  • Having admired it from afar for 16 years, I'm delighted to announce that a 1998 Renault Mégane Coupé Sport II 1.6e has joined the PetrolBlog fleet. This is a brief(ish) look at the car before work begins.

    Out of the four colours that was offered in the brochure, the yellow really suit this car. The shape of the car stand out. Love the rear lights cluster on this. Well done for saving this forgotten beauty.🌻

      It had to be Sunflower Yellow for me, although beggars can't be choosers when it comes to the Mk1 Mégane.

    Man, I saw the same one in my home town, just resting in some random field. Like noone owns it or drives it for that matter. Yellow just like this one, coupe just like this one. Always loved that combo in Megane MK1.

    The temperature display on mine is also a bit optimistic. 😅 That's as far back as the sunroof goes.
    My Fidji was the first special edition in 97 (the pre facelift cars ran 96-99 in the UK). Based on the 1.6e. the sport and sport 2 came later. Mine has twin headlights where as yours has singles but you get the painted mirror backs, opening rear windows, ABS, white dials, CD player and leather/sportex upholstery which mine doesn't have.
    Don't be fooled by how tidy my car looks on camera. It also needs repainting and many dents removing.
    Thanks for the shout-out and great update. I'd love to get the two cars side by side at some point.
    If you need to compare notes on anything just drop me a message as they are fundamentally the sane car underneath.

    Can I just say, now I have finished watching this video, just how confident you're coming across behind the camera, it's clear you are passionate about this and I can see why. Of course, now I know a Clio Williams that isn't a Clio Williams exists, I want one dearly, but are these 1.6s underrated engines? I do like that interior, very smart. Looking forward to seeing where this goes, a Renault in Renault Yellow is always a good thing

  • @goncaloterrivel1

    Beautiful Megane Coupé! Problem with the speedo could be the sensor fitted in the gear box that gives the speed reading. Very cheap even OEM. ABS fault could be a faulty sensor most probably because of corrosion. Also you have no light in the little display that shows mileage. Beware if you change the cluster the mileage will be the one registered in a new one. I think the best route to go is to have the original repaired. Also should hook it to a code scanner to see which error codes are present. Rear windows on those are a nightmare...most probably the regulators are gone due to age and being French (looool)! Nevertheless it's in great condition!! Congrats!

    Renault dealer names were odd like that - one example of a odd Renault dealer name (now closed and replaced by Nissan, kia and MG) was called Renault London East (because Renault ilford was too simple and not French enough)

    This Megane a very nice, original example. Only 5 1998 1.6 Coupes remaining, all on SORN, if HML is to be believed. I hardly ever see these now, even the mk1 Scenic is thin on the ground now. @0:45 to 0:50 Oops! I did it again, from early 2000 when this Megane was worth about £10495 on the forecourt! Sadly the £100 (or was it £110, because of the sticker?) Laguna really is off the system now, local-to-Devon reg number as well (A.J. Blackler maybe?). Still, we did have a lot of fun with it, using it as an A-road repmobile, counting the working door-lights, and enjoying a certain 1993 smash hit by Haddaway. The Megane's angle when you pause this video @3:40, looks like a '90s What Car? Group Test front cover-shot next to the VR6! I can imagine the slogan, 'Look out Corrado, the new Megane Coupe is finally here!' Also, I have never seen so much body rot on ANY Renault, never mind that white Laguna mk1 estate @12:00, sacre bleu! It's a facelift as well, so makes me wonder how young it was when the first sign of all this rust started to show.

    At least it has a boot. Not a bad boot for a coupe at all really. Some coupes did not. Also I think the cover is missing on the engine and the reason there is so much room is the air con unit is not in it.

    • @Petrolblog
      @Petrolblog  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, the boot is a good size. It's surprising how much you can cram in. Same with the Cabriolet.

    Hey nothing wrong with the 1.6litre engine. We had had it in a 1997 Megane Classic and it was very revvy and nippy.
    Can't believe it only has one airbag. Our Megane Classic had two airbags.

    • @Petrolblog
      @Petrolblog  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, I'm not criticising the engine. It's just that finding a Mégane Coupé with the 2.0-litre engine would be amazing.
