You have to give the Burton/Keaton Batman some credit. Up until then pretty much all movie/tv depictions of superheroes were syrupy-sweet , ultra-noble good guys. Keaton brought a darkness to Batman that had never been seen before (on screen), and his portrayal was the starting point for all future depictions.
Without Batman (1989) and Michael Keaton we wouldn’t had Batman | The Animated Series, Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy, Batman Arkham Game series and the DCEU Batman and Matt Reeve’s The Batman
Both Burtons and Nolans films are amazing and have been a huge influence on Batman character following both depictionsand modern superhero film genre and marketing (especially Burton take on the character with the gothic tones and look of Gotham aided by Elfman’s score which has been used and replicated in a lot batman media).
Hindsight point about Joker. Not a single person had an issue with this in 1989.
Every Batman was awesome to me because I brought the kid in me to the movie. I was a little kid when I saw Adam West and I loved him and the style of shooting. I'd run around screaming "Bam" "Boom" and Holly cow Batman. I think everyone did their own version of Batman they knew. James Gunn can go be a baby by himself.
Batman Begins it's probablly my favorite version of his origin story, the movie basically takes every single element that makes Batman's character (except for maybe his detective skills) and puts them all together piece by piece throughout the movie, it shows a deep understanding of who Batman is and it makes for a very good character study. Also I'm glad you adressed the current state of Batman's comics and Gotham War, most people aren't aware of the violations these modern writers are doing to the characters, like what Jason Aaron did to the Punisher

It's easy to look back with 20/20 hindsight without anything to compare but when Michael Keaton's batman came out that was a crazy awesome movie & the obvious choice of Jack playing the Joker was supreme. Now with a zillion additional movies to compare it with OK but at the time it was a damn good movie

Growing up with first Batman exposure being the TV Adam West show, Superfriends/Scooby-Doo versions - the Burton movie was a BIG deal - this guy, James Gunn, is not much younger than I am - it isn't my favorite version either but certainly appreciate the path it blazed to get all the other hero franchises kick started.

I'm not a fan of the Burton Batman films but that's mostly because I'm not a fan of Tim Burton. Most of what James Gunn said about Keaton's Batman I can agree with to a point, except that the soundtrack is the worst part of those movies. I'ts in fact the best thing to come from them and are so iconic that they even used it for the intro of the 90's animated show.
The soundtrack rocked.
I must say James Gunn did a amazing job with the video game Lollipop Chainsaw, a very fun game to play. Also I think he did great job with Guardians Of The Gallaxy' movies. As far as his personality..... well, that's another subject.

I agree with you that James Gunn was just trying not to get chewed out by everyone, he thinks he knows EVERYTHING and yet his Flash film was under performing and down right terrible (besides Supergirl and Michael Keaton). I'm glad you addressed this, cause otherwise some idiot of a man (i might be one too, but their really dumb) would have tried to get behind James Gunn and say "he didn't mean it."

I too worry about the DC when the main guy does not respect the history of one of DC's main characters and the others. Speaking as a Batman fan since I was three years old (58 now), I just hope to get a Batman I can live with. (Patterson, by the way is a great Batman.)
Um... The Flash was made before he got there. Although he did add and cut somethings (Remember, it was Gunn who wanted Christian Bale to make that ending cameo, not Clooney.), the film was pretty much under the old regime.

He's right about the interpretations of Batman being inaccurate which is why Pattinson is superior but calling the Burton movies terrible with all the influence those movies had is ridiculous.

Batman is my favorite hero. So that said, It always would irk me when batman takes his cowl off and the black makup is gone… Batinson was the only time he takes off the cowl and it’s still on! Finally someone pays attention to detail.

It’s his hobby.
Burton lit the fire and his first movie was a cultural event. However, anyone that subsequently started reading the comics found out pretty quickly that he did not get the character. Batman returns illustrates this well with an opening scene in which Bruce is just sitting around, waiting for something to happen. He also clearly was more interested in the villains, and in the case of Penguin and Catwoman, giving them the most oddball origins possible (cat cpr? Da FAQ). Nolan did his Nolan thing and gave us arguably the best take on the Joker we’ve gotten outside of animation. For me, in terms of live action, the current winner is Matt Reeves. He got the assignment more so than any director prior. Still not perfect and I’m curious to see where he takes it.

