    I have a Belgian Draft. He’s the same size as the ones shown in the video. They are very placid, caring and loving horses. They are also extremely powerful. The pulling on the bit is not needed, reassurance would of been better from the handler. They look highly anxious and he obviously spooked at the end.

      @@kelseyplagman2570, these are 4 year olds. It is even in the video and also in the description. The chain does not go though the mouth, but under the chin and though the rings of the bit. Something you can also see in de video. They have a bit in their mouth and yanking it like that hurts.
      The chain also hurts. The chain is something we call "hengstenketting" (stallion chain)
      This is a way to control a stallion. This last man is clearly afraid of his own horse.
      Even though the are strong, this yanking is not necessary. You don't know what you are talking about. Doesn't hurt? It hurts like hell. Maybe you should go to these shows sometimes and work with these horses, so you learn something.

      @@NienkeJoe I've worked with drafts all my life and have gone to many shows, I never showed because we didn't use ours for shows. The stallion chain, bit chain, control chain, people call it didnt things can go over the nose, under the chin(but it's not effective) and most commonly, through the mouth, under the top lip across the gum or through the mouth across the tongue. They're using the last method. These chains aren't built like regular chains, they're smooth and flat, to avoid pinching or abrasion, and cause much less pressure than a bit. And since the amount of pressure is given on an equal surface, the amount of force it would take to hurt is a lot. Much more than the yanking on the video. The horse's head barely moves during the yanks.

      The tail is docced so it won't be ripped off (literally) or get stuck in the pulling tack. It's not for looks, just for safety. The tail (as in the bony structure) isn't longer than 40-50cm by nature.
      This is just like with cattle dogs like the Australian shephard. Often farmers would rather doc the tail than to have to risk their dog being trampled by the herd of cattle and bulls because one of then stepped on the tail.

    It really hurts to see this as someone who grew up on a stud farm with shows like that. If you want a nice and clean show run, never ever hold the horse so close to you, it needs space to be able to show a proper run and pulling on the mouth like that is just an absolute no go. You’ll just make the horse aggressiv or scared and it’ll never show its full potential.

      You'd think that after 125 years of this National show, someone would have realized how to do it right? Why is this even allowed? People are watching this like it's normal to chase horses around with whips in a show. The horses are terrified. Yet still trying to do their best. Being studs, even being in the show ring with another young stud can be dangerous. Yet these ones are very well behaved. I'm just gobsmacked. I did not know that this kind of showing even happened in other countries. Would never happen in Canada. Not even once. The spectators would whip the crap out of the handlers if they saw something like that and he'd be banned for life.

    It’s rare for me to make a negative comment but this is an example of people that don’t have love and compassion for horses. If they did, first of all the horses would have their beautiful tails. That is so wicked to chop off their tails, especially to that extreme. That is their natural defense against biting insects. Yanking on the lead like that further showed how much he doesn’t know about handling horses. I hate to see people treat animals this way. I’ve never been a fan of cutting their tails or breaking the bone in order for it to be arched up for showing. It’s an unnecessary cruelty. They can never swish their tails at the bugs that bite them.

    The yanking of the bit is not needed and could've had a more positive result with a different approach or more training to slow down naturally. I am not one for docked tails for any animal, its cruel and not needed in today's world. A more experienced and gentle handler could have provided a different outcome. Horses are sensitive to who's near them, handling them and a crowd also plays into the mind of a horse. You can see the horses ears, eyes and body language not communicating with the handler. I'd would not have that trainer/handler/shower with a horse I owned. Overall handsome 4yr old.

      @Kitty Yes we agree. The op was any animal. I simply pointed out that some dog breeds are better off with a docked tail. As for the horse we agree. And as for your comment about selfish breeding desires. This concept people have that people should not mess with animals is in itself arrogance. You are shunning the hard work these animals and the people that worked with them did to build our modern world. You take for granted the lack of hard work you have to do. I honor my horses by giving them a job. They are my machinery. The fact is the modern horse is a human invention. True wild horses are nowhere near the size of domestic horses. Mustangs are not wild they are feral, and they often die of starvation because the land can not sustain their population. People have taken Rick’s words and twisted them to something else. I suggest you open your mind and learn from others that are not “animal activists”. Most of which are some of the most evil, vile, and selfish people on the planet. I suggest you educate yourself through real outdoorsmen like Rick. For example do you know outdoor sports enthusiasts donate more money and land to protect and repopulate endangered animals than anything groups like PETA have ever or will ever do because the truth is they could care less.

