was the 496 a stock engine? and how much hp did it have? i have a 327 sitting in my garage that I need to get fixed up so I can take it out sometime soon

Baley Hannah Nope, it's not stock. Don't know the hp figure or the exact history of this car, but the original engine was a 427. Thanks for watching!

The 496 is a Vortec engine that GM put in 3/4 and 1 ton pickups such as the Silverado, Sierra, and even the Avalanche 2500 HD, the 496 is also one of GM's LS-series of engines. Hope this helps.

LKS Academic The 496 was called the "8100" series. It was an 8.1L gas V8 that made 340hp, and 455lb-ft. It was a truck engine. On the bright side, because of the massive displacement, with some massaging, it's easy to get 500hp out of it and not worry about breaking anything in the stock block.
