I can't remember it. Some newer hardware revision of this router from TM is not working with tftp. If you have tried different time and confirm pressing the correct button, most likely you got a not working version.

It is a basic networking knowledge that WAN and LAN should be in a different subnet or else the routing will not work. You can see other basic and advance OpenWRT tutorials on the channel.

Hello. This is the basic of OpenWRT. You need to access LuCI with the new IP address to save the change, or it will revert to default configuration. See openwrt.org/faq/change_lan_ip

Yes, you will be able to use MY Unifi by folllowing the PPPoE VLAN configuration video. However it is not recommended to install OpenWRT on the router if you are not familiar with OpenWRT configuration.

It is a snapshot version so LuCI (which you installed manually) will gone after reset. You can build the firmware for DIR-842 on your own and include LuCI during build, and it won't be lost when performing a reset.

Hi, to stop the ping, you can press Ctrl and C key together. If the router is connected to another router via the WAN port, you can just run opkg update and then opkg install luci to install it

IPv6 should be disabled, that's why it couldn't fetch the packages with opkg update. (wan6 under interfaces)

After connected to SSH with WAN and LAN cable plugged in, run this command: opkg update && opkg install luci and it will get the job done.
