Ps. One thing I didn't see mentioned in this video. I recall Rogerio Ceni being the first goalkeeper who could also play the sweeper when the team didn't have the ball. A curiosity: the coach who gave Ceni the opportunity to hit the first foul, did it as a "punishment" for the other players who refused to practice. "What are you laughing at? He's the goalkeeper who trains!" - was the phrase he used when announcing the decision to the team.
On his being an unknown athlete: Although he had a great work ethic, Ceni has always been a very private man, considered grouchy, complaining and perfectionist on an almost toxic level. He never cared about pleasing the fans, becoming famous or being friendly with the media... his main objective was to bring practical results and honor the São Paulo shirt.

He was decisive in winning the clubs World Cup against Liverpool, which had just made a phenomenal campaign and won the UCL. He was part of the Brazilian squad who won the World Cup in 2002. I have been following football since the early 90s, and I say without a shadow of a doubt: Rogério Ceni was one of the top 3 goalkeepers I have ever seen play. And the other two obviously were not capable of doing many of the incredible things he did.
He was complete. Excellent as a goalkeeper in all the fundamentals that the position demands, a beast as a free-kick and penalty taker, and a playmaker (he provided 7 direct assists for goals, not to mention the chances that the attackers wasted). He also greatly helped the team in building up play from the back with great efficiency.
He was also a great leader and a role model both on and off the field. He was greatly underrated throughout his career, of the limited opportunities he had with the Brazilian national team and never being seriously approached by top European clubs. In my opinion, this does not diminish the great football player he was.
It would be only fair if FIFA awarded him some honorary award for everything he has done for the sport.
I dare say that if it weren't for him, we wouldn't have witnessed the great revolution in the goalkeeper position that we saw with Neuer, for example, where the goalkeeper became important as a player who helps with their feet and plays in a more advanced position on the field.
*He is the greatest idol of goalkeeper Ederson, to name just one.

For anyone wondering how such a keeper wasn't a staple at the NT, apart from what was mentioned on the video, Ceni also had heavily competition with Marcos and Dida, who were also at their prime at the time. Also, Brazil had a lot of great FK takers at the time, like Juninho, Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos, so his FK ability was never really considered when coaches went to call up players for the NT. And lastly, he was considered by some pundits as just a mediocre keeper who can score goals, which is far from true, but mined the mind of a lot of people at the time.
