+Miguel Angel Alvirde true. The truth is that they are both halves of the unofficial ancient University of England and are among the tiny number of non US unis to merit unquestioned inclusion in the global top 10.
When younger people ask me what the differences are between the two places, I often struggle to suggest anything significant in terms of current academic output. But, in terms of ideology or temperament, I offer this analogy: Oxbridge is like Hogwarts split in the middle: Oxford is like Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, with everything good and bad that entails, while Cambridge is like Ravenclaw and Slytherin, with everything good and bad that entails.
+WarthDader74 , University is only unnecessary if you take an unnecessary course, how can you become a doctor without going to uni ? Exactly so your statement is false lol
Rmiah13 I think the whole system is all wrong. If someone wants to be a doctor, they should start working in a hospital immidiately, and be educated there at the same time as they earn money. That would be much better than wasting a lot of time and money on a university, where you have to learn a lot of stuff which isn't relevant to the actual job you are heading for.
Prestige is like a currency: its value changes when you move to a different region. The other day I was talking about MIT with an Indian engineer. She didn't know much about MIT and I hadn't heard of her school in India, which, as it turns out, is a whole lot more selective! It's funny how many people base their self-esteem on cachet only to have it vanish when they move outside of their own bubbles.
Despite that, Oxford and Cambridge are known internationally. Most professionals known about these universities even if only by name. For someone who wants to gain jobs in a variety of countries, having gone to Oxford or Cambridge is one of the best bets to make an impression in employers. Yes, prestige changes its values depending on the region you live in, but just like money, some is better than none.
***** That's interesting. The Oxford brand is less recognizable in the United States, which goes to show that the prestige of a university is relative. It depends on your perspective and nationality.
Cole Davis Not actually. Oxford and Cambridge were the first universities in the world and hundreds of years before other universities existed they started accepting international students. They've educated world - leaders for centuries. And the amount of history and tradition about both of them is crazy.
***** Actually the day Oxford was founded is unknown but teaching existed since 1096, while the university of Bologna was founded in 1088 so we can't be sure if oxford is the oldest in the world or not. And Oxbridge gives the best education in the world. They showed their high standards throughout the centuries. Hundreds of years before other universities existed, Oxford accepted their first international student - Emo in 1190. And yes, oxford and Cambridge are really some of the best in the world - they always rank in the top 5.
i desperately want to get into oxford. however, i still have quite a few years of school to complete first before making my decision. for people who applies to either, i wish you luck in getting in!
Cambridge, simply the best, ahead of any other university in the world, just for only one reason, that most of the football fans know, Thanks Cambridge for this beautiful game that is part of our daily, mostly weekends life. Thanks to our lovely Scottish immigrant teacher Mr. Alexander Watson Hutton, father of the AFA. A partner from Argentina and a River Plate- All Boys fan.
Exactly. Getting in is a walk in the park. *eyeroll* It is very difficult to do well at A Level if you are not motivated enough, so it stands to reason that we should be proud of our achievements.
Depends. At Cambridge they offer a Natural Sciences course in which you study all Biological and Physical sciences and only later specialise in a particular science whereas at Oxford you can immediately do a course in a particular field of science and then specialise further into that field later. From my research it seems Cambridge is better for science if you know you want to go into science but aren't sure which field or just want a more general scientific understanding. However Oxford seems better for specialisation within a field and if you definitely know which science is your thing.
I have one question I submitted my application when I log in it says application in progress what does it mean by that ? do I wait for USF to ask for the transcripts and letter of recommendation or do I send them ?

Cambridge all the way! It is substantially more beautiful than Oxford. As well as having one of the most iconic Chapels and its Library has every educational book ever published.
Cambridge has been universally acknowledged as the best UK university, over the past 10-15 years. Oxford and Cambridge together are in a different league to the best of the rest, thanks to the collegiate system providing comfortable accommodation and delicious food - no time wasting shopping, cooking, washing up etc... plus a ready made community of like minded students - and a college bar, gym, fantastic sports facilities, frequent college socials - and most importantly tutors, often leading academics in their particular fields, providing one/two to one tutorials on a weekly basis. If you're not VERY bright or want to spend your three years getting pissed, then avoid Oxbridge. There is a massive amount of extremely difficult and challenging work that only the best students will cope with.
It's been my dream to study at Cambridge since I first heard about it at age 10. I'm currently 16 and would like to study medicine as I want to be a surgeon.
