actually in the half life 2 folder is only the source engine itself, the actual assets for hl2 are inside the hl2 subfolder 🤓
it's also like this for goldsrc, where valve is inside the hl folder
don't know about source 2 though as i dont have vr or cs2

also this isn't the entire engine folder, only the executable (also this is why so many source game are detected as others if you've ever tried using discord rich presence or something similar)

The icons are actually a part of regular windows executables, usually stored in several different sizes (32x32, 64x64, 128x128 etc.) and stored as bitmaps, that's why it's possible to see them in raw data.

@@logitchy my guess is that they either get added during compliation (unlikely) or get stored in the file metadata (which is still part of the file's data) after compilation. they're definitely not being "coded in", though.
@@MrD34DM4U5 im mostly uneducated in exe compilation, since i have more experience in other things about computers. i think its the ico file encoding itself into the raw data/binary
@@logitchy well "raw" could mean a lot of things. since a program is made of data, one could say the whole file from beginning to end including metadata/digital signatures is the "raw data". you could also say that the raw data is only the machine code.
the icon is clearly embedded into the exe though. you can embed jpgs into .mp3 files so i guess it works in a similar way

the best part is that they also work like any other sound, so they get applied room reverberation and underwater muffling

I love this kind of thing. When I was a kid I put the Quake 2 CD in the hifi and discovered that the in game music was like a regular music CD so I tried it with another disc and it sounded super strange. I listened to all the game CD's I could find to try and figure out if I'd hear a pattern or something. I also snipped the end off of a VGA connector and put the wires on my tongue to check if I could identify colours by the way it made my tounge tingle. Unfortunately all colours tingle/taste the same in VGA.
I listen to this at night so I can play my favorite gmod 24/7

a while ago i opened windows 98 in audacity (kind of unrelated to the premise of this video) and found the startup sound in there. i felt so smart.
I imagine this is what computers see, and their job is to remember the color of every pixel on every frame, and the audio value on every frame too, and they have to work with the whole thing as well to render and update the game every few milliseconds...
