All this man had was his guitar and yet he played like no other could, his songs were stories and poems that you believe in completely, Rory was the real deal by a long Irish country mile.
However true the "Irish" bit here may be, it's kind of obsolete. If it's important to you, say, "One of the best blues artists ever, and he was Irish." 😉
Many years back, Rory Gallagher was set to open for Status Quo at the Queen's Park Arena in Burnaby, BC. I went by myself and at opening time an announcer came out to explain that Status Quo's drummer had injured his hand working on a car. Rather than cancelling the concert, it was decided that Rory Gallagher would do a double-long show. It was an unforgettable display of guitar wizardry. Especially when he played slide.
hrothgar64, did you know that Jimi Hendrix, when called "the greatest guitar player ever" by a rock journalist conducting an interview, corrected him and told him that if he wanted to talk to the greatest ever, then he should talk to Rory Gallagher.
i agree, i listen to this in my car every day, beautiful lament in the guitar, those sweet harmonics, and you can here rory in background and i see his face in this solo more than any other tune, absolutely love him, when its finished i almost always say out loud "thank you Rory."..xxxx
David Gilmour can create a magical feeling in a different way, when Dave plays especially on his solo albums it really touches me like this track does by Rory
@hrothgar64 Well your favorite Rory song is ripoff of Gyöngyhajú Lány by Omega. @djspliff26 "did you know that Jimi Hendrix, when called "the greatest guitar player ever" by a rock journalist conducting an interview, corrected him and told him that if he wanted to talk to the greatest ever, then he should talk to Rory Gallagher. " That never happened, and if it did it, it wasn't Rory Gallagher, that bullshit statement has been made about lot of guitarists. And the first time I heard it, the guitarist named was Jeff Beck. Stop repeating that myth, if you can't prove it. Hendrix actually said:"How about best on this chair." in that Cavett interview.
Saw him live 3 times in the 70s - Liverpool, London, Manchester - wish it had been more. Never saw any other act more than once. Absolutely no comparison. I wasn't a great concert goer but he was the only one I wanted to see again, and again.
I was around back then, saw lots of bands. Not saying at all that Rory was Gods gift. What he did do was to plough his own furrow. He is imo one of the very best live performers I've seen, and if you are a concert goer that's all that matters.
Especially this song is underrated by a lot of people. Fine harmonics, perfects fills and breaks..... even bass is superb. As I heard this song for the first time I repeated it at once for at least one our or more....Thats like reading a book at a stretch to understand all of the content - sure you know what I mean 😅
Growing up with Rory's music, listening to Crest Of A Wave at the age of 15 with its soaring slide, combined with a lovely tune was a wonderful experience. it was a never ending series of joyful albums and live performances for the next 20 years.. I can't explain it, but there's something about his playing that no one else has, combined with his natural humility. Those who love his music know what I mean.
i saw some great rock bands of the sixties and seventies, but I would trade any of those to have seen Rory live. What an artist and performer, R.I.P. Mr. Gallagher, you are much loved and missed.

I feel like Jerry’s enthusiasm was just as important as his skill. Rory wasn’t the same after Jerry left after all those years. I’ve never seen a bass player so Into the songs. The band Rory had his last few years were stiff on stage.
I'm only or just 39 years old. I live in Poland. Rory came here once, about 10-12 years before I was born. I was only ten when he died. When I was able to learn about him and his music I got crushed with the fact that I would never have a chance to see him live, and I would give almost all gigs I have seen to see just one set of Rory's. He was absolutely extraordinary! And I am pissed that media don't bring his music back to younger generations

No girl friend's ever, look at the guy he must have had women falling over him, I don't believe he was sad it would show in his performance's, perhaps lonely at times but he had Donal there all his life that's love but it's different than romance. He was a very private man there's things we will never know and maybe that's why he shunned the big time, he turned down cream and the stones, his actions reflect that, he obviously didn't want to be under the microscope
Why do I see in this masterpiece of music this song was written and performed about that love that got away? Too humble of a man to show how much it hurt him, so he writes about it in song form which happens to be one of his many great songs ever written
