      I was with you UNTIL the rope 🤮...why not get the disgarded metal banding that goes on pallets , measure,drill and rivet ?...that would give it the real McCoy look. 👍..I'm going to skip the stain ,as real barrels are never stained...maybe oil. ?...😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    As a professional tablesaw operator for many trophy shops in the Midwest for over 30 years, I feel I need to give you some pointers. The best cut on the tablesaw is one that never stops till it clears the blade. The best advice in a construction shop is to 1st build a cutoff table for the tablesaw (that will greatly increase the accuracy of your cuts allowing you to fully cut any piece) and could possibly have lock wheels to move it when you need more space in the shop for bigger projects. Nice job on the barrel. Interesting techniques you use but it all works out in the end when you have a finished product. Keep building. You have a good future in that.
    And thanks for sharing

    • @glennkrzeminski7539
      @glennkrzeminski7539 Před 2 lety +2

      I know you have the splitter installed, which is good because your habit of pushing on the scrap side of a rip is a terrible habit to get into. That piece should fall free and you should push the business side completely through like the above mentioned said. Even with the splitter installed a harder wood might have kicked back. Even if your splitter is exactly the same thickness, and perfectly aligned, sometimes wood under tension, and yours was pretty well warped at the start, will spring free once released because of the cut, and bind.

    Very cool project! A tip I picked up when it comes to applying my finish coats of poly is too get a generous amount on the brush, and apply the poly in one long stroke, applying more pressure the farther into the stroke you get, that way more poly comes off and you get on nice even coat. If you miss a spot just get it during the next coat of finish, just make sure that there’s no high spots.
    I didn’t think it would matter that much but it took my projects to the next level :)

    First off, very nice work.
    Second, I would advise you to never depend on your other hand to free hold a workpiece when using a Forstner bit in a portable drill. Used free hand, Forstner bits can catch, either spinning the workpiece or, worse, jumping out of the hole to seek out your other hand. I learned this the hard way, having broken the bone under my then-missing fingernail the last time I tried this. Now I try to use the drill press whenever possible and, when not, I clamp the workpiece down and keep my non-drill hand far away from the workpiece.

    Josh, this is an awesome idea. I just read through the comments and want to tell you that all of us woodworkers have done some (a lot of) unsafe things. Don't be discouraged by all the commenters who feel the need to prove to the internet that they know woodworking by their ability to find faults with your performance. "The young man just did something I'm not sure I could do, better criticize him to prove that I am better than him." Work safe. Be careful. I'm not ignoring the importance of safety. Just saying, don't mind the critics. The problem is with them, not you.

Keep up the great work but be very careful with that tablesaw. You have a few bad habits the can cause an accident (knock on wood). Some advice for you... 1. Make a sacrificial fence for those thin cuts. 2. Make yourself a zero gauge throat plate to prevent the off-cuts from going inside and causing some damage (trust me, I know) i got one to the face, good thing for PPE, still hurt tho. 3. Secure your table saw properly and 4. Build yourself an outfield/assembly table so you don't damage your table saw top with glue. But keep building, all you can do is keep learning and you'll be a great woodworker in no time...

    Make more push sticks for that table saw. using 2 and/or a feather board at least would save you a stomach injury or a finger. I saw a couple spots you could have some wicked kickback right into you. That's the reason I tend to stand on one side of my work, not directly behind it. Great work! just be careful so can keep working.
