  • Apple has released a new 11" and 13" iPad Air with M2... and new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with the all-new M4 chip and a super bright Tandem OLED display! There's a new "Pencil Pro", a Magic Keyboard with function keys (for some), and some good news on pricing (along with the inevitable increases)... and there are one or two things Apple glossed over or didn't mention...

    A FEW UPDATES
I had assumed the Magic Keyboard would work with either Air or Pro... which was a silly assumption given the thickness difference. We realised the keyboards were different when we spotted that the function keys are only on the Pro keyboard, but we should have fixed the segment before editing. 🤦🏼‍♂ Sorry, and thanks to everyone who corrected me.
Something else to confirm is that the new iPad Air and iPad Pro only support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil USB-C. They won't support Apple Pencil 2nd generation. This is due to a change in position of the wireless charging and magnets to accommodate the landscape camera.
I didn't discuss the AI performance of the M4 in this video, because I wanted to do some more research. Apple quoted 38 trillion operations per second (38 TOPS) for the Neural Engine in M4... and they quoted 18 TOPS for M3. That seems like a massive uplift, except that the M4 number is based on INT8 and the M3 number is based on FP16. The actual uplift is more like 5-10% based on information I've seen so far, but we need to see more testing.
Finally, some Geekbench 6 results have been leaked since publishing, and the M4 does look like a healthy step up on M3, though some of that will be due to additional cores. I'll reserve judgement until it's been properly tested, but it's good news for when we get to see these chips in the Mac - perhaps as soon as WWDC!
Thanks for all the comments and support. 😊

      New iPad Pro cons
▫️Apple removed the 2nd rear camera
      🔸Apple removed 1 studio microphone
      🔹Apple Pencil 2 won’t work with it
🔻Existing Magic Keyboard won’t work with it
🔺The M4 chip in the 256 and 512 GB models is a binned whip with lower GPU and performance cores than getting an 1T or 2T model which has the fully unlocked M4 chip.

I have the same model. I'm glad I bought it in 2018 and it's honestly amazing that I've used it as my main drawing device for years. Easily the best device purchase I've made and it is responsible for many of my artworks. That said, lately I've started doing animation with Procreate Dream, and it lags more frequently than I can ignore. If I'm still rocking with Procreate only, I won't need to upgrade but this time I have to say goodbye to my current iPad. It's awesome to see many people still using the model.

I ordered a new 13" iPad Pro and was going to choose nano-texture glass, but then I viewed a review video on Apple Studio monitor which offers the same nano-texture glass. The person said they regret getting the nano-texture because text does not appear as crisp and high resolution as with standard glass. He showed a close up of the blurry, scattered looking text on the nano-texture glass. I am wondering whether the new iPad Pro has this exact same nano-texture glass as on the Studio monitor. Anyway, I changed my order to 'standard glass' because I do a lot of reading on my iPad Pro and crisp clear text is super important. I hope that reviewers will show a close up side-by-side with text on the new OLED screens with both types of glass, and also show both OLED iPads next to the previous iPad Pro mini LED screens for comparison. That would be interesting to see.

matte screen protectors for iphones and ipads have been there for ages. They look and feel different to glossy glass, they look cool, they hide fingerprints and they give paper-like feeling when drawing. But this is personal, so you could spend like 15$ on a matte screen protector (they also call them "paperlike screen protector" for iPads) and try it yourself.

    • @ThomasLeichardt
      @ThomasLeichardt Před 2 měsíci +2

I went to the Apple Store today and compared their matte and glossy studio monitors side by side, and I have the same conclusion. The matte looked blurry and slightly out of focus, enough to be noticed. I compared text and images side by side and the blurring of the matte was a total deal breaker for me. The glossy one looked so much sharper, so it’s glass finish for me for sure! I totally considered the nano-textured glass iPad at first but not anymore. I hope I’m right! 😅

I went for the 13" 1TB myself. Only the 1/2TB models had the option for Nano-glass (not that I want that) and get the 'full' M4 Chip and double the RAM too. I also ordered the new Keyboard and Pencil Pro too.
@transitengineer you could buy older gen options, but you won't get an OLED screen, the front facing camera in the 'right' landscape position, can't use the new 'Pro' pencil which, as an artist/Calligrapher is very appealing, and stuck with the 'old' keyboard without the 'useful' function row and better Track pad. Whilst the older gen iPads are still great and now cheaper, doesn't mean its the right purchase for everyone. If you want the feature set of the new Pencil Pro, you'll need at least an Air but that doesn't have an OLED screen or work with the 'new' Keyboard. Its also heavier too...
It may not be worth it to you, but for others, it could be the 'iPad' they've wanted Apple to make for years and why they didn't upgrade to the M2...

One observation I've seen on some hardware-oriented channels is that the M4 uses a newer and less-expensive manufacturing process than the M3 did. And when it's running, it will use less power than the M3. I believe they did not increase how long a full-charge will last, so it's more likely that they reduced the size of the battery and stayed with the length from battery charge. They certainly couldn't release this new iPad Pro with the *M2* chip, and given the benefits of going with the M4 over the M3 I was pretty confident that they'd go with the M4.

