Any boat project can be tackled as long as you are OK spending a lot of time and money on it. Often, you can pick up a boat cheap and then spend a few hundred thousand dollars on it. When you are done you can easily sell it for roughly half of what you spent. Not counting your time, of course.
Mads, I'm glad you gave a very realistic numbers, on both time and expense, to refit the Passport 47. I'm about 2.5 years into a total bare hull up restoration of my 1968 Hatteras 34, and have about another 2 years to go. Folks don't realize that life gets in the way, and unless you don't need to work and have a very nice chunk of change set aside- you're gonna have to work- so you have money, but no time. And when you have time, there's no money lol. I'm fortunate that I work at a boat yard, so I don't pay storage and I get a commercial discount on anything I need. I wish people would understand what it truly takes to rebuild a boat- then I wouldn't have so many zombie boats in my yard!

Add a local place to stay, food, travel expences, and add a small shop and tools since the yard's shop wouldn't be available 24/7 or exclusively for this project. Could tow it home and put it inside a workshop... Current prices on teak...
Well, when new boats lose HALF of their value in first 5-->10 years of ownership... It is impossible to work on old boats and have it pay back your sweat equity. They are luxury items and ONLY luxury items.
Two things....1) without putting the super sharp pencil to the estimate I think you are reasonably close in the ballpark at 147K. 2) It would be nice to see your time split about 50/50 between another project and sailing since DIY is what pulled me to your channel to start with.
I'm very excited to refit another bigger boat! The biggest challenge is going to be finding the right hull/boat for us. I want to do ONE more boat - not two ;)

I do understand the urge to work another project. Your content is still compelling without the need to be stuck in a purgatory of O’ Glorious Sanding all week. Just to have content for a 30 minute episode each week. Are we not entertained?
@SailLife find one on the great lakes. Storage and supplies are cheaper , it would be a good thing to work on over hurricane season and ava would be close to her parents house.
@@SailLifeI actually think you are writing off that teak way too soon. It comes back beautifully. We used an old junked garden chair to get the teak for our hatch and it looked like new when finished.
Mads, you and Aiva (sorry not sure on the spelling) have a beautiful boat and you have worked hard over the last few years rebuilding her. Just go and enjoy each others company sailing the seas in what I would say is a very nice craft. I have seen people take on similar projects and sadly somethimes health constraints restrict them continuing. One never knows whats around the corner. Cheers Ian

We have to make sure we find the perfect boat for us :) I love sailing and cruising, but I also love DIY. In terms of making videos, I much prefer making videos about DIY!
Can you stop saying "somewhat extensive refit" you did an awesome extensive refit of the boat. Honestly you are down playing the work you have done. I've followed you since you were considering living aboard and it always grates me that you don't take some pride in what you did. Honestly what you did to your boat is awesome. Take pride in what you did.
I think he's mocking himself, in good humor, for calling it "somewhat extensive". Obviously it was an over-the-top extensive refit.
I once helped a friend's 47" sail his new but unspecific yacht up the Oslo Fjord. He had used 2 yrs to build the hull and semi-completed the rig it his back yard. The boat was definitively sailable as we cruised along in 10-12 knots in merely 10-15 knots wind. Why so fast? Apart from the bulkheads, subframe, floors, motor and the basic mechanical components the hull was completely empty. No seats or cabinets, no water or toilet and just a tied down metal ladder to get in and out of the 2 m deep interior. I remember he pointed out: when you have a project boat just "waterproof the thing," set sails and go sailing. That way you won't get burned out before the final fitting out.
100% agree that people are over concerned about osmosis. We bought ours with about a dozen or so small blisters, negotiated a discount and went sailing. In the words of our surveyor - no boats were ever sank from osmosis, but a fair few new ones were bought with the profits made from treating it.
I think John Kretchmer is the one celebrity I'd both like to have a beer with, and could probably have a beer with. I've listened to most of his books multiple times. The man has seemingly seen it all and done it all, but most importantly, keeps doing it. No offense Mads, I'm sure you'd also be great to have a beer with, or some gammel dansk..

I think it’s safe to say the your boat refit skills are superior to most channels, that is your super-power. Do you need another boat , no. Would I enjoy watching you refit another boat , hell yeah !!!! You tech ideas and applications are second to none , attention to detail is next level , keep em coming !!!

2. I would LOVE that passport restoration project if I had the time and resources. Which is after all one of the many things I have appreciated about your channel over the years. The amount of knowledge you share on why you made the decisions that were right for you vs other solutions available.
3. Passports feel amazingly stable and sturdy from my experience. Even last spring at the Annapolis spring boat show on an awful weather day tied to the temporary docks she floated strong and sturdy. I would have never known how choppy the waters were outside.
4. Hope to see you at the fall boat show though the youtube booth is often highly visited and very busy. I've only glanced a few youtubers from a distance due to the crowds, but still an amazing opportunity for many of us who follow your channels and projects.
In my book, Athena is perfect size and fit for you two. Any larger and things start to not only get harder to "handle," but cost goes up exponentially on everything. There is no harm in dreaming! Great video!

