The Blindman Method of blind cleaning

  • This is the proper way to wash and wax a standard mini-blind, using the method I've used for the last twenty-two years. This video shows a standard aluminum mini-blind. However, this method can also be used with PVC and faux wood blinds. DO NOT use on any natural wood blinds or fabric shades that could be damaged by excessive water.

    I know it looks like I’m being very rough with the blind and bumping the wand around a lot. It’s because I’ve been doing this for a very long time. I’m comfortable handling blinds and know how much abuse they can take without harming them. I have several thousand customers who can tell you that I never damage there blinds. Plus, I also have the parts and the ability to repair them in the off chance I do break one. That said, this video was originally made as a training video for the people who bought my Orange County California operation in 2015. It was not really intended for happy home owners who want to clean their own blinds. Non-professionals would be wise to take extra care if they attempt this on their own.

      Whatyoudo, I’m not personally in the blind cleaning business anymore. I originally made this as a training video for the employees of the company that bought me out. It took on a life of its own after that. However, even if I was still in the business, I have no problem educating people on how to do something for themselves. There is plenty of work for clients who don’t do these types of chores themselves to keep professional blind cleaning businesses busy.

    • @DennisOnMaui
      @DennisOnMaui  Před 6 lety +3

      Nathan Hill, actually those wash boards are from an experimental portable blind cleaning system I was working on. I built them from 2x2’s and 1/4” plywood with several coats of premium exterior house paint. Any large flat vertical surface should work fine though. I’m not cleaning blinds professional anymore. But, recently I washed some blinds for a friend. I screwed a couple of angle irons to the side of the house...instant blind washing surface. Finding a place to dry them took a little more creativity.

    Great job 👏. Although with this technique even though you do both sides, there that fine line where the blinds over lap. Leaving a line still that gets missed. I still have to lay it flat & go over individually to remove that over lapped line. Takes forever! Does yours still have that over flapped line?

    Hope this helps someone. I take it outside and hang it up someway like this guy did and spray 'scrubbing bubbles' on it and after about 3 minutes I spray it off. Then get a 3" to 4" PVC pipe and cut it to length you want and glue and cap one end - stick your blind in there and fill it with bleach and water and lean it up against something for 24 hrs, take it out and rinse. My blinds are white though and not colored.

    • @DennisOnMaui
      @DennisOnMaui  Před rokem

      That might get your blinds clean, but you’ll ruin them in the process using such harsh chemicals. Total overkill. You also probably took several years off the life of those blinds you washed with that method. Plus you wasted a lot of money using bathroom cleaner when a simple degreaser will do. For better results, use car wash/wax solution.

      @@donutdude6258 Wow! 20 years! You wasted a lot of money on overkill and doing it the hard way. But, you do you brother.
      My 30 years of professional blind cleaning experience suggest that people don’t use Scrubbing Bubbles or bleach on their blinds. Diluted Simple Green, 409 or any commercial grade cleaner degreaser will do the trick. Automotive wash/wax solution works the best, because it leaves a nice finish. The main thing is to rinse them thoroughly..

    Brush is just an ultra soft car wash brush. You want to always brush or wipe in one direction. Otherwise you are just moving contaminants around and rubbing them in.

    • @DennisOnMaui
      @DennisOnMaui  Před 6 lety +3

      Casey Cross, totally unnecessary to brush in only one direction. The dirt comes of best with some agitation. A good rise should send all the dirt and "contaminants" down the drain.

      denthemen92629 for people that want to get things clean wipe in one direction. For those that don’t believe next time you take a shit wipe your ass back and forth, and let us know how that works out. Also would be good practice to spend 5 seconds to remove the tilt wand.

      You are correct. I mention at the beginning that this method is only good for metal or plastic blind that won’t be harmed by water. For wood blinds and shutters I recommend that you hand clean each vain with a product like Murphy’s Oil Soap.

      Those things are great for keeping all types of blinds clean, but will not cut through built up grim like the Oil Soap will. And, it won’t leave them smelling as nice. Another bonus with Murphy’s is that you don’t need to rinse it off. Just wipe each slat clean and let it dry. Then use your new micro duster weekly to keep them clean.

      @@DennisOnMaui - Yeah I reckon you're right. In the past I have hung my blinds in the garage from a 2 x 4 that I have attached to my car hoist. - It allows me to raise the hoist up to drop them the entire length. I've then gone over them with compressed air and then a damp rag. I'm in Australia so not sure which product will have the active ingredient of the Murphy’s Oil Soap you mentioned but I'll keep an eye out for it. Cheers.
