‘Racist tropes’ block Americans from seeing full poverty picture: Rev. William Barber III

  • The racist myth around Black poverty is as old as America. Republican candidates have been exploiting it for decades, but Donald Trump has been saying the quiet parts out loud on the campaign trail, casually painting an entire portion of the electorate - low wage workers - as an ugly stereotype. Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign, Rev. Dr. William Barber joins Ali Velshi to explain why there is strength in numbers. “The largest swing vote with the most potential is 30 million voters. 7 million of poor, low wage voters voted last time, but 30 million didn't. That's the largest potential swing vote in the country that could fundamentally transform who gets elected and the kinds of policies that are implemented after the elections.”

And unfortunately, like you stated, we are still talking about it. For those of us in the bottom class, we are invisible until it's time to go to the polls. I will not be voting this time around, because after all votes are counted, whoever wins the big white house makes sure to take care of the upper classes. We are made to believe there is no such thing as a class system in the US, because we are fed the same bs about how great America is, everyone has a chance to make it, and ain't Democracy grand. Pull up your bootstraps and blah, blah, blah, blah. I am not a Christian, but Pastor Barber and those like him, stand up for those who have no voice in this country, unlike our politicians who grin and talk out both sides of their mouths.

This ain’t new, this is exactly what caused them to murder Fred Hampton. He didn’t write a book, he got those people together through the grassroots, boots on the ground and the people listened diligently and considered. That is what made him more of a threat than Malcolm X or Dr. King could have ever been. He was young, ambitious, educated, and not afraid which is not so bad if you’re leading a movement of just poor black people. The threat to the order of wealth in the United States happened when he assembled leaders just like himself from several different types of poor ethnic groups around the country with big followings. The order became why are we poor people fighting one another as the rich continue to get richer and blame poverty on poor people.

I remember attending a conference and a young white man made the statement that there were more blacks on welfare than whites, I stated that that was incorrect that there was more whites nationwide than blacks. He refused to believe me a black person and insisted that his statement was correct. Because I was older and understood his perception, I turned to the leader of the conference who was white that he needed to correct the young man and he did based on the size of the welfare budget no way more blacks who were on 13 percent of the population. The young man did not return to the conference the next day.

Neither party has been particularly good at addressing the issues of people who live in poverty (of all races, not just white people) in recent years, and it's been driving me crazy! I agree that we do need to have conversations about race and racism, but even democrats often forget that poverty is oppression, too, and it can affect all races.

The orobkem is that gop/give to the richest and take from everybody else, poor and middle income alike. Remember, Trump gop gave the richest a 40% corporate tax rate cut in 2017- and then Trump tried to end the Affordable Care Act during the pandemic. The trump/gop do this, they give unaffordable tax gifts to the richest while cutting programs and services to cover the cost. If the richest pay their fair share if taxes, the economy works for everybody. Trump hid his tax records, and we found out why. He made millions but used loopholes for the rich to only pay $750 in taxes. His rich friends think that is fine and that poor people can pay taxes on their income too, or their food and medicine. OP uses emotional issues to bamboozle voters into viting against their own financial interests-if they are nit the true beneficiaries of gop policies, which is the richest.

Most Americans consider themselves 'middle class', or at least that's how it used to be- even if they're not. What U.S. politicians are really shy of mentioning is the working class- many of whom have become the working poor. The true middle class has dwindled after 40+ years of neoliberal economic policies that have seen the largest upward transfer of wealth from the many to the few in history.

This guy is right; we are a large voting block and they *should* be trying to gain our votes! Also a big segment of the poor are elderly and disabled people on Social Security which pays less than the lowest paid job in America! I hear Kamala Harris talk about "working families" all the time. What about an older or disabled person who lives alone and can no longer work? Aren't they important? I already know what Trump thinks about us; "They should just die because...the expense." Kamala should jump in and claim this group and I bet her poll numbers would jump up notably! I have sent her a message to that effect. Hope she listens and takes the advice!

Undereducated and under informed people are either apathetic and don't vote or they're misinformed and vote against their own interests. It's a conundrum, but I'm glad to see this wonderful pastor speaking to it.

Where are the child tax credits ??They definitely are needed at a time like this. What about dental programs for the less fortunate ? Because dental prices are very much unaffordable. What about car insurance ? The prices continue to spike. Don’t even get me started on grocery and gas prices. Lol Addressing all these issues can be a huge step in the right direction. Inflation went for the jugglers … ! We didn’t ask for Covid but its effects ripped through houses like a cyclone . Come on now…. ! All of this was a ripple effect on this country and needs to be addressed none stop 🛑 ! Thank you Rev…. May God continuous. blessings, strength, wisdom, peace, love and joy be upon you on this journey. We the people appreciate you very deeply for being our voice. In a time it is desperately needed. Thank you to all platforms who choose to address these issues ! 👏👏👏👏👏 God is definitely watching all of us ! 🙏
