    Hey.. Helpful video! My husband was struggling with the starter on his A, and watching you go through your own frustrations here led him to the answer he needed! I can hear that familiar pop pop out there in the field, and he is walking on air right now, happy as can be! It's sort of like having a helpful neighbor that lives about 1,300 miles away.. We appreciate that you took the time to post this. 👍 Thank you!

    It seemed to turn over fine after you cleaned it up, but all I kept thinking was you should make sure the mating surface from the starter to the whatever the equivilent to the bell housing is clean. I am not a John Deere guy, with exception of my No 5 mower, but I know that is something on the 8n you need to keep clean for grounding. But, again, I think you are fine there. I would agree that the magneto is probably the issue after you changed it, but you need to check for spark to confirm. And I do believe you are correct that you can bench test them. I think I remember seeing videos on that when I was doing some research for a '56 Gravely walk-behind I have. One little thing that has stuck with me from my sports car racing days is only change one thing at a time. You need to know what made an impact vs. what did not.

    Hey Bud, I would suspect mag as well. Take it off, put it in your vice, hook a wire and plug up to it, and click it over fast by hand. They are impulse driven, so it wont take alot of pressure. Before that though.. pull the cap off while mag is on tractor, and clean the points. moisture and build up will cause issues quickly! Take Care. BTW, I've got the head off of my A and I am replacing the Manifold gasket right now. I should have a video posted soon!

    The starter is turning over fine; should have checked the spark to begin with. More than likely the plugs are fouled, and it's flooded. Pull the plugs clean them and check the quality of spark the mag is putting out. Might not hurt to replace the plugs as well, after continued flooding the spark will degrade. If you have a strong spark than your magneto is OK . Have you checked the compression of both cylinders?

    Loose bushings, especially the center bushing clearance are kind of important if they are too loose it will allow the armature to drag and the cranking amperage required goes up considerably

    It came with 2- 6 volt batteries to make a 12 v with more push. The 730 took 4 6 volts for 24 v

      I was wondering if that would matter.

      One good 12 V is all that is needed!

    Try converting one of your Wico C mags to a distributor since you are more comfortable with a distributor.

    Check your ground connections and both battery cables for corrosion

    Hello I dont know if you have but take the spark plug out connect the spark plug wire to spark plug ground it and see if it has spark. It's to bad were to far apart I'd stop by and get it going with you. I'm thinking it has points and they might need to be cleaned. Dont sell it that's a nice old johnny. Is there a way talk with you phone? I don't know much about this. Great video see you then.

    Try closing the petcocks. Theyre not really meant to be used for starting on the later models. They usually won't start with them open

    • @HumbleAcres
      @HumbleAcres  Před 3 lety +1
