Respraying My AMG GT Black Series! This is Why...

- It's time to do this, I'm respraying my AMG GT Black Series to Solarbeam Yellow! It's a controversial move for sure, but it's always been the plan and as such we've got a convoy with the SLS Black Series too up to Chartwell to run over the plans and set everything up.
The SLS was in fact the first car I ever resprayed, which was done by Chartwell over a year ago off the back of the repair they did on my McLaren Senna; both of which were perfectly carried out. The SLS BS was originally Himalaya Grey, but I bought the car specifically with the intention to transform it into Mystic Blue; which at the time certainly was a bold move but the result could not have been better.
For the new AMG GT Black Series, there were only 8 colour options available for a RHD UK allocation, so as a result it meant I was unable to choose Solarbeam as I had previously always intended for the car. Given I didn't fancy the launch Magmabeam for it, or want to go blue or green, I decided to do Graphite Grey Magno as the best base colour for a respray. This is because it doesn't leave any bright colour components visible in the engine bay etc.
While part of me loves the 'Batmobile' look, and will be sad to see it go, I cannot wait for the Solarbeam triple layer paint and the accompanying contrast against the carbon fibre, plus a few bespoke touches for this car specifically.

Time to put the plans into action, and get the process started to respray my AMG GT Black Series! Solarbeam yellow was always the plan, and it wasn't an option to choose it from factory, so it's up to Chartwell just like with the SLS Black Series, for a full permanent transformation. I might be mad, but can't wait for the result!
Curious, was Topaz Skin in Solarbeam Yellow not a better reversible option?
Maybe a super expensive idea but.....
What about coloring the carbon fiber?? Like... For example.. The Triple F's collection... They have a speedtail that is exposed carbon that has a really nice blue...
I mean... Yellow carbon fiber may not look great in some cases, but I think in the future... I'd love to see you do something with colored carbon...

The GT Black Series looks amazing in that Grey Magno, I personally wouldn’t change it but you were right to change the SLS which looks fantastic, so maybe it will look ok and w all know you like your bright colours 👍
The best part of Tim is him actually USING his cars. Don’t let anyone tell you what to do with your cars. It’s awesome!

To each their own, but I would never buy a car that I didn’t feel comfortable with using the hell out of. I understand if people like to buy a car, and keep it pristine and rarely drive it, but you only live once. I love to drive though.
The front fenders are carbon if I’m not mistaken, they can sand down the louvers to expose the carbon and lacquer it once they paint it yellow and you’d have exposed carbon louvers on the fenders which would also make it more unique.

The weave might not be perfectly aligned because it was not supposed to be exposed.

@@roespeloes it isnt, that's why exposed carbon option on cars costs 200k or more. I think Christian Koenigsegg said that they need to align it perfectly so it looks good.
@@richardmille2955 exactly, that‘s what I thought. On the GT R the fenders are also in carbon fibre and the weave wouldn’t look nice if exposed.
100% agree with the boot lid being the same color as the car. While you're at it though, you should black out the door handles instead of that ugly chrome.

Yeah, if I had to pay all that extra cash to have it repainted I would't want to have it exactly like the other factory models. I would allso black out ALL the exterior chrome details, that would look so mutch better.
Paint the roll cage too. Would look neat in yellow.
Seeing the SLS and the GT side-by-side, I realize how much more beautiful the SLS truly is. It seems so much wider, so much more planted, stuck to the road. There's a definite grace to it that is completely missing with the GT.
GT is more of a brute/bruiser which is based on agression and road presence, whereas the SLS has more poise, style and elegance. One is as track focused as any Merc is going to be, the other is just the ultimate road car imo.
The colour certainly helps, but yeh the SLS is beautiful. Definitely more elegant than the GT but I just read comment above & he's right, it's not pretty but suits the cars purpose. Can't wait to see it in yellow, wouldn't be my choice but Tim's proved me wrong before

I agree you don’t realize how different they are. But as Tim said in a video or two ago they are very different animals built for very different purposes. I’d still have the sls over any other car in his collection. Lol

Definitely agree on the bootlid, the gloss black makes it look like an unfinished wrap job.
I like that you actually drive your cars, and I was REALLY hoping you'd spray the boot lid yellow!! Glad you are.
I'd also change the badges from silver to black... chrome on solar beam doesn't look quite right

You’re a madman for respraying a limited edition car as a collector! You’re definitely NOT the average collector and I love that! Eagerly awaiting the result of the respray!
He’s also never selling the car unless he goes bankrupt. So being limited and valuable is kind of irrelevant to him. His goal is to keep it forever and rack up the miles
Hey man, i’m kinda new to cars and modding and my interest keeps building.
Out of interest, would you have any idea how much it would cost to do a full respray on such a high end car like the GT black series?
The maintenance costs i’ve heard so far seem to more expensive than my actual car. I’m sure i heard him say a service for the Ford GT was somewhere in the region of £4,000. My head nearly fell off when he was charged £8,000 for the breaks being fixed. (I understand Ford later contacted him and explained he’d been charged double by accident and corrected the error - big honesty points to that specific dealership)
@@Raggandrist a respray in such a way the amg gt Bs will be going to get (I know shmee‘s not cheaping out and wants full perfection which I would do as well) will probably cost around 30-40.000€. I don’t know it but the work that will go into that is mind boggling. You need to sand down the original paint on every panel in every ever so slightly corner and put in hundreds of man hours into it to get a factory (or even better than factory) finish. I think shmee said that fhe respray of his G class in topaz skin cost around 12.000£ and for that it’s not necessary to sand down the panels. Also the g Wagon has much simpler bodywork. Maybe shmee will reply here and enlightens us with correct information!😎👍🏼