WB chopped 30 minutes out of the theatrical release of Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice chopping the hell out of the storyline and ruining it, then released the Ultimate Edition with everything added back in making it 10X better, but still many fans hated the theatrical release and blamed Snyder when it was WB screw up.
Then they destroyed JL by releasing Jostice League, and then CZcamsrs and other influencers mocked the fans, saying there was no Snyder Cut, and that it would never see the light of day, and they knew because WB insiders told them it did not exist.
Then AT&T bought WB, and wanted more HBO Max subscriptions, so they released Zack Snyder's Justice League insiders at WB told CZcamsr did not exist to grab subscriptions, and the WB got mad at Snyderverse fans and called us toxic, and said they were never working with Snyder again and were working on greater projects that fans wanted like Batgirl and Blue Beatle! Batgirl got canned by Zazlav for bankruptcy money saves, and will never see the light of day, once Discovery bought WB from AT&T.
James Gunn's Suicide Squad did worse than Black Adam, and Black Adam, Shazam 2, the Flash, and Blue Beatle have all BOMBED at the box office as well, and they are hemorrhaging money, they are releasing the Snyder Trilogy hoping once again to fleece the Snyderverse fans for money since we didn't go to any more of their shows after they called us toxic.
Disney didn't diss the Sony or Fox Marvel fans, but embraced them, brought their heroes into the MCU through the multiverse gave fans what they wanted and never called them toxic.
Not Warner Bros. Warner Bros hired Snyder to do a Dark Justice League to mirror the success of The Dark Knight since they couldn't get Nolan to direct, but he did work as a producer on all of Snyder's films, but WB seeing the success of the MCU now wanted their films Disneyfied.
James Gunn can only mock Snyder's DCEU, which he has repeatedly done in movies and on Peacemaker streamed on HBO Max, and the bad trend followed suit in the Flash, because DC doesn't want serious comics as Nolan or Snyder produced, they want laugh tracks and Sunshine and Rainbows as Disney. James Gunn can only mock, he can't do Nolan and Snyder level serious films, and GOG worked fine because no one knew the characters and he was able to get by with the comedy mixed in, but Gunn has NO EXPERIENCE working with established DC characters, and can't do them seriously.
WB was basically Hard Rock in analogy, and they saw the Disney Boy Bands and wanted their films to be Boy Bands too, but all they did was anger the Hard Rocking Serious Comic Fans, and did nothing to really attract massive numbers from the Disney MCU Boy Bands to come over and buy their product, so they learned to produce failure and bankruptcy!
Way to go Warner Bros. Now that you've made the Snyderverse mad at you, you are shocked we are NOT buying your garbage MCU Disney Boy Band wannabe trash sets with our money. You might as well know you're getting Gunned down too, we have no interest in watching Gunn's attempt at a GOG Boy Band rebrand of DC!
So it is NO SUPRISE that James Gunn mocked Keaton's Batman nor Nolan's films, mockery is what he does, not serious DC content! I'm done with James Gunn!

Batman forever and batman and Robin are subjectively great movies. Just do one simple thing and imagine both as Lego Batman with NSFW commentary sprinkled in with Ivy and Reporter. Gunn is not the savior that people think he is.
He's got a name that sells itself, and that's the bulk of the reason he got the job. He does good work, but that does not mean he will continue to do what fans want him to do. Peacemaker, Superman, and Batman are all very different.
Gunn works for other people. His job is to make them money using DC properties with his name on it.
Case in point, he's talking down on previous Batman movies that DON'T have his name. His job is to promote something else that people will buy into BECAUSE it has his name. Anything preserved from the comics is only what is necessary to sell a new product, not a traditional one.
Just like you (Jay) have nothing if no one knows your name, James has nothing without his own name. DC and WB know it, and that's why he will continue to do this. Plus, he's NOT going to give you the ideal Superman that comic readers want. He is NOT.
Gunn's Superman is going to be for a WORLDWIDE audience. Not long-time readers. People online who think he's here to preserve the purity of comics on the big screen are getting it wrong. Just like every Spider-Man on screen gets the character about half right, Gunn's Superman will be about the same, plus something for NEWER audiences. You're going to get a fraction of what you want at best.
He's going do the same with Batman and everything else he touches because he's going to be the next guy to force DC characters to function on-screen like Marvel characters. Again, his job is to make money for other people, not preserve the purity of these characters - the latter is not his or anyone else's priority and never will be.

