Apologies for the crappy sound. I'm a total idiot who forgot to press a button.

7:00 ''It's just noise'' Thats mainly because you dont understand the language, so it can just sound like random noises, but also because the singing tends to be loud enough that phone cameras cannot capture it properly. In the US you just sing along to some generic pop song, a catchy beat or two easy to remember lyrics, so if youre watching a video its easy to understand. In Europe you have to understand the culture and history behind it to fully grasp whats happening.

So the story goes - during one the first meetings between FIFA & the US organisation responsible for staging the '94 USA World Cup the Americans were explaining how during the games the TV Director would signal the Referee to stop the game for the Ad breaks. The FIFA representatives looked at one another & then told the Americans it was very nice meeting with them but they had decided to go in a different direction & would now be talking to the South American Federations about how they would go about staging the World Cup down there, possibly sharing it between a couple of countries.
Make it all about the money & you will kill it stone dead. The US model for sport must be resisted at all costs - we have gone too far down that road already.

As football fan, it's indoctrinated into us, it's a sense of our being, our identity. While American sports, which i happen to enjoy, i feel are more there for entertainment purposes only. I think that's why our body rejects the the term 'franchise', the idea our passion can be transferred and replicated in some meaningless place. Whereas US Sports go by the mantra of 'build it and they'll come', erm no we won't. That's why i've watched American sports for years and i don't have support any team, there's just no affiliation there. While as an Arsenal fan, i have a bond with fellow Arsenal fans in Uganda, Malaysia, Peru...etc whatever part of the world as we're a part of history and traditions. The Super Bowl is an event, the crowning of the overall champion, but it's hard to be really passionate about that game if your team isn't playing. So, unless you are watching the Super Bowl with fans of one of the teams playing, it's not gonna have that feel to it. Also, because it's become such an event, they try to get everyone into to it, so they have the big name performer at half-time, and all the creative ads, so even more casual fans than usual will be watching. Now, find some fans of the team where you live, and watch a division rivalry game together and you will see that passion.

In the rest of the world that is into sports, the sport comes first and the advertising, marketing and money are made as a result of the sport. Hello from Germany, there is a reason why I have seen so many comments from the US that the NFL game in Munich / Germany had the best atmosphere the NFL has ever seen or at least for a while. In soccer for example people are organised in fan clubs. Like Fen said it ruins your day if your team loses. Often the whole family is involved in the fan club. By the way there is a huge Seahawks fan club in Germany. NFL is getting bigger in Germany and Europe, but you will see a different fan culture.
Unfortunately, many fans of the major leagues NFL, NBA and MLB are very boring and somewhat sedate. And yes, probably because of what Fen said. Personally, I like the audience in college sports much better. I like it when the fans sing "I Won't back down" at the Florida Gators or "Dixieland Delight" in Alabama or "Mr. Brightside" in Michigan. If I'm honest, I've seen better atmosphere in women's gymnastics in college sports than in the major leagues. Soccer and MLS is a little different. With some clubs you notice a European influence in the fan culture, like FC Cincinnati or Detroit City FC, even though Detroit is not part of MLS. Detroit reminds a lot of the German club FC. St. Pauli from Hamburg / Germany. No wonder these clubs had a friendly match in the past.

American sports are manufactured entertainment (timeouts & stopping the clock) with little real jeopardy ( closed leagues). Like I can't fathom how teams can just decide to tank the season so they can benefit in the future. So it's a bit fake and therefore doesn't (in my opinion) tap into the hearts of people generally. The fan and players have very little power (contracts can be traded on the owners whim) and so it won't have the mass appeal. I'm non-American just for transparency

    • @TheSloppyjoejr
      @TheSloppyjoejr Před rokem +1

      1. I agree with you, I like relegation and promotion systems and I wish we had that here in the US.
      2. Teams cannot just “tank” as easy as you think they can. You need everyone to go along with it and that won’t resonate well with the fans, coaches, and players. The coaches and players are paid to win so anything else is reason to get fired.
      3. Owners cannot directly sign free agents. Multiple people like the GM and President have to sign on it.
      4. The fans not having a say is not a problem for me. I am Green Bay Packer fan, the only American franchise to be 100% owned by the fans like me who are members

    • @cjboyer4355
      @cjboyer4355 Před rokem

Like the other guy said it’s not as easy to tank as you think. The average NFL players career is 3-4 years because every year 300-400 college players are drafted so that’s potentially 300-400 new guys losing their jobs since only 53 guys can be on a team so the older players are fighting their ass off to play well so they can find a new team next year or not get cut by their current team. Some guys will get signed by new teams after they’ve been replaced but most will have to retire.