Given your comment regarding lower spec IPads being capable of running DaVinci Resolve. I imagine 8gb RAM might be a potential issue. I run DaVinci on a MacBook Pro (2020) with 16 gb RAM . It’s OK but would I be right in thinking the new iPad air or Pro is not going to offer any advantage in real world use for video editing, or do the M2 and M4 chip make that much difference to justify the cost?

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  Před 2 měsíci +1

Resolve will work fine with 8GB if you're using consumer codecs (or BRAW), even at 4K. Our experience with M chips is that you do start to see slowdown the longer you're working on a timeline, and if you're trying to do anything too complicated. 16GB would make a difference in those scenarios. I've done some quick video edits on iPad, and it works well for that, but for any serious projects I want a Mac or PC.
If your MBP is M1, then it is true to say that the additional encoders and GPU performance in M2 and M4 will perform better, but that would be countered by the limitations of working in iPadOS (file management, interface etc.). And the benefits you do get would mostly be seen in final render times, as the M1 is already quick enough for simple editing.

I do think the M4 makes sense when you think about the fact that the 3nm tech they were using from TSMC was basically exclusive to apple and was basically a ploy for apple to be able to claim to have the first 3nm chips. the newer N3E isn't even compatible with the A17 based M3 line up. I don't think we were ever going to get an M3 Ultra, and this is proven in the teardowns that show the fusion connector was removed from the M3 max. Honestly I think the M3 generation was more for marketing than anything since apple is facing significantly lower sales. That's good for us, their products are so good there's very little reason to upgrade, but bad for apple.

M3 was a temporary stopgap - M4 is what M3 was meant to be, but the yields were awful, so they had to use a different 3nm process to get M3 out of the door. TSMC don't want to keep that M3 3nm process going. This is a more 'true' 3mn chip, which is likely required to make the Pro that thin and light.

I agree with all your comments, other than new Magic Keyboard is only for the M4 iPad Pro. The M2 iPad Air uses the previous magic keyboard version. In fact, the 13-inch M2 iPad Air makes the M4 iPad Pro a complete waste money, because what's the point of having an M4 iPad Pro if its only allowed to run iPad OS, as you can do everything an M4 iPad Pro can do, on an M2 iPad Air, with less of the technically capability wasted. I wouldn't buy another iPad Pro unless Apple offer an iPad OS / Mac OS dual boot option for the 1TB+ models, though this is unlikely (I would even pay an additional one-off licence fee for the Mac OS option). This year's WWDC will help me decide whether I ditch my M1 iPad Pro and replace it with a Microsoft Surface Pro 10 with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or similar (I am extremely comfortable with Windows 11 arm, and it can now do everything I need, and will be even better with a more powerful arm64 processor) or spend more money with Apple and upgrade to an M4 iPad Pro. I suspect it will be the former! Even the new Minisforum V3 14-inch 16:10 Tablet with AMD 7 8840U processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB RAM, 2x USB4 ports eGPU capable, Windows 11 Pro etc and currently costing £1,159.00 for magnesium alloy tablet, keyboard, stand, rechargeable stylus, screen protector and laptop sleeve, is much better value than the iPad Pro, and CZcams reviews to date have been very positive!

As an artist, I have a 1st gen 12.9 iPad Pro and pencil. It's still great for sketches and consumption. I also have a MacBook Pro and a display/pen tablet for the very reason that iPadOS restricts on allowing industry standard apps. The iPad app based file handling alone frustrates me, along with the large phone experience, It's a half way house and not a full solution. If I were to upgrade, I wouldn't get anything more than the new 13" air with the new pro pencil. I think a lot of people agree that the OS is the bottleneck on the top tier iPads for the intention of more serious work. At the moment, they seem to be a little bit in the posh toy consumer zone. With the power performance ratio of Apple Silicon, I do really wish they would make an apple version of the Surface Pro. on a 14"+ scale. This would replace my daily MacBook Pro and pen tablet.

I just upgraded a year ago to the M2 iPad Pro 11", so I'm seriously bummed that the new Pencil Pro won't work with my iPad. The new Pencil Pro offered some features I was interested in, especially since I'm currently using a clone pencil that only has basic function, but works fine at 1/4 the price of Apple's Pencil 2. Also, they should have reduced the price of Pencil 2, given that it now has less features than Pencil Pro (which is the same price). FWIW, I have zero interest in upgrading my M2 iPad Pro to an M4 version.

