans, so I think you’re exactly right. And yes, this was filmed in black and white to help hide his condition; “I’m Going Slightly Mad” was also in black and white for the same reason, though it did fit the tone of that song and the vibe of the video better than color might have.
Roger actually wrote this song to reflect back on his life, but as Brian said in the “Days of Our Lives” documentary, “it obviously took on a new meaning” when Freddie sang it.

  • @JaneRtn
    @JaneRtn Před 2 lety +25

He knew that any day could be the last time. At this point he was also laying down vocals using a drum machine so the band could use them after he had gone (he sang 3 versions of each line on basis they could sort it out “after” ). He knew time was running out and just said “give me as much as you can and I will sing it!!! Still makes me tear up just writing about it .

  • @sharonallforloveandpositiv5497

You should react now to Mother love. Recorded up to May 1991. Freddie couldn't finish the last verse. So Brian, after Freddie died a few years later sung the last verse. A beautiful song. The very last song in Freddie's life. I think this is why Freddie lasted so long, because of his love and passion for music. He just wasn't done yet. It was said to the band that Freddie was not expected to make it past Christmas 1990. But he almost made a whole other year in his condition. This just shows Freddie's resilience. After this, when Freddie knew his days were numbered, he decided to stop his medication, knowing he would die within a few weeks. Freddie chose his time to die. We definitely lost a legend. But he still lives on today through the music, 30 years on.

He had kaposi's sarcoma sore on his foot that's why he didn't move around. It ended up taking most of his foot. And if you watch the making of this video he limps. He did his best and it's beautiful. Brian May said he would spend hours in makeup, take a shot of vodka and prop himself up on the mixing board to sing, he told Brian to keep writing him things and he would sing. And he did until he couldn't any longer. This was his last video but Mother Love was his last song and it came out after he past. Beautiful! This just showed, not only what a superb performer he was, but a loving person he was as well. I love how Freddie just wore his heart on his sleeves and (in this case) his waistcoat. The last whisper of "I still love you" to his family, friends, and fans is still an emotional bullseye! Though Freddie never had children of his own, he loved cats and was a truly devoted cat daddy. The pictures on his vest are several portraits of his beloved fur babies. Brian, John, and Roger are doing all they can to keep a stiff upper lip. I can't imagine how much it must have ate at them inside to watch their friend and brother waste away. Even now their spiritual bond with Freddie is so strong not even death could break it. God bless Queen! You still have so much more Queen to check out. This was Freddie's last music video with him on screen, the very last song they recorded was "Mother Love" but he couldn't finish the last verse, which was ultimately sung by Brian May. Roger, Brian and John made a tribute song to Freddie released in 1997 called "No one but you (only the good die young)" that is just devastatingly beautiful!

No-one but the band members know how hard this must have been for them to go through this with Freddie, who was exceptionally brave and determined through his illness for as long as he could. He sang till he could sing no more, but what a wonderful legacy of music he left for us to enjoy. Please also listen to "Mother Love" and "A Winter's Tale".

That last line is even more potent when you know that in live performances, whenever he sang Love Of My Life, one of the lines in the song is "I still love you"; and Freddie would repeat that line in a talking voice to the audience out of sync with the song. He really was saying goodbye to his fans there.

That was his last video. He was so thin they actually had padding under his clothes as told in a documentary. His left foot was mostly gone, Brian said. The underneath had a massive wound. He said Freddie spent hours with makeup trying to cover up marks on his face. They did it in black and white to help cover it up. His “I still love you” was his goodbye to all his fans. He truly did love his fans. That’s why is connection to the crowd was so easy for him.
Yes, he knew he was close to the end. I agree with you about The Show Must Go On. The vocals on that one were outstanding. Brian said when he was leaning on the mixing desk with his mic and belted it out it was like a laser thru glass. He was shocked that Freddie was hitting notes he never heard him hit before. He recorded that not very long before he died. What a brave amazing man he was. There will never be anyone to come close to the one and only Freddie Mercury.

I listen to this song first time around 2004 probably, from their greatest hits Vol. 3 cassete. I was 15 and I thought I know what the lyrics all about. Fast forward to today, I finally can really understand and relate to what Freddy was telling us, Queen fans, and all the listeners in general. The message of love, to appreciate the time we have, to always remember the past. Not to be stuck in one, but to look back and see how far we have come through. And to always love our friends, spouse, the people who stood by us...
And that guitar solo, my God... I got shiver all over...
I would place this at top 5 Queen song of all time.

He said that, unlike most artists that try to project their emotions to the crowd, Freddie always felt like he was pulling the crowd in, drawing them close, and sharing his emotions intimately. So when he looked through the camera at every fan that will ever watch this video, he did not project his love, he pulled you into the video, into that room with him, and whispered his love into your ear, a special message for each person watching.

AIDS was horrible. It ate your body down to skin and bones. Freddie was amazing and a hero!! There was no cure for AIDS. Tens of thousands died. Magic was one of the first ones to have the treatment program. Freddie will always be a true hero of the worlds fans!

Roger Taylor wrote this song about his children and not as a Queen song but Freddie kept coming into the studio and begging for things to sing so this is one of the songs that was given to him. Because of the timing, this song really seems to apply to Freddie and in a way, perhaps it did because the band knew Freddie was near the end which also meant the band was, for all intents and purposes also done. Those realities would create a lot of reflection and I think the line about just going with the flow seems to apply perfectly from Roger's perspective. This is a beautiful song and Freddie was so wonderful and brave to keep singing to the end for all of us and for his bandmates. Thank you for an excellent reaction.

Freddie - at this point - had only 1 and a half foot left. That is why he could not move a bit more. One can see him barely walking watching the documentary on this piece.

His voice sounded different on that last album, sounds higher, Roger Taylor is quoted as saying you can hear his voice is getting thinner, yet he still hits the notes...

They did this video in black and white to try to as much as they could at that point to cover up how sick Freddie was. BTS shows he had to have a ton of make up and you could see why they ended up not doing a color version. This was the final music video that Freddie did and according to one of the workers he did it so that his final video would not be a cartoon. Also he wanted to say goodbye since he knew that he did not have long left.

Have to say i cried and Brians voice, wow, dont know how he did it. Brian also singing Too Much Love can Kill you. wow wow wow. Freddie sang mother love, it was his last song i think and he didnt live to finish it. Brian finished it though, so moving.

Living life through your kids is poignant. I have 4 and they're all amazing. Freddie had no children and that is a loss to the world 😔

Brad would you do a reaction to Freddie Mercury's solo done in 1984? Time Waits for No One. It is gorgeous - make sure your wife is there too. I like her voice.