But when we won the carling cup in 04 all the geordies were saying “calm down it’s a Mickey Mouse cup” and when Sunderland got to the final in 2014 they said the same thing to them. Now newcastle are in the final they are acting like it’s the World Cup final. So best of luck in the “Mickey mouse cup”

im sunderland, mentioned in another video,
maybe if yu replayed just the passion between 2 clubs, the derby matches
we can all work together during the week, friends
but dont wear newcastle shirt sunderland and vis versa
it a culture, live and work together
but we also have respect for all noth east, if we cant win the cup or the league, derby match aside
we support, those teams, if we cant win, as long as the north east wins

The issue with pro teams is that they move city’s occasionally especially the coastal teams. The teams in the middle of the country have stronger fan bases and usually stay put in those city’s.

First of all, well, welcome back to the Champions League for the Toons, I've lived there for a short time, been for a couple of games when they were in the Championship, really football passionate city, unfortunately left before these good times they have now, would have been great to be there at the first game in the groups. Omg I speak to much.
Secondly, nope, you don't have only brits and amercian audience, I'm the proof 😅, btw you both are very funny, I like Fan's type of humor. About the hate, when speaking facts and the truth it's always a good hate to take.

Also, there is a really nice video about the atmosphere from diff places in Europe named Our Way of Life.

11:04 our sports are not just big here basketball is huge in China and is pretty big in Europe ironically two of the videos in this compilation were of euro league basketball not soccer. I’d argue basketball is pretty big in southern and Eastern Europe just not in the UK for whatever reason. Baseball is massive in Japan, Korea, and all of Central America. American football is not that popular I agree but it’s growing in Germany but still. I think that’s because you need schools to invest in our football to buy all the equipment and why would they do that when they could just play Rugby and save thousands of dollars on equipment. Soccer is massive because it’s the cheapest sport to play all you need is a ball and you can turn basically anything into a goal.

    • @ariannatrapani5824

Football, not soccer, could be the cheapest but that's not a bad thing by any means, otherwise the king of sports would be the most expensive one, Formula 1. It's massive in Europe and South America because has a huge history. Almost all the mayor club are at least 100yo ( most are around 130 and in the Uk even 150 yo) and big significance for cities and nations history. It's massive in the rest of the world (Africa and Asia) because is a beautiful, intricate and exciting game that anyone can play in the streets.
You just don't get it: children and teenager don't play in schools or colleges in Europe. All the teams have their own schools for the game, but every local/private sport club can have its team, and in Italy even church have their fields.
Besides it can be very, very expensive to manage a football team at the top level.

@@ariannatrapani5824 1. I’m not gonna argue about the name where I live it’s known as soccer not football you know what sport I’m referring to.
      2. I didn’t say it’s a bad thing that soccer is cheap but I do believe that is why it’s so popular world wide…that and English colonization but that’s another topic for another day.
      3. I’m well aware of the history of soccer I’m a casual fan of Liverpool and follow the Premiere League. I’m not saying it’s a crap sport but I for sure prefer American football and basketball over it.

    Champions Lesgue final 400m
    World Cup final 1.1b

This is a pretty big misconception amongst people, usually football fans, outside of the US that only think of American sports as the NFL or NBA. You obviously don’t know about the tribalism of college sports in the US, and how they predate the NFL and even some English football clubs, and to be fair, I don’t know why someone outside the US would know about it as it’s not pushed out, but it is frustrating when people speak on sports in American and leave out what is actually the biggest sport section in the US: college athletics. Not only are the college teams older than pro, bring in more money than most pro sports. The biggest stadiums in the US, and many of the biggest stadiums in the world, are all college football stadiums. College teams never move, and have generations of fans and families going back 100s of years. Wealthy people make donations worth hundreds of millions to universities just for college athletics. It’s huge.
Also, professional baseball is as old as professional English football, but that’s an aside.

You were talking about the Super Bowl specifically, and that is a unique situation. There are definitely folks there who love it because they love the game for what it is, but at the same time you have to realize that there are now only 2 teams remaining, out of 32 teams, and the fans of the other teams may not be as pumped about the game as they would be in other situations. Hand-swining thing is "tomahawk chop", makes me cringe all the time, very close to being a racist, cringe-worthy situation.
