First Ride with Bishop the rescued slaughter-bound Belgian Draft Horse

- So here it is!!! What everyone always waits for. The first ride. This one... just he and I out on a trail away from the house and his friends. He did VERY well. Better than expected given that his rope halter didnt fit right therefore I didnt have "Proper" control of him. He did as asked and was very much a gentleman, but I think if given the opportunity, he could be quite a bit of fun. Just not on the 1st ride. We keep that simple and relaxing.
I'm going to wear a head camera next time. Some of you may need to take Dramamine.

You are correct. The word opens up for work horses when the blinders are removed.
When I was 17 years old I worked as an Au Pair in Belgium. I got to see Belgium work in the fields. They were magnificent they could
turn on a dime at the end of the field and could come back ploughing a furrow perfectly. They also had Belgium Warmbloods that were
also incredibly accurate horses. Now a Belgium Warmblood is extremely expensive because of its Dressage Capabilities. Jane.

Thanks for sharing your experience in Belgium. By the way, when you are speaking of the country, the correct proper noun is "Belgium" of course. When you are identifying the horse, the correct proper noun is Belgian. When you are describing someone's ancestry, you would say "He is Belgian."
He is such a sweet big guy and so fun to watch him with you on him. A real gentle giant. So happy he found his way to you. many Blessing Bishop.
The horse auction is so heartbreaking. I love seeing all animals being well cared for and cherished. What a wonderful life he had with you. He is a real sweetie so very happy you saved him.

You have given him a life he probably never could have dreamt of ❤ And for a horse who doesn't seem to be very saddle broke he did exceptionally well especially with traffic. I love his little grunts and objections, but he still listens so well! Also, good tip to know that boysenberries are chicken wormers!

He relaxed pretty quickly, as he must have felt, that you are a good person and would do him no harm. He was really happy, when he was shouting out loud on the road, like he was telling everyone "Hey, I am still alive, and I am thankful for that!"

He seems to be bomb proof to traffic, my kind of horse. lol You can definitely tell he had been mistreated, not only from the visible marks, the sores, but in his eyes. He is a horse that needs a lot of love and attention. A cuddle bug and once he knows that this is what he will get from you, you'll have a buddy for life. :) I so wished I could have a horse!!!
No sure where you are from, but if you can use wood chips for flooring, you should contact your city department. Here, they let you get all the chips from trees they've had to cut down you want for free so they don't have to worry about dumping them.
I like your gentle touch with your horse, you are doing well. Keep up the good work and he is an amazing horse. He should heal up that foot issue and on dry ground it will all be good! Give him a hug for me! I think he is a Belgian cross, Belgians are very wide.
Don't tell me. . . a throw-away horse that gave his all for an Amish owner. Good for you for tying the halter knot the right way.
I get free wood chips from a local tree service. They even load it for no charge. It's not quite as soft as shavings or straw and sometimes you have to pick out a few twigs and sticks, but it's softer than bare ground, helps prevent 'bed sores' and soaks up the pee.
We did use wood chips in the run in after we had a tree cut down. It was a pain to shovel, but it was warmer for them and did allow ant pee to seep through.

So cruel to slaughter a horse. For non Americans out there, the "story of the west" was written on a saddle, and horses are huge in American culture. Just about anyone you meet here will agree that killing a horse is cruel and evil.
Unfortunately in US people send horses and ponies to auction where they mostly go for meat in Mexico and Canada
It is sad but true. Horses in the US that are going to slaughter can only hope to go to Canada where conditions are “better”. In America it’s illegal to slaughter horses for meat, and interesting to know that in Europe it’s illegal to raise horses for meat. I suppose we would be overrun with horses if something was not done. I don’t like it, it is what it is, we can’t keep them all, but I can try to save a few. And THAT makes me happy.
@@laurem5485 Hi Laure, I did not know horses were not allowed to be raised for meat in Europe. It just seems crazy that Europeans and some Asian countries eat horse meat, while no one in USA eats it. It is such nonsense it seems.
Here, slaughter is used as an alternative to digging a grave or sending a body out for processing. Once the owner knows its time for the horse to pass on, some may choose to eat the horse themselves, use for dog food or donate the meat to a zoo. The owner drives the horse to the butcher themselves, watch it go down and come back after a while to pick up the meat.
Slaughter isnt cruel when done right, here many ''horse dealers'' buy off older or unrideable horses and will either sell them saying theyre in top shape, or ship them off to Italy where horse meat is a delicacy. Id say legalizing slaughter in the US would probably keep the majority of kill buyers from shipping their horses long distances to Mexico, the meat tastes great, and if you know where its from, even more sustainable than beef or pork.

