Hagler may very well be the better fighter. But he was clearly out punched and out scored. He never hurt Ray, so where’s the controversy. Great victory for Sugar…period

Unfortunately for Hagler, he was a year or two past his prime. The Hagler that beat Hearns would have won this fight too, but he’s much slower here,…. I still think he did enough to at least earn a draw.

There's one specific punch that Leonard hit Marvin with in the 7th round that nobody talks about. Leonard's back is away from the camera and Hagler's head snaps back extremely hard! Right on the button as hard as he can hit! It had no effect on him whatsoever. An unbelievable right hand to his head! If you haven't seen it, you should look for it! In my opinion, Sugar Ray Leonard won this fight, outboxing Hagler and making him miss so much. I truly believe Hagler new he lost the fight. Just by the way he 'danced' around after the last bell. He didn't do that kind of stuff usually, so I think he was putting on a 'winning' face. I really love Hagler too! But Ray is my all time favorite next to Ali!🥊🥊

Hagler was my man I absolutely loved watching him fight and and literally break down and destroy his opponents but as much as I hate to admit it he lost to Leonard that night who in turn fought an absolutely perfect fight he was a very smart fighter and had worked out how to defeat the much stronger hagler put it in to plan and prevailed it is after all boxing it’s not just about strength stamina and durability ( which the great hagler has in abundance ) it’s about ring craft and skill Leonard was a very crafted fighter and he new the way to overcome haglers power

Hagler spent most of the night chasing after Leonard. Hagler was the undisputed defending middleweight champion, it's the challenger's job to bring the fight to the champion and leave no doubt who deserves the belt. Leonard made no real effort to win by KO or even TKO. His gameplan seem to be about winning by decision, or maybe hoping Hagler would get tired out from chasing after him for 10 rounds, and then go for the KO in the end (the strategy Ali used against Foreman). Leonard admitted afterward that he was not going to stand there and trade punches with Hagler. So he scored a lot of points by forcing Hagler to come after him, but sneakily landing a flurries of punches when Hagler wasn't ready. I don't know man, if he was able to knock Hagler down at least once using that catch-me-if-you-can strategy, Ok, give him the decisive win then, otherwise, just avoiding the other guy but landing more punches to end up with more points, I don't know. Hagler should've known that was going to be Leonard's plan, because during negotiations, Leonard wanted a larger ring.

Yep for sure. People who say Hagler won this fight based on the work he did in the last 2/3 of the fight completely ignore he probably lost 4 of the first 6 rounds. With a crowd becoming increasingly impressed with Leonard’s performance and sensing an upset, it became very difficult for Hagler to win any close rounds. This fight was close…6 to 6 or 7 to 5 either way. Hagler was not robbed…fight was too close for anyone to say that.

When I first saw a video of this fight, which was over a year ago, I thought that Leonard was the marginal winner. But, after watching more videos of this fight, I think that it was a draw. Something like 50:50. But, in general, Hagler was the more powerful man. Leonard was swifter.

Sugar was on the run the entire fight...for a reason.
His corner would call out at the 30 sec mark to the end of the round...so Sugar could do his flurry of hands at the end to wow the crowd/judges.
^^ I think that's why they gave it to him...but I personally think Hagler just straight up won it by being the aggressor for the majority of the fight.

Sugar Ray knew he could not get in and go toe to toe with Hagler so his strategy was stick and move stay on the outside as much as possible to avoid Haglers knock out punches. Hagler says a lot he was a sissy and would not get in and fight, well in the end Boxing is a strategy sport and Ray had the correct strategy to win he knew he could not win going toe to toe with Hagler so he improvised a brilliant strategy to win.

A very biased video with 90% of the good moments from Leonard and very little of the mid to end fight dominance from Hagler. Leonard counter-punched most of the fight and hung on and spoiled when Hagler got on top. I watched the fight live and a number of times over the years and Hagler should have retained his title. Leonard show-boated with a shuffle and did the flurry of punches that "tickled" Hagler and nothing else. The crowd fell for it and subsequently so did 2 of the judges.

Hagler simply couldn’t catch Ray and when he did he never hurt Ray.
Watching at .25 speed it was also more noticeable that Hagler was bothered by Rays (landed) shots. Not necessarily HURT, but Rays shots obviously stung. SRL might not have been the “Hands of Stone” or “Hitman”, but Hagler felt Rays shots. (SRL was 33-1 with 21 KOs going into the Hagler fight).
The thing that stood out the most to me after watching the entire fight in SLO MO and MUTED was how many shots Hagler missed. A LOT.
Secondly was how bothered Hagler was by Rays landed shots.
But SRL easily outpointed MH in this one for the UD victory. Love it or Hate it.... the judges got this one right.
I’ve been watching all of the fights between the 4 kings at .25 speed and MUTED. Even with fights that ended in KOs it’s been interesting. But classic fights that went to decision (especially SD) have been particularly interesting.

Brain beat brawn. Hagler was a natural middleweight , he was in his comfort zone and should have beaten leonard easily.. Leonard hearns duran and Benitez were all superb world class pound for pound magnificent fighters. Yes hagler was a fab middleweight but he never went up in weight . Plus if hagler was past his peak then so was leonard . Leonard had everything hagler had plus faster hands and a better boxing brain.