Michael Keaton Batman's was pretty enjoyable, Christian Bale did a good job playing Batman. Especially, Robert Pattinson's The Batman. James Gunn has crossed the line, and his gonna pay for that! The real issues with James Gunn is, he is one dimensional Writer, Director who can only do Teenage Angst Comedy dialogue character played by Adult Actors with Action Figure type Role of Storyline. There's little maturity facing consequence other than Joyride Theme Park Ride most likely Safe. Michael Shannon - General Zod (MOS) said it best the difference between playing an interesting Mature Role in Zack Snyder MOS versus The Flash (Promoted by James Gunn).

FWIW: I _WAS_ planning on seeing the motion picture *BLACK ADAM* in the cinema, _MAINLY_ for the post-credit scene with Henry Cavill as SUPERMAN.
When I heard Cavill had been dumped from the role, it PUT THE KIBOSH on that plan {i.e., seeing the movie}.
I will NOT go see *BA,* nor will I ever see -- unless circumstances change drastically, which I doubt -- a future SUPERMAN movie helmed by Mr. Gunn.

It is important to note that on some articles and even in his twitter 2 years ago he said Batman was his favorite character in comics, so that might explain why he's extra cynical on portrayals of him.

First off, your Catwoman is a divine cosplay 🏅 Secondly, James Gunn should be careful with how he words things. Yes those old Batman shows/movies had some rather quriky acting but they were beloved and had things in them that reflect what was going on in the world at that time. Frank Miller and Michael Keaton work as Batman was game changers for the character at a time that needed them. Wow! Love it or hate it, I've never heard anyone dis Danny Elfman's sublime score. Batman Begins was the Batman film I wanted but credit where it's due, Michael Keaton was a perfect Bruce Wayne. He's right about the action but the whole movie was shot on confined soundstages so doing a kinetic Batmobile chase was near impossible.

Batman Returns was very good. The Dark Knight was the best superhero movie I have seen. The Dark Knight Rises was a mess. But I don't see where Gunn is going.

I still think Tom King has written the worst of batman, but yeah I agree on Frank Miller. His script for Robocop 2 was cut dramatically and he made it into a graphic novel, after reading it i understood why a ton of it had to be cut from the script, but wow a very interesting graphic novel Robocop 2 is. Fantastic entertaining movie, has a lot of gold in there. Not half as good a movie as Robocop but equally entertaining just like Predator 2

Yeah, my mom is the same way too; bringing up sh** from the past every time she’s in a not-so good moods 🤬 lol! But anyhow, yeah, this is the 1st time for me hearing about James Gunn’s past comments about Michael Keaton & Christian Bale’s Batman. It certainly seems like he has an unsounded grudge towards them. Now, because it has been many years ago since he made those comments, I’m only hoping that he sees things differently now. But, I’m not holding my breath for it & it definitely makes me feel even less confident about his plans for the DCU. I didn’t even agree with him having to start the whole DC cinematic universe all over again as it F’s up the DCEU continuity, but that’s a totally separate argument for another time. I genuinely do try to give people the benefit of the doubt & while I wholeheartedly disagree with Gunn’s bias opinions towards Burton & Nolan’s Batmen, I will give him that benefit. But, he’s already on shaky ground as it is. I do want to ask you though, given the lackluster performances of recent DCEU films, do you think the DCU that Gunn is trying to establish will have any chance of success?
Batman 89 is still my favorite Batman film. Hands down. Batman Returns is my second.
James Gunn Didn't talk trash about Batman & Robin (1997) and George Clooney as the Cape Crusander in that film and I heard that Gunn actually likes Clooney as Batman in the Schumacher-Verse which to me it probably explains why he cut of Michael Keaton's ending in The Flash movie and replace him with George Clooney
You're really letting James Gunn off easy with what he said about the soundtrack! It is one of the greatest soundtracks of all time by the legend Danny Elfman.
I have no confidence in JG/PS running of the DC movie division. His announcement of the chapter one lineup is weak with mostly obscure characters. And it is rife with nepotism.

He's such a liar; it looks like his DCU will focus on movies he will enjoy, and no one else reminds me a lot of Lucasfilm and Kathleen Kennedy. I will never understand why Warner Bros. hired him.
