Lightning Strikes Fire Station (sets off siren)

  • NOTE: For lightning, skip to 00:52.
    A series of cells passed through the suburbs of Melbourne, AUSTRALIA on Wednesday, 7th of January, 2015.
    There were 2 VERY close strikes from where I live in FTG. And with much luck, the second strike happened right at the same moment I was filming for the storms, and that it was right in the camera's field of vision.
    The strike managed to set off the local fire station's siren, that is situated on the lookout tower.
    Footage by Martin Fellner, Copyright January, 2015.

      for a siren like this? it probably has a rectifier and a transformer,
      and maybe a wail circuit in place with some simple switches, but no
      complex electronics like a motherboard.
      Plus things like this have a device called a lightning arrestor, which basically stops as much current flow as it can.
      granted I wouldn't be surprised if it blew a fuse or 2.

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti Před 7 lety +26

      Sounds like the wail circuit didn't get affected, as it wailed like it normally would.
      It's possible that an electrical spike caused the thing to think someone pushed the button/switch to operate it.

    Actually some fire station sound there sirens for lightning so it may have been a perfectly time sound or the electricity connected with the panel during the strike it’s 50/50

    Was it actually the lightning strike that activated the alarm or was it a coincidence?
    PS: It's usually a courtesy on videos like this to have a 'high volume warning' so people don't harm their ears or disturb others if they have not set the volume correctly for this particular loud video. :-)

      Andrew Williams strike, actually happened to us less than an hour ago, flipped the circut breaker to the siren (oops) and set the damn thing off. A battery backup i suppose. If signal is cut, it sounds.

    Since when can you hear lighting?

    • @trainz10
      @trainz10  Před 5 lety

      Well technically speaking, you actually CAN 'hear' lightning under very specific circumstances. If a lightning strikes close enough to you (like in this video)... you don't just hear the thunder (the rumbly, crackling part) caused by the rapid thermal expansion of air (thus causing a shock wave), but also you can hear sparking from the actual discharge itself (which you can hear very faintly in the video).
      But to be able to hear the spark, you'd have to be VERY close to the strike (which in this case was only about 100 meters from where I was standing). It's VERY terrifying. xP