@@Raggandrist I’ve no idea how much that respect would cost, my guess would be about £10/20k. With high performance cars you have upgraded parts, so whilst the brakes are expensive it’s because they are a lot better than normal brakes. Also with limited edition cars the parts are limited which increases the costs of the parts. And the biggest thing is if someone has the money to buy one of these cars they can definitely afford to pay a few more quid with servicing and repairs

I admire your attitude to the mileage and value of these cars. After all they are made to be enjoyed and used so why not. Looking forward to seeing that beast on the ring.
I adore Tim for pulling the trigger on such decisions, using the cars like he owns them and is not just holding them for the next owner

I think you’ve got it spot on with the colour change. I’d leave the V8 badge red as I think it’ll work well against the solar beam yellow. Can’t wait to see the GT500 lined up in the Shmuseum
Your explanation of the break in process was spot on. I just bought an F90 M5 Competition LCI, just hit 1500 miles. Just did the first service, and just started beating on it. Well said Tim!
Very excited for the color change and I love how much he loves his cars and has such an attachment to them. It’s one of the biggest reasons I watch every video. Can’t wait to see the completed change. I imagine it’s going to look like a giant menacing bumblebee!
Good move on changing the color of the boot lid to solar beam, never liked having a secondary color done that way, reminds of those cheap imports.

I’m still contemplating the runners on the roof being in yellow… usually the black would blend in with the carbon roof, so it doesn’t look as strange.

With all the cutouts and vents it kinda reminds me of a TVR Sagaris, it's gonna look awesome in yellow, can't wait!

When you first got the SLS I was so sad you didn't get it in the sunbeam yellow but the purple/dark blue its in looks great. Then I heard your plan for the GT bl and its great 👍.
I like the way you create identities, personalities for your cars. They are more than things or items, they are an extension of you. It’s the same pride most take with watch’s etc.
I completely agree with you painting the bootlid yellow as well Tim, I never particularly liked that part of it, and it definitely will be even more unique now!

I like the GT Black series as is, if it were mine I'd probably keep it that way. That being said, I think it would look incredible, better even, in a bright yellow. Can't wait to see it.

Hats off for building and painting it as you wanted. Slightly surprised that Mercedes couldn’t do it through their personalisation programme. So good that it will be used. The premium car market is too affected by people who are allowed to buy cars, don’t use them and then sell for profit. Same with watches. Good to see you using the car. Be interested in a watch video as I think you collect those but appreciate this is very personal.
I actually prefer the black but next to the other shmeemobiles yellow is the ONLY choice

Oh he is a collector but he's just not the obsessive type of car collector who has to have everything in factory condition forever, and accepts that cars have to be driven and minor damages are part of the journey. He still cherishes his cars though and it is a collection but PPF on every car regardless of age is basically a must. I've considered even going down the route of PPF hot hatches and stuff I can eventually afford or maybe even a topaz skin / peelable paint just so I don''t have to worry as much about the original paint but kept my first car's paint in factory like condition for 3-4 years until things went south. I'd love to own classic cars and be able to drive and preserve their current condition for a while but not having a garage kinda sucks in UK weather

Feel like the C Black would look pretty good in a darker red. Would also balance about the number of blue vs red car and put the Black Series in each subtractive primary color.

The C is one car I'd leave as is. it just looks mean in white, it's not exactly unique though so expect he'll change colour. If he does, I agree with you about red

I don’t think he will change the badges to black at least not the star. He also said he wants to get the C63 BS logo back to chrome and I would also say that chrome on the logo looks better as the blacked out looks pretty tacky and cheap. It’s just one of those mods everyone that wants to look cool does

Satin gray is literally my fav colour,it's the colour i wanna wrap my best car in,solarbeam is cool but as a fan of grays in general id keep it like that.

hmm wow we totally thinking the same thing I was going to paint my trunk and roof runners in matching body color as well, decided to do that as soon as I seen the car reveal, it's the first step must do imo gives much cohesive look from behind. Ppl who like the gloss black would disagree but I think it looks better in one color. Can't wait to see your finished transformation makes me really excited...
I'm glad your changing the color and making it you're own. That means you're not going to sell it in 2 years and we are going to get many good videos of it. It's easy to tell what cars you are going to keep because you make them yours. The cars that aren't going to be around long are usually stock motors, ordinary paint and maybe gets a wrap just to make it yours with protection. Keep up the good work and really loving the other channel.

Great plan. The only suggestion I have is to only pain the rear portion of the boot lid along the ducktail hardline. This way your avoid paining the rails which might end up having issues over the long term ownership you plan.
