  • Welcome to #2 in the new Let's Talk series (changed the name from Q&A) where I share my thoughts on addiction, as highly suggested by comments under Let's Talk #1 (link below). This is a relaxed ASMR series that will either be whispered or soft spoken, often accompanied by a random ASMR trigger such as gum chewing, tapping, etc. But more importantly where I basically try to answer one or more questions, depending on the topic, left in the comments by viewers.

I had been drinking for three years ever since I was 15. I had drank to cope with depression that I was (and still do) go through. I literally drank lethal amounts of alcohol and I honestly did not care at the time. Today, however, I am proud to say that I am approaching 6 months of sobriety.

I've struggled with addiction since I was about 14 years old, and got to this day I fight my battles. It started with a sense of worthlessness due to some lack of parental guidance and my economic/social status, and after trying out a few drugs in high school I started to really suffer with what I had started.
To anyone suffering, it never really ends even after you get clean. But what I can say is that as you mature and as you learn to create healthy coping habits, you can live a perfectly normal and happy life, you just have to stay cautious. Addiction rears its ugly head at the most inopportune times, and you can relapse even ten years from sobriety if you're not careful. For whoever isn't doing too great, I wish you the best.

Addiction helps brings us to a happy place if only for a while. I feel I am most inclined to addictions when I'm at a lonely point in life. Some of us just have that addictive personality that never really goes away, (so I've heard) but I believe it to be true. It's like a yearning in my soul for something I know I shouldn't have because I wanna be "bad". And that brings me great satisfaction lol

The AA has an acronym which is very helpful for just about every addiction. The acronym is H.A.L.T, meaning being Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired, are risk factors for addictive behaviour. Anyone with addicitions (including myself) could learn a lot about their addictive behaviour by monitoring it at such moments and writing down whatever you figure out. These insights take a lot of time to sink in, but if you repeat this process on a day to day basis, you will eventually be more in control of your behaviour. It's actually a tried and true technique from cognitive behavioural therapy.

With most video games it's hard to just play for 15 minutes. It has nothing to do with it being addictive ( Though I can admit video games can be additive ). It's just not enough time to get your enjoyment out of it. It's like reading a book for only 10 minutes. You're just getting started by that time you don't want to put it down when you're just starting to get into it. For me if I play I'll play for at least an hour or 2. It's a reasonable amount of time to get your fill out of it.

Tori Fletcher If you have problems with alcohol in the future, you might want to look into AA. I actually think everyone could benefit from AA (or a program based on the same principles for people not addicted to alcohol). It's changed the lives of a lot of my family members. They're better people now, not just "not alcoholic".
Just in case it gets out of control, I hope you keep the idea in the back of your mind. I'm also prone to addiction, so I hope I take my own advice if I ever need to :(

As a fellow former smoker I can tell you that there is certainly a physical tolerance that must be built up in order to handle an entire pack of cigarettes in a 24 hour period. Similar to alcohol... one can't simply pick up a case of Corona, go to town and expect to feel fine in the morning unless there is considerable experience involved. I respect you for giving up smoking before it got to that point. Wish I could say the same for myself because quitting a pack a day was MUCH more difficult.

If it worries you, make sure you spend as much time as possible of your time online doing things you really enjoy (be it watching videos, chatting with people, whatever). Don't fall into the trap of 'surfing' without really doing anything. Addiction is all about cost. What do you lose to your addiction? That's the question to think about. Apart from that, don't stress too much, post high school life really is different.

Part of what I like so much about how ASMR makes me feel reminds me of how I felt using heroin. I have been clean for 8yrs now and am not saying ppl should go out and do heroin, I'm simply telling the truth about certain tingling sensations. My husband thinks I am a total weirdo since he doesn't experience asmr at all and I watch these videos after I put the kids to bed, but let me tell you I'd rather be weird than be dead. Interesting points on addiction... there may be some genetics involved, but a lot of addicts become addicted to substances that are inherently addictive; there are just some things that are designed to be addictive, no matter your predisposition. Also, with regards to the point on escapism, that's totally on point. Sometimes people have problems that they just have to escape from or medicate away. In such cases, it's probably better to address the problem head-on.

I think this video was very insightful. Resolution for addiction doesn't require the removal of the addictive substance, but a change in the people to choose to reject it. A change in our media to choose not to place drugs, sex, and violence on these glorified pedestals. You really speak to that and the importance of teaching our modern generation the importance of self control.
Addiction is not just one thing. It's mental, biological, and social...but so much more too.

The one thing you didn't touch on that I've found vital in stopping smoking is knowledge. When I first started smoking cannabis I was under the impression that it wasn't addictive. Years later, I found that going a day without it would result in nausea, shaking, hot/cold flashes, and vomiting (yay!).
Now, having done research and spoken with recovered addicts, I am able to successfully combat my problems. So I would add education to the list of changes we should bring about to society.

Tobacco is a purgative, your reaction was normal. I live in a culture now where gum chewing is "unhealthy" (causes acid reflex, e.g.) but this was a pleasant means of conveying your thoughts. Different. I'll be 56 this year and next have to work on unhealthy human relations at work & home -- must learn coping strategies. Alcohol was really hard to learn about and banish. (I drank to excess, smoked pot to excess -- can't handle 'em, they hadda go.) Thanks for this and I've subbed.

Yeah, the thing about video game addiction is that as people get older, they realize that outbursts just aren't acceptable, or they're better at finding save points, etc. I used to rage when I was 10-11 when my parents told me I had to stop playing. I grew out of it. I owe my parents a lot, after all.

I totally agree with u. When I was younger for a personal reason I was not allowed a computer in my house but I was 12 when I received my first computer, but threw junior high I found myself using my Xbox almost 8h a day but now in highschool I started to prompt myself for game design and graphics design. If your a big fan of video games turn it from a hobby to a career and you will be happy

The game bit really interested me. I think as a study it should be completely neutral. I personally have been edicted to online gaming for a few years, and then worked down to going days and some times weeks without any technology. I've worked though diagnosed depression as well without drugs so maybe i simply have a high recovery rate, but it definitely provides growth by moving through those rather then having them restricted from us. Quite interesting stuff! :3

I know when to stop drinking too. When I'm in the gutter. Everyone has different goals and intentions in using drugs, and "when to stop" is an opinion. I drink to disconnect from all of the pain and at least feel good for a few hours. Which is why I quit well over a year ago. But alas, the pain hasn't subsided.

Women straight or gay expierence this too. I am happily married w/ kids and have learned to incorporate (aka cope with) said addiction by involving my husband. Sometimes he is weirded out and sometimes not. Haha. The only better addiction must be exercise...I used replacement therapy w/ sex and food addiction (mainly sweets) to supress my heroin addiction. Been 'drug' free for over 7 years.

Agreed, I've spent most of my life as a gaming addict(19 now). My parents encouraged it if anything as it kept me busy.
I shook it last year, and I really wish I could tell you how. I remember doing a massive binge on Fallout NV(put a hundred hours in a week) and then just got burned out on gaming in general. Maybe because I modded the game to be punishing? Games with easy challenges, lots of rewards like WoW are very addicting, so playing things with little reward and lots of challenge worked?

Being stuck with only a laptop and nothing else helped me. It's hard to get addicted to games when your computer chugs like crazy any time it plays any 3d game. That's what broke mine. I only play a few hours on weekends anymore, and it seems healthy for the time being.

I used to be addicted to vicodin and other pills. I used to snort way too much, nine or ten a day. After 5 months of abuse and so many bottles emptied I couldn't keep count, I decided to quit, all on my own. I was sober about two years and recently gave in and tried oxy. Currently one month clean.
