Using Color Theory to Fix Solid Maple Mid Century Modern Desk with a DARK burn!

HERE’S HOW I DID IT!
I found this vintage, solid maple MCM Crawford desk at an estate sale buyer for $60 (it was originally $120, so I got a steal!). Maple is always a difficult one for me, but I couldn’t say no to such a good price. Even with that ugly dark stain on the top!
+ first I cleaned it. I’m always asked why I clean before sanding… well, one, it’s sanitary. Two, it helps me see what I’m working with better. And three, my sanding pads don’t gum up as fast which leads to a decreased cost of supply and increased profit margin.
+ I sanded with 120 grit using my @festool orbital
+ applied oxalic acid from @realmilkpaintco … which typically works, but I think this was more of a burn stain not an iron stain
+ I tried to iron, but that also didn’t work
+ I then pre-conditioned the piece with @myoldmasters oil-based pre conditioner. I let the piece sit overnight
+ then stained with one coat of a fruitwood gel stain. I would’ve used General Finishes Prairie Wheat, but I didn’t have any left
+ I used my veneer touchup paint kit to color correct the stain. I used yellow and orange to counteract the brown stain. Once that dried, I went in with an oak color. I mixed the oak color with walnut for the graining detail
+ I sealed everything up with several coats of a semi-gloss lacquer!!
I definitely need to improve and practice on my inline painting skills… but I’m pretty proud of my first attempt. This piece is over all pretty splotchy and aged, so its imperfect repair kind of fits right in, haha!

I do something similar to this with my make up; I exfoliate and moisturise before applying a coat of foundation then covering blemishes with concealer and finally adding a layer of setting spray to seal it all in. #TransferableSkills 😂 Well done, restored beautifully. 😘👌 Hope you have a great weekend! ❤

Nice job on that coverup! Art school paid off! Have you used the wood conditioner with shellac? I’m trying to match an existing wood paneling color from the 50’s and original finish was amber shellac. Can’t quite get a match with other finishes but the first coat is raising the wood grain. Sanding is knocking off some of the color before finishing with clear shellac. Nice work on all of your furniture. Nice to see someone saving classic pieces.