Just a clarification on the cap rail issue Ben mentioned. There is no issue with the deck/hull joint at all, meaning no water comes into the boat through that joint. The issue is that there is a void under the cap rail that should have been filled with resin or something. Water gets in there and then will slowly drip down the side of the boat sometimes causing some mild stains. It's a cosmetic issue only which could be solved by removing the cap rail, filling with the epoxy foam like in your rudder and reinstalling teak. Also, while the side deck core can get wet on these, it really isn't that much of an issue as it's a narrow area and the laminate is quite thick, so they rarely get flexy.
That is one of my favorite aspects of these videos, watching the build. Odd life crafting, Sampson boat co., and a few others, such a wealth of knowledge to be obtained on these videos.

A mid 40s(feet) center cockpit would be a good choice if you want to stick with a monohull IMO. The idea of a decent sized main cabin that that brings seems very appealing for a live-aboard couple. Of course a nice catamaran could also do that, but likely at more cost and complexity.

Passport 47 needs to be turned into fishing lure weights as well. That's a "one dollar nightmare boat" for sure.
Loved this video. I think you basically have a choice, either spend the next 2-3 years enjoying sailing Athena and have a great time / lifestyle, or sell her now and start another DIY boat refit (with all the fun and satisfaction that brings). If you take the first choice, you may never get to the second choice . But if you take the second choice, you really miss out on the reward for all your hard work refitting Athena. Its a tough choice to make. Either way , it will be fun to keep watching you guys, whatever you do

You already know that refitting any boat in a crowded boat yard is nearly impossible. Boat yards are for short maintenance projects. A refit like this needs a dedicated space where you can spread out and have all of the tools necessary within reach. An advantage of this yard is all of the dedicated professionals available but that will drive the cost up considerably. Better wait until you can find a spot where an enclosed space is readily available and one that is somewhat climate controlled. That will make the project available 24/7 and easier to stay motivated. Good luck with your search!
That Bowman 57 was definitely too far gone and cutting it up for scrap is definitely the best use of it.

Great vid! I love Teak, but all that dark wood would not be a pleasant environment over time. Mixing in some rich wood with a lot of light colored paint (like Athena) is the way to go, I think.
Love the Passport 47. Find a center cockpit version though!

Mads I’ve been around boats almost of my life, take my advice there’s ALWAYS ALWAYS another boat, keep cruising enjoy yourself for couple years then you can return to looking for a larger boat DIY.

I won't be getting my fixer upper FIX on new boat channels. Boating is one continuous Project, why remove that element. Have you guys gone diving again? Sprinkle more ashore adventures in like Spain, Portugal?

Too early, now it's just too satisfying to see the fruits of your labor. My vote is anyway for an aluminium boat so it's more safe and you can go to any latitude. Especially if you will have children down the line this will give you peace of mind.

Alas, looking at what you showed of the 57ft boat, unless you were a masochist with more money than sense, it’s landfill. The 47ft boat would I suspect be possible but the time and money required unless one could do it pretty much all one’s self be prohibitive and again not really viable. I have just bought a little 1974 30ft Swanson (Australian boat), with a huge ocean racing and cruising history, and while it’s had many great upgrades there is still plenty of work ahead in it for me. Asides it needing to be completely repainted on the outside, and requires some systems updates, there is more than enough down below to be done to make it more practical (storage, galley improvements, fridge etc). I am sure it’s going to test my abilities and limited budget. Still, all the timber trim on deck now looks great and up forward is completed re finishes, well asides the chain locker.
Mads, just enjoy Athena and keep sailing. Afterall, it’s why you restored the boat, seriously you don’t really want go through all that again, it’s way too much work, time and money.
Next boat?! You put in YEARS on that one and you're already looking for the next project? I love it!!! Some people like the fixing process MORE than utilizing whatever car, boat, truck, they fixed. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the hunt for your next project.

In the US there's plenty of good deals on boats in decent shape. I didn't look at the estimate but labor or at least living expenses need to be included.