When Apple's event was done, I was pretty certain that the iPad Pro was significant overkill and that I'd order the 13-inch iPad Air. But after thinking about it some more, and after noticing that my current iPad Pro is the 10.5-inch model, I am now thinking that I'll buy the 11-inch iPad Pro with the 512-GB capacity. I doubt I need more than 256-GB (although I do download videos to my iPad, so I can watch them while traveling), but I've seen some reviews where the reviewer *guesses* that the 256-GB capacity might be slower than the models with more capacity, because they *think* the 256-GB capacity is going to use a single SSD module. They've been clear that this is a guess on their part, but it does pretty plausible to me. And I'm sure I can fill up the extra 256-GB if I really felt I needed to.
_Wrt the magic keyboard:_ What I've done is bought a logitech bluetooth keyboard which can pair up with three separate devices. You switch between the devices by pressing one of three buttons on the keyboard. So I have that paired to my current iPad, my iPhone, and my Apple TV (!). This logitech keyboard isn't cheap, but I think it's a much much better deal than buying the magic keyboard for an iPad. It gives me a lot of the added function of having a keyboard on the iPad, but it's cleaper than the magic keyboard and much more useful. Not as convenient (especially if you're traveling with the iPad), but more generally useful.

On the quick change from M3 to M4, the iMac was one of the first Mx devices to not get the M2, and I hope this is actually true of all the product lines that not everything gets every generation of chip. So if this is true, then the mindset shifts and lessens the blow that MacBook Air with M3 was just released a couple of months ago. It may not get the M4 at all. (And think about those that spent a lot of money on Vision Pro with M2 a few months before MacBook Air w/ M3.) Also, it's more than likely it's two different customers between a MacBook Air and an iPad Air or Pro. You just now have options, and they have trade-offs between them -- ex. MacBook Air has better battery life and MacOS, but iPad has great portability and a touchscreen/pencil-enabled. Nobody needs ALL the devices. You pick and choose what works for you, and what you can afford at that time. Having iPad 10th generation dropping price (with 9th generation ending), is a great entry into the iPad ecosystem, and then in the future you can choose an Air or Pro if needs change.

I have no idea why creators are questioning why Apple went straight to the M4; it seems like a flex to me.

Also I dont understand why people keep comparing the ipad to the mac. it is a portable computing device. But it is not intended to be a software dev tool, its not intended to run macOS. A fanless macOS exists and its called the macbook AIr, and all the limitations of the air is what you would see in macOS on an ipad.
Feeling bad about tech being outdated in 7 months is silly. I have never once bought tech thinking it will be a financial investment. Its almost never the case that used tech past launch date will resell at cost. You lose money immediately. Apple is a company and will continue to make more and better chips and update the lineup incrementally so they can sell you more devices for an eco-system.
Its the best Tablet on the market period. And it does tablet things better than all other tablets. id rather see proper keyboard and mouse support come to the iphone before seeing macOs come to ipadOs in any capacity. This move alone with proper external display from an iphone would decimate macbook and ipad sales.
most people dont need more than their phone, most jobs supply a computer to use for work purposes. People who have side hustles or businesses will buy their own machine for their own work and profit off the work which will offset the cost. The more you pay the better and more powerful device you will have.
Apple's solution. If you need desktop on the cheap then get a mac mini.
if pricing is too much for any device its not for you. Not everyone drives a BMW Mercedes Audi Lexus etc.
cant wait for my 1tb nano 13" ipad pro so i can read outside by the pool this summer. And I can't wait to carry around my 1tb 11" ipad pro m4 around the house for content consumption and facetime calls.
if i need to do real work i sit at my desk and use my machines designed for real work.

Those are my thoughts exactly. The monotony of people complaining that the iPad does not do the stuff they want is boring. It is a tablet with a mobile OS that has been around since day one. Buy a Mac and iPad, and the problem is solved. It is not rocket science, even if the iPad is only a cheaper model or older model.

Hey buddy, you are by for one of the best. Most honest reviewers out there. I appreciate your honesty. Everything you said was spot on. I’m tired of drinking the apple Kool-Aid. They constantly gloss over important info and deceive consumers and the greed is overwhelming. It’s a huge slap in the face we have to upgrade every piece of the puzzle. Greed, greed, greed, and arrogance with Mr. clown leading the pack. I’m sorry I don’t subscribe to their bullshit anymore. Besides new reports of OLED display issues that they’re not mentioning. Anyway, the Internet needs more guys like you being upfront and honest and I thank you for that.

Thanks for the video & get well soon. I think Apple sees the iPad as its flagship consumer 'computer', before the MacBook Air, and sales figures appear to reflect this. It also appears they are targeting the content design/creation market with the iPad Pro & leveraging the tablet form-factor for this - RIP Wacom? Let's see how many 3D design apps get released over the coming years following Maxon Z-Brush & Shapr3D, especially with ray-traced renders now viable. Other tablets may be trying to mimic a desktop GUI but for these targets, iPadOS+Cloud is fine & eliminates traditional OS cruft. But many won't see it that way until it directly emulates the old desktop OS'.
Have you tried to drop your video workflow onto iPad as yet?

I did have a play with Resolve, but for me the limiting factor is always the file management in iPadOS. I would like to experiment some more, but I might need to wait for WWDC to see if they fix anything.

@@ConstantGeekery apparently FCPv2 will allow direct use of external storage now but I'm unsure about Resolve.
Information Mgt in iPadOS definitely needs work but I don't want a lift & shift of desktop file systems. I was hoping it would replace folders with tags (kind of like gmail, unlike SharePoint). If any vendor/device could usher this in, it would be Apple/iPad.
