Unpopular Opinion: I preferred Kate and Anthony over Simon and Daphne, since I felt as though they had more chemistry, plus I enjoy "Enemies to Lovers" over "Fake Relationship inevitably becomes real" trope.

I agree the chemistry between characters is better in season two but… when Simon and Daphne go to get ice cream and he licked the spoon, that was something else. Or the scene where they’re in library and Simon is uh… performing a certain service while Daphne is on the ladder. Like I literally wanted to be Daphne in that moment. But I may be biased given my lifelong obsession with old libraries. I’d live in a Victorian or regency library if I could.

It's always a real sign of true love when a person prefers your real name, all the extra syllables and everything, to some nickname that the rest of the world calls you.
"I'll never call her Kat. She's Ykaterin. I long to linger over every syllable, and draw the name out in my mouth as long as possible." I mean, come on. If that's not love, what is, right?
Of course, it's also a sign that, while the rest of the world sees the mask (and the nickname), YOU see "the real person behind the mask" (or the original, but disused, name).

This season was so low on nudity but was so high on "wanting". It was more like a cataclysmic war of emotions and duties. It felt more relatable to us first-borns of our families coz we often grow up not just to be the parent of our sibling, but also end up being a care-taker of our parents. It often conflicts our own identity and our own needs. Many of us sacrifice our needs and desires, our dreams and aspirations all in the name of responsibility. Kate's character is so close to my heart. I could feel myself taking every decision she took and I honestly would have done the same. It was also scandalous to think that we could keep ourselves over other people. So I felt really connected to Kate. I don't know what a real life Anthony would be like for me.... Maybe he is one of the most toxic fictional heores that women love to romanticize. I really wanted to know how you see him- a good guy with bad temper or a big time jerk. Coz dudes like Anthony are like Romantic junk food. Not sure whether we should be tempted to them or should we look for someone rather simple....
Honestly, Kate feeling overshadowed by her sister's beauty is a very real feeling that a lot of girls face. Its extremely tempting to be drawn to a guy who chooses us over a pretty sister or friend. So I was expecting a more detailed version of this one. But whatever suits you..

I found it entertaining (and Georges' storyline was heartbreaking), but romance-wise it wasn't up to par. I kind of like the idea that you can have romance with only minimal s*x. Hopefully we get a bit more of that in S3, though I doubt it.

This season proved really important to me. Im not usually into romance novels, but I love Kate and Anthony's story so much that I read the book while homebound due to Covid. Anthony's determination that he would not outlive his father was like a lightbulb moment for me, making me realise why I was struggling with the fact that I was going to be dad. My dad is thankfully still alive, but he did leave me and my mum for someone else - and I realised I was worried I'd do the same; like Anthony I was unable to concieve of surpassing my father in any way. It was the spur I needed to get myself into therapy to talk about it. Sadly, not long after my therapist helped me work through it all, my wife miscarried. But im still glad that when we try again, I'll be in a better position to handle the impending responsibilities, all thanks to seeing myself in a man from a Regency-era romance story.

Plus I always perceived Daphne as pretty toxic. Like the way she raped Simon for a chance to become pregnant and then behaving as if *he* did something wrong and *he* needed to come around and change and it's never really addressed that she violated him. Like yes, he could have communicated more clearly, and yes, it is problematic to let your dead father have such a hold on you so that you forbid yourself to have children just to spite your dead relative instead of shaping your own future and making your family into something he would have never approved of, but that is not something that's equally as bad as raping someone who doesn't want children. And it really gives me the ick how the showrunners did not comment clearly enough on how wrong that was within the show and that they basically rewarded Daphne with Simon eventually coming around and giving her what she wanted. Like that made it really difficult for me to root for the both of them.

