  • Janelia scientists and collaborators reached another milestone in connectomics, releasing a comprehensive wiring diagram of the fruit fly visual system.
The optic lobe connectome provides a map of the more than 50,000 neurons, of more than 700 distinct types, that form the fruit fly’s visual system, giving scientists the fullest picture yet of one of the most intriguing and important parts of the nervous system.
This video shows the neuropils in the optic lobe -- the lamina, medulla, accessory medulla, lobula, and lobula plate -- and some of the columnar neurons in the optic lobe.
