    I really really enjoyed this video. I haven't grown potatoes yet, but I very much want to. I'm convinced that the best way for me to start is to do it in containers. Glad there is more than one way to plant. I've seen demonstrations of the "fill-in" way. Maybe I'll try that one day. But I'll be starting out the way you show here. Thank you!

    Potash is water soluble. It can be applied in the top of the soil as watering and rain will wash it in.
    For phosphorous I use bone meal.
    On top of the potatoes I planted leaf lettuce. Lettuce should be done by the time potatoes break the surface.
    I will use some Alaska fish fertilizer when needed.
    A plain white bed sheet works well too as a shade.

    My 90 day mark is this coming Tuesday. I'm excited to dig up my potatoes grown in a garden bed. Last year's attempt in a large container went awry due to bad organic soil, which I think was compromised, so it stunted growth. These plants got huge and green, but I think I only fed them once after planting. I did mix in mushroom compost, raised bed soil, fertilizer, and azomite with the dirt and mulched with straw. But I can guarantee my soil is not as loose as what you just showed. I don't know how you keep the soil so loose.

      Congrats on starting your garden! Gary has a number of videos for first-time gardeners. Go to the home page on his channel. All the way to the right is the search feature. Just type in "beginner" and choose from the presented videos. Or click the Playlist tab, and select "How to Start, Grow, and Plant Your First Vegetable Garden" and watch all the videos. If it still feels overwhelming, then come back into the comment section of Gary's most recent video, tell him you've watched, and tell him at what point you start to feel overwhelmed. I bet he can guide you through that rough patch. Whatever you do, don't give up! You can do this! I wish you the best of luck!

      So its overwhelming but remember they do fine with just compost. Potatoes need this IMO. But youll see there's a learning curve. You can buy any organic fertilizer on sale and use that. Buy 1 dry product and 1 water soluble product. The cheapest. Just use them. Ignore the rest LOL and you will still be fine.

    Gary, I prepared a plastic tubful of beautiful soil at the end of last year and stored it in the shed on my balcony. When I pulled it out to use it early this summer, there was green mold/algae completely covering the surface. I sprayed the top with vinegar but read later that this would destroy anything I planted in it. Can this soil be used, or do I toss it out? Thanks.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před rokem

      Mold will die off in the sun. Vinegar can increase acidity of soil and cause issue but you need a lot. Sprinkle some lime on the surface and mix it in. That will decrease acidity and just let it dry in the sun and that will kill the mold. You can use it. However if you are using it for potatoes they dont mind more acidity.

      So there is truth to that. And fields of potatoes wouldnt make sense but in a home garden, you naturally have cooler places, you can use shade cloth and mulch helps. You may not get perfect size but you can get a lot. Granted our temps for highs are upper 80s and 90s. If you are in a place where upper 90s and 100s is your high, it might not be practical.

      Well better draining soil might help. Chitted or sprouted can help. Also if you are doing spring planting, waiting till its a little warmer can help. Water less to start, until green shows. Good luck.

      Key is consistent watering. Dont over nitrogen them once they start growing