Anthony was absolutely positive that he will die at the same age that his father died. It was a knowledge he carried with himself ever since he witnessed his death. Hence complete rejection of love - if he loves, or if he is loved, it will cause so much pain and suffering, that it would be better to cease any chance at it. Hence his issue with Kate and his courtship with her sister.
In the books tho, Edwina sees right through him. And in the books, when he did get married to Kate (because of a bee, they were too close and were seen), that's where the real magic started. He would try to stay away from home even though he missed her terribly, and when they were in public, people were convinced it's a love match, because of how he looked at her. It was beautiful. It was him who said "I burn for you" in the books to Kate.
I do wish they took more from the books. It was my favorite.

What I find interesting about the Bridgerton series of books (have only seen isolated clips of the series, but it is inescapable these days) is how Julia Quinn is very consciously subverting the central tension of Jane Austen's novels: what happens to young women of good families if their fathers/older brothers don't prepare properly for their daughters'/sisters' futures. Anthony is also a subversion of the cliche' of the scion of an aristocratic family as an entitled, spoiled, rather louche rake who is caught up in exercising his privilege rather than taking care of his responsibilities to his family/title/estate/ and wider community. Anthony can seem overbearing and obnoxious to modern eyes, especially in regards to the fates/reputations of his sisters. He became the Viscount as a very young adult, has never allowed himself to grieve, and the weight of his responsibilities crush him at times. He also is indulging in some magical thinking about his own imminent demise, which is probably linked to his grief for the early, tragic death of his father. He can come off as humorless, but he is very responsible, and also very generous (also a subversion of a Jane Austen trope of older brothers of the heroines being stingy). I quite like him, actually.
Jonathan, if you haven't read any of Jane Austen's novels, I hope you do. I think you would really enjoy them. Austen's characters are so vivid and relatable, and she has a razor-sharp wit about the manners and mores of her time (and really, ours as well).
I don't know if you were joking when you wondered aloud what men of that era did for exercise, but upper-class men of that era lived very outdoor lives. They grew up learning to ride, shoot, and hunt, and continued those pursuits throughout their lives (sometimes to the exclusion of actually managing their estates, to their families' chagrin). They also learned to fence, and sometimes box, and along with their sisters, would have had lessons from a dancing master from a young age, since dances were rather elaborate line-dance or promenade types, for the most part. The waltz (which we see some in Bridgerton) wasn't introduced in England until around 1812. Knowing how to dance properly was an important marker of class for men as well as women, so several hours a week would have been dedicated to learning the popular and traditional dances of the day. Altogether, that's a lot of exercise. Once the boys went off to boarding school at around 13, or Oxford/Cambridge at age16-18 there were always more sports (they had to channel all that energy and testosterone somehow), although I'm not sure exactly what, as sports like rugby, soccer/football or field hockey weren't invented until later in the 19th century.

Of course, if the nephew Queen Charlotte mentioned to Edwina was Prince Friedrich from season 1 and if Edwina ends up marrying him (they're both sweethearts, I think they'd be very happy together) then as a princess she'll be in an even better position to introduce Indian tea into society.

I can answer the fitness question. In London, in particular, there were a couple of notable fencing and boxing clubs. Riding is also a form of exercise at which Anthony, apparently, excels. He is often seen engaging in outdoor activities like hunting, riding, playing whatever that game was, etc, which might imply that he is of the Corinthian set and hung about with other sportsmen (often betting on each other's performance in a given arena). They actually had some really dangerous races and even had these things called velocipedes that were akin to bicycles and lacked breaks. At night, of course, they spend a lot of time dancing. And, not to be weird, but there was basically a Zagat's guide to, uh, houses of ill repute that circulated in the late 1700s/early 1800s, and it was as important, socially, to be seen in some of those places as it was to be seen at Almack's or White's (Hariette Wilson's house comes to mind). So, lacking an actual job apart from the running of the family estates, Anthony, specifically, seems likely to spend quite a lot of his leisure time (of which he has an abundance) engaged in sports and other active pursuits.
Admittedly, much of his activities seem related to cardio. So where does he get his "guns?" Well, perhaps it is the guns! Have you ever held a muzzle-loader? They're incredibly heavy. The boxing and hunting probably give him some decent muscle definition in the arms. Fencing is really hard on the knees, but that and riding would give him those calves all the guys wanted back then. And generous cardio to keep him trim. Of course, he also had access to lots of amazing food and drank like a fish, so I feel like those would have balanced out to a less trim physique.

