  • After hitting his drive into the penalty area at the par-4 seventh hole at THE PLAYERS Championship, Rory McIlroy and playing partners, Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland, confer over the correct placement for the penalty drop. After reviewing the footage, it's determined that McIlroy took relief in the correct spot and went on to make double bogey.

The PGA TOUR heads to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida this week for the 50th anniversary of the THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Defending champion and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler returns to TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course looking to become the first golfer to go back-to-back at THE PLAYERS after his impressive win last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. This was his seventh victory on TOUR since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. He has also claimed four top-10s across his five starts so far this season. Rory McIlroy will also be in the field this week. He is without a top-20 this season but will take confidence from his victory here in 2019. Viktor Hovland returns to TPC Sawgrass following two straight top-10 finishes at THE PLAYERS, including a solo third last season. Others to look out for are 2021 PLAYERS winner Justin Thomas, 2023 U.S Open champion Wyndham Clark, Hideki Matsuyama and Xander Schauffele.

But depends on the where the camera is, if it was behind where the ball landed then it can make it look like he landed farther up than it was or if it was ahead would look like it went in farther back. You can see the stripes are much wider and looks like the camera was pretty straight across from where ball went in @8:16, but later when Rory is at his ball the stripes appear much thinner and you can see camera is now much further up the fairway shooting back at Rory making it seem like he dropped the ball too far back.

Reading the comments is interesting because it is a perfect example of people seeing the same footage and hearing the same audio but having very different take on what took place. Nothing that either Hovland or Spieth said was contradicting Rory. I thought it was clear that they both wanted to correct ball placement so Rory wouldn't be penalized later. I thought it was a little weird that Spieth was so adamant that “everyone I’m hearing from is saying it was below the line”. First of all, who are all these “adamant” people he’s talking to in the middle of the fairway, and how do they know so “adamantly” seeing as how that side is long, and so steep and narrow that no one was standing or sitting anywhere near that area when the ball landed. After seeing how narrow the distance was between the water and the red line, there is no way anyone had a vantage point that would allow them to have an “adamant” response to where that ball landed. If anything, the height that the ball bounced is much more adamant that it did not land below the red line. I didn’t realize how steep that slope was until Rory walked to the edge of the water. It’s a good 3 foot slope. There is no way that bounces vertically enough to be seen above the Fairway horizon if it hit below that red line.

He had already measured and dropped before the video started at the drop site. You are right, the point of entry is the entire crux. That is what they are trying to determine. Ultimately they are going to have to use a "best judgement" standard since they were not able to see the landing spot and entry point.

At 6:22 you can see the area quite clearly. Can't imagine the ball would bounce much if it landed left of red line, at least not high enough for the camera to pick it up from where it was located. In fact left of line appears steeper, is likely softer so with a hooking right to left shot hitting a soft steep right to left slope there would likely be no bounce at all. Rory probably made the right call.

Look at the red line the bunker and the fairway at about the 1:14 mark. The fairway is at least two feet higher than the bunker. The bunker is about six feet higher than the red line. At the .06 to .07 mark you can see the ball bounce as high as the fairway after hitting the ground to the left of the bunker. If the ball would have hit the ground to the left of the red line, it would have been a huge bounce. That seems unlikely since it’s thick rough and as close as the redline is to the water it would be softer there. So I believe Rory is correct.

Rory does seem to be taking a pretty liberal drop from the point where the ball crossed the red line. Is that really 2 club lengths to get that drop so far up the slope?
As for the question is how he proceeded correct? The ball bounced on the bank of the hazard and then crossed over the hazard line and went into the water. That much is clear from the video of his tee shot. You can see the ball hop up before it enters the water. It is a bit disappointing that the discussion is about getting it right so if someone calls it in after the fact he won't be penalized further.