    Well, those people want to show horses and don´t teach them, how to behave. Belgian Draft Horses are very, very calm horses and mostly you can do everything with them. But you have to teach them how to do, when they go in a show. What this people are doing, is casing big horses around and pluck around in their mouth. You can´t say to a horse be nice and friendly and then there is someone with a whip and a platic bag on it behind, casing the horse in front. These horses must get confused. Teach them how to get led in the walk and in the trott and you will have no problem. This is not nice.

    That older guy at 2:45 just ran to the other side in front of a trotting horse, almost under his neck and then yanked reins very hard just before tripping causing that horse pain. That's why that horse got scared and just ran away instinctively. I can't see a really disobedient horse on whole video...

    Very clearly at 2:44 he was running in front of the horse WHILE yanking at the chain, and the horse was stressed enough from the beginning based on the ears flicking. The guy is lucky he didn’t get ran over and stepped on. I don’t understand how someone who can’t handle a horse is trying to show one

    This is a good video showcasing total incompetence by all the handlers! Also, what is the justification in completely destroying the appearance of these beautiful horses by completely cutting off their tails. They should be banned from owning and breeding horses. Obviously they only care about the money their horse can generate. I hate that attitude!

  • @barbaramarrs5113
    @barbaramarrs5113 Před 3 lety +1

    What is the purpose for cutting off their tails? Horses need their tails to swat at bugs.
    Jerking on the bit I wish the handler had to go through the same torture , make him know how painful it is.

    That accident was th handlers own fault, HE crossed in front of th horse too close and th horse clipped him because he got cut-off, th same exact way one would cause a car accident by cutting off another driver on th hwy. I'm a horse person without horses anymore, but I'm wrkn on fixing that problem. TRUE happiness, is riding your horse, your OWN horse that becomes almost like an extension of your own body once you know each other very well. My black paint mare, MarryAnn that I had, she knew when I wanted her t pick up speed,or turn or whatever. I didn't need t kick at all, I leaned forward and squeezed with th legs and she knew, and we flew. Th stable I was boarding her at in Arizona,th handlers let her water go dry, I caught it one day when I came t ride my other horse and told them about it and I'm pretty sure that's what killed her. I couldn't afford an autopsy at th time but I moved my remaining 2 horses to another location and told them all about what happened so they'd be VERY careful with my animals. Th assholes tried t tell me that she died of a heart attack..... just standing in her pen. NOPE, she would've died giving birth to her foal th year before,her heart was also checked by th vet at that time or shed've died while we were running at her top speed in th desert. She was so beautiful too,RIP my beautiful MarryAnn.

    If only these idiots realized that the whole time they were scaring the crap out of these horses and generally being the worst human beings possible, any one of these huge horses could have killed them with one well-timed kick, but, chose not to. Even with all the abuse, in that very noisy and distracting environment, the horses tried their best and did whatever they thought they needed to do. The one who spooked, which was not his fault, will no-doubt be punished for that. It just makes me sick to my stomach. That man didn't get enough of what he deserved. I feel no shame in saying that either.
    I grew up in the show ring. Not with drafts. But it's pretty much the same thing when you're 8 years old handling a full grown quarter horse. All horses have the ability to hurt you if they need to. But they choose not to. They choose to work with us and for us. Can we not appreciate that fact and give them the respect they deserve?
    Tonight I really hope I dream about a beautiful draft horse kicking the living daylights out of an elderly man with a totally useless whip in his hands for his defense. I will awake smiling.

  • @wiwoods4me
    @wiwoods4me Před 3 lety +1

    They do NOT need that treatment when asked to do something. Well trained means the horse understands what you want him to do. Next time start training earlier and develop a bond of trust. Neither one was thinking of the horse.

    You really don't want to hear my comment that trainer should not be allowed around any horse yanking on hat bit like that is cruel it's hurting the horse's mouth, he should be banned from ever showing a horse in an arena with people, the horse is nervous and that trainer is adding to it, If that man treated one of my horses like that I would use that whip on him.

    So far, 281K people have viewed this video in the last 3 years. A whopping 692 have actually pressed the like button. Hopefully those people were the ones who either participated in the abuse of these horses and somehow think it's normal, or they are people who are blissfully unaware of how to properly handle a horse. Still, 692 people thought this treatment of horses was great! I want to throw up.

    I am a teenager that Handel's Belgian drafts bigger than that and the yanking on the chain is unnecessary. These horses are spooked by the other people that are carrying whips coming behind them and it just scares the horse all around and this is very much not how you want to handle a horse. For all of you people saying that horses are treated cutely at my farm are horses are well loved even if they misbehave from time to time we all are sad to see someone miss treating our horses or any horses for that matter.