@@DanishButterCookie the horse is a noble creature mentioned frequently in the bible and I think it's barbarian to have an almost family member taken to the butchers to be slaughtered and eaten ,shame on those that do ! The solution would be if the horse is old and sick after the vet euthanizes it ,to cremate it !!!!!!

Same here.... I miss my Bob so much. He was so funny and sweet quite the character. Carried my nine year old through 4h with such pride. Thank you for rescuing Bishop and sharing him with us. Bob was Belgium quarter cross. His head was longer than my daughter was tall. Sorry I'm rambling.

I owned an Arab with white feet/feathers and EVERY SPRING he got scratches and cut his hock open scratching. 🙄 so he spent spring and early summer featherless.
Anyway, due to health issues I no longer ride. My boy passed away at 18 yr old.
I found this video very relaxing as I found your methods wonderful giving him the courage to proceed safely.

Absolutely LOVED this video. I experienced it SO well by your filming style, your quite times, your written words and skill. I could smell the air, and feel which foot was being planted when. You are doing for horses, what I hope to do with children :) I am in the process of moving to 10 acres to start a very small hobby farm and offer foster care for teens before they age out of the system..and likely do some volunteer animal therapy sessions as that is my training. You work so well with Bishop. It was a joy to see.

I just found your channel and I appreciate what you do for these rescues! I see that this is now an older video. Hopefully, Bishop became less barn sour and enjoys giving rides more, as his mud fever and other painful conditions improve.

This is only the first video I’ve ever seen on your channel but I have to say I’m quite impressed! Especially with the bitless riding!
Thank you. Every horse I have purchased has never had a bit in its mouth as long as it’s with me. It takes extra time for them to learn what I’m asking, but they do it willingly and not because of what they expect to feel from that big hunk of metal in the roof of their mouths and pinching their tongues. I have yet to come across a draft that was so awful it needed one. You earn trust first through groundwork then you ask to go for a ride.

You may enjoy watching a woman named Stephanie who has a CZcams channel. She goes by @Happier on Horses. She is very informative. I have watched several of her videos. She gives demonstrations and has a draft horse named Fame. She is very well-spoken and interesting/fun to watch. She did a Ride-a-long similar to this called something like "Draft horse trail riding" or "Trail riding with my Draft Horse." I hope i gave you enough clues to find her CZcams. She is truly awesome. She trail rides in scenic California

nice video and always good to see when horses gets a good life instead of going to the Slaugterhouse .oh I miss riding alot been many years since I had my own horse bought her when she was 1 year old spend 2 years with ground work before one day to just sit on her back like it was just another day I miss her so much, and I hope one day I can get a horse again but sadly right now I cant where i live

You don’t need to clip his feathers. Just use Chorine Dioxide mixed in water soak or spray on area. It is an oxidizer. I noticed his eye area is also infected. It’s a fungal issue, internal & external, and he probably would benefit from probiotics. Love your video.
so much easier just to clip excess hair away so the whole thing can dry out properly and KEEP dried out soas not to continue to problem; cheaper n easier than putting stuff on it 24/7...

@@Lauren-vd4qe Gotcha! My feathered friends don’t get clipped, nor bridle pathed. But for many breeds the clippers are pretty standard.

Here’s a quick trick: clip the reins to the bottom of the halter and use the pressure from below.

thats a nice place you have. And it's a nice looking mane to look at as you ride anI like how you're leaving him free control of his head. You'll get further and faster with him in trust that way im sure. Too many keep tight reins and it sadden me.
Thank you. His mane is amazing now! I tray to create a mutual trust relationship with the horses. I ask them to do things and they do them because they want to, not because I forced them to.