Agree with a solid fiberglass hull and moisture levels but wow the rest of that Passport is a mess. I don't think anything in the cabin is salvage worthy. Gutting it all and doing a quick but efficient interior design with plywood and fiberglass would make the most sense, but electronics, plumbing and A/C, rigging and engine work would easily eat up 100K and that is on the cheap! Sad ending!,,,John

I also watched Expedition Evens. I’m excited to see all your adventures. I liked your idea of helping other people on the east coast with projects. I wish you luck on your efforts to find your next project, I see from the comments that a lot of people are like me and liked your refit videos. I wish that you could get something set up so you could live your dream of sailing, but also figure out a way to keep your subscriber base happy with your content. Good luck. Maybe a way to keep your base happy could be for you to do what you did on this video, review boats, and then give realistic expectations of cost and refit time. Again. Good luck you guys. Mads, when a boat gets dropped on its side, the tabbing for every bulkhead and cabinet can broken. Meaning total rebuild. And unless you can get masts shipped down as deck cargo, normally they'll have to be sleeved. Gobs of things you wouldn't suspect.
An episode or two focusing on a DIY boat for a beginner, say around 32 to 37 ft could be interesting. Bonus points for finding and describing the right balance between the need for DIY and just pure sailing fun. I suppose at a certain point it becomes a 'how to sail' episode rather than cool projects, so even more production challenges!

I want a Hunter 29. I am 5’10’’ and want something i can stand in and still trailer while being large enough to take places and spend the weekend. I do have a land loving wife and kids so moving onto a boat is off the table. I only tell you this i case you find something and can add content that would help me in making my own decision one day.
From what I could see on your video the wood work did not look that bad, I believe most could be salvaged and repaired.

Far out! What a depressing video, seeing those boats in such a sad condition, all that beautiful timber work rotting away and thinking about the amount of work it would take to fix it.
you can get alot of project boats from craigslist or show up in a marina.
Repair/refit aside....just annual maint, dock/mooring/marina fees, insurance and operating costs for a 57' sailboat would far exceed the average annual income for the US
I think Ava has a great idea, your next boat should be a cat, sailing in Caribbean and Pacific is cat sailing meca. Now, if your head north than differently stay with a mono hull. 😅 i am after just an armchair sailor so my vote doesn't count 😅
I would assume that your potential income is split between You Tube and the eventual sale of Athena. Your channel seems to have a unique split between boat repairs and a travelogue. Should you finish all your repairs I imagine your viewership will drop. I expect that you realize that once a project is complete the hunt for its replacement must be found. As such you not only must find a new project but you have to find a locale close to boatyards supplies and the various nautical vendors and personal needs for convenient medical care and air travel. I suggest something that I bet is not on your list: competent and reliable labor for renovations and childcare (someday). I suggest that part of your allure is that you complete well thought out projects on quick delivery schedules. To keep the magic going getting a bigger boat is a given and furthermore you follow the market which is obviously moving towards multihulls. When this new project is complete you will deserve a good return on your labors. I also suggest that you employ full time labor so that there is is a steady flow of accomplishments to attract new readership and keep the existing viewers. Also having help to maintain momentum will allow you to pursue new activities that would interest viewers
Like see parents, develop friendships with other sailers and attend boat shows. Also should there eventually be a child in the mix you need to to have a plan in place. Lastly bigger boats have bigger problems with longer delivery on needed parts. Also give some thought on the future and and what complimentary boat business might suit either one of you.

I think you folks have laid things out very rationally , yes going sailing on a boat that requires just maintenance will get you sailing. However bearing in mind no boat is perfect I suggest you pack tools and a desire to learn or cash.
Now the joys of oh glorious years of work if you have the time and space learning and growing is in my view a life well lived. This is why Sunday is a good day, another chance to visit with a darn interesting couple.
Oh yea I ran the numbers on the boat and I think you folks are off for the retrofit by $123.77 U.S..

I would not even consider paying $50.00 for any of the boats you highlighted in your show. And, I due believe that the cost of refitting that last boat would be more than your estimate. As well, I would be tempted in taking out the wood to refinish it & reusing most of the wood after gutting & fiberglassing the boat. Thanks for the video - love your channel. 😊❤😊

Mads, I know that the two of you would do a great job of retrofitting either of those once beautiful boats, but the costs and time to do so are too much after spending all of the years you have retrofitting Athena 😊 and just getting the chances to get going on your sailing adventures starting in Europe. Maybe if you were into the 4th or 5th year of your sailing adventures, I could see the two of you taking on another major DIY, but not now. The other issue I have is why would someone(s) let these beautiful boats get into such terrible condition. Knowing what they cost initially? Wow, that is so sad!😮
You remind me somewhat of my father. Loved sailing, but I think he loved doing up boats more. Which is fine, you do a fantastic job doing up boats. Mads, the hanging light at 12:44 with the fresnel lens is a den haan rotterdam anker licht and new they are worth about 1000 euro, you can pick then up for 100-200 from second hand stores. I use one of these (that i refurbished) as an anchor light on my albin ballad
