  • Why I Dislike Qantas: A Rant… Part 1
QANTAS has been thrusted to the forefront of customer gripes ever since borders were opened. A lot of these are relating to how they are failing to meet expectations outside of the flying experience. From difficulty in using our frequent flyer points, to trying to use up our COVID-era flight cancellation credits, and even something as simply as chasing after points owed after flights.
It is as if the management is making the process as difficult as possible, in hope that we would just give up. In these 2 videos, I will dive into what has pissed me off so much about the airline to the point I just wanted to get rid of my frequent flyer points. And this explains a little why I am criss-crossing the country in business class - where available.

As a former employee at Qantas, i couldn't agree more. I flew from Perth to Auckland a couple of weeks ago and the food was barely edible.
Sadly i was in such a state due to the nature of my travel that i was forced to endure vinegar like wine. I saw Alan Joyce at Melbourne airport (awaiting a flight to Syd)...and wanted to verbally abuse him. Ok and more. Let's hope when he goes things improve.

As much as we all like to lay all our hated onto AJ, sometimes I feel the board allowed this to happen as well. He was after all answering to those above him. They wanted numbers, he delivered. Its just easier to flame him because it is his face we see, not his bosses. That's really no incentive for QF to change their offerings since there is no competition.

I am hoping their direction turns within the next 1-3 years. I agree with all of your comments. I do 99% international travel. Possibly 30-40% business. There is no way I would pay for a business seat. It's always upgrades or reward seats, as I am a high-tier member. The whole business product does not come close to the value they sell for. Used to be a Platinum Qantas fanboy but last year I had so many issues with them, I swapped to Virgin where I'll hit Platinum later this year. Their phone service is abominable (spent 4 hours trying to fix a connecting flight that they wanted us to travel back in time to make - even gave the girl the exact flights and dates to make it work and she still had to call me back multiple times), their service levels are dropping and the straw that broke the camel's back for me was their changed flight credit policy: if you cancel a flight, there's not just a fee (for us $120/pax), not just having to spend the whole credit on one booking, but they also hit you with a significantly higher fare than if you were to make a new cash booking. Just flying BNE-SIN for two adults was going to cost anything up to an additional $2500 on top of what it would cost for a new cash fare! They gouge their customers at every turn these days and we get nothing back for it. And this doesn't even begin to cover how they treat their staff... I won't support such a business.

So your main gripe is about the frequent flyer program, to which I say big deal. The majority of Qantas passengers do not take to the sky dozens of times per year and do not ever reach your silver or gold or higher status - all of that is just a perk for the privileged few.
For me and I would say the majority of customers who choose Qantas, what matters above all else is that we know we have the world's most capable and best trained pilots up front and that we are secure in flying with the world's undisputed safest airline and that's why Qantas rightly charges a premium for its service.

that is absolute nonsense. Another load of BS the marketing campaigns have conned Aussies into believing. Maybe that was once the case, but no more. Aircraft don't crash these days because of Boeing and Airbus making better planes. Apart from the 737 Max. And most airlines have great pilots, its not something just for Qantas. The fact is Qantas fares are always higher flying internationally than better competitors, and the Qantas product is worse. And flying Virgin within Australia is always better than Qantas. Why would anyone in their right mind fly Qantas when you can fly Etihad, Singapore, Malaysian, Japan, and manyyy other airlines for cheaper than Qantas internationally. They offer better products than Qantas anyway. Qantas is nothing less than sh*t and an embarrassment to Australia, and has been for years.

hey ryan did you mean to drop this one at midnight? anyways a great video as always and i appreciate your humour! Interesting that you are positive about cabin crew, i find Qantas crew to be quite 'stoic' if you like. I had a flight to Adelaide earlier this year with Qantas and when they saw I had an action camera and was a vlogger (even though I wasn't filming much I wasnt reviewing that particular flight) they came at me! 'You must not film any staff! It's a matter of security!!' which is not a reaction I have had on any other flight where i've had my camera in view. Already I booked flights this year with Qantas using points for Premium Economy Singapore to Melbourne and TWO DAYS later I was told those seats were no longer available as they had changed the aircraft. I was now in Economy, and IF I WANTED the points difference refunded or to cancel the flight (I did the latter) I needed to call. ANd then my points refund never happened until 4 weeks later when I called them up again to ask where my points were. The QFF points can be useful overseas but if you are coming in or out of Australia, that flight is tricky at best and good luck looking for business class seats. and they limit seats on easy routes, London is their hub and if you are travelling anywhere else in Europe, they want you routed through London as you go further and therefore use more points. There interface on the website (which is better than their app) is designed to limit the number of places you can enter as a destination or departure point - departure points are incredibly limited. However call up and for an extra 7500pts or whatever it is to use the phone places are available that u can't access online. Using 'multi-city' can also help you get around the limitations. For example I flew Dakar to Dubai on Emirates BC with QFF 75000 points great flight, wonderful crew. Dakar does not appear in the first line as a departure point though. I booked a rewards seat Melbourne to Sydney last year in the first line and Added Dakar to Dubai in the second! Sorry I am ranting. But I will say - for me Velocity is now a better program, not as many airlines but Etihad, Singapore, Qatar - to name a few are great airlines. in summary - great video!

QF flew ADL SIN and even then it was a measley 3x per week, and that flight wasnt even an ADL terminator, it was a SYD ADL SIN. CBR has literally NO international demand. SQ and QR have tried and COVID has put a stop to that. DRW SIN was supposed to happen with the E190 in Jun 2023, and that news quietly fizzled away with no development. He ran QANTAS like he did Jetstar. Great for the shareholders, bad for customers. His bosses were obviously very happy with the results, that's why he stayed on for so long.

@@ryansofly IMHO not a long-term approach to your customers. And if you upset your customers, as they have, the inevitable result is no fares being paid.
When I was still working, I was shipped around the world via Qantas, and would swear by them in all the ways that matter. My last experience was on a return Jetstar to Tassie. What a jarring difference.

@@John.0z sadly, QF is at the top of the OZ airline food chain. They really have no incentive to give us more.

      @@ryansofly You may be right.
I can only hope that the Qantas board - who have done such a dreadful job for the last decade or so - manage to put someone with a brain into the role next time.
After they chose and stuck with Joyce, I don't hold a lot of hope.