I think it's a bit more complex than this. For Anthony, duty is a complicated thing. This is a man who loves his family dearly but resents that he had to do this job long before he was ready. He often takes that resentment out on his siblings, who he sees as getting to choose their own paths, not realizing that that really isn't the case. All of them have roles they are expected to fulfill to not be seen as blight on their family. Then, he saw what love did to his mother, and the deep down person became afraid of what it would do to him. That's the underlying reason as to why he's trying to find a woman that he knows he won't love. He says it's about duty and status, but really, it's to protect himself from the incredible pain it put his mother through and the woman from pain that he could inflict with his passing.
The problem is that Anthony really does want love. and he's created these relationships (Siena) where he can imagine he has, it but he can turn it off at any time and not really be affected. Siena, however, makes him realize that in doing so he's involving another person who is getting hurt in the end. That's why we see him turning to prostitutes in the beginning of S2 because he can imagine all he wants with these women and not be concerned about hurting them. He also begins to double down on his duty because he thinks this is all he has and can have. That doesn't mean that the resentment isn't still there. Throw in a smattering of self loathing because he feels like a jerk for how he treats his family and how he treated Siena, and then this notion that he will never be as good as his father and you have one seriously messed up individual.
For Kate, it isn't just that she feels a duty because she's the oldest in the family and at the time was in the best position to step in. It's also about what she feels she owes Mary and by proxy Edwina. In fact, she feels so indebted to them that she feels that she has to sacrifice the things that she really wants in life to help them. The fact that Mary, who came from a higher social class than she had and treated no different than she had Edwina, meant a great deal to her.

Thank you for this video. I have met a lot of people who talk about their relationships and say things like: "The one who loves more always has less power." And yes, if there is a great power imbalance in a relationship, it can be problematic. But here you talk about humility and that is beautiful.
I also have some suggestions on videos, I hope that is okay:
Gilmore Girls gets therapized: You could take a look at mother-daughter relationships, friendships and romantic relations. There are a lot of all them. It has a lot of episodes and I understand if it too much, but I believe there is some interesting stuff in there, especially because you can watch certain characters evolve over years, which might be a bit closer to reality than a complete turnaround in a couple of weeks or months.

I'd be curious to see some 90s and 00s relationships therapies. I know you like Buffy so Willow and Tara. But also the evolution of Felicity/Noel/Ben in Felicity. There's also a British show Press Gang and the Lynda/Spike dynamic is electric. But Lynda on her own as a study in ambition versus romantic passion was and is fascinating to me. As a teen seeing a young woman put her career before a guy was very wholesome (even though she had some unpleasant behaviours). There's a clip of her character being interviewed on a show call Crazy Stuff which is standalone and iconic.

I've been told that actors use breath mints as a courtesy to their cast mates. Which is probably obvious to most of us, but I've also heard that they will eat garlic or something equally offensive when they aren't particularly fond of their acting partner. Other times it's only done as a practical joke. Perhaps to break the awkwardness of the situation. Your commentary during the more passionate scenes really cracked me up. So, I thought I'd share my little tidbit of knowledge on the subject.😄

What did they do for fitness in regency era England. Most likely swordsmanship. If the men served in the military they would likely have used the sabre in the cavalry or the cutlass in the navy. Another possibility is the broadsword. Noblemen also carried rapiers as their dress sword, but if they practiced with the rapier or used it for illegal duels varied between individuals.

If you watched Season 1, I'm interested in seeing you compare Anthony's relationship with Siena to his relationship with Kate.
This is just my personal take, but Anthony's relationship with Siena was based on escapism, the selfish desire to throw away all responsibilities to be with her.
Kate challenges and constantly competes with Anthony. And yet they're also birds of a feather, as they both protect their younger siblings and think that they have to adhere to duty before they can earn their own happiness. But they find it with each other.
