One of the worst architectural decisions was to design the wettest, warmest room into a place where there are no windows and an insufficient extractor fan. Bane of my life in multiple hotel and rental accommodations. The wall stains look like damp/steam stains more than anything as a result. On a different note, the more I see your videos, the more I realise that places like Premier Inn have upped the affordable hotel game considerably, and many other traditional brands are now left behind, running their business on their old reputation only.

Those stains are not from the bathroom, there wouldn’t be enough humidity to condensate the walls outside the bathroom that badly and even if somehow they did they could have been cleaned off...

ADD wallpaper to this same scenario is another offense they often engage in. so now you have mold peeling and condensation that cannot be removed from a sealed box.

Thing is, mistakes and messes happen in life but the real test is how a hotel deals with a complaint. Tim should have complained and seen if they transferred him to another room, offered a discount (or, better, an upgrade) or just told him to like it or lump it.

There's a phone in the elevator lobby in case you get locked out of your room (particularly at night!). The shelf in front of the mirror with the sockets in the bedroom is useful not only for the kettle but also for hair and makeup - nice to see hotels doing that, in previous years there was no where with a mirror near a plug to dry your hair.

Sadly Hilton has not been a luxury brand for a long while now. Standards have become very inconsistent between properties. I stay around 100 nights per year in hotels and have expectations. Tim I would have walked out of that room immediately and requested a change. As a Hilton Honors member I’m shocked by the standard of the room you were allocated.

.if you’ve travelled extensively you will realise that this hotel was a joy and an oasis..back in days of old, they would show you a room and if you liked it you would agree to stay. Today we all book up online and accept the panorama that will greet us upon entering the room we will accept..or dependent upon our disposition we will gripe and moan to try and get a better room or a refund..

Back in the 70's The Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London was the business very luxurious. They had an amazing club in the hotel called the 007 which was of course James Bond theme and it was open to non residents as well as guests. Free entry, resident singers, friendly staff who wore posh uniforms and a great atmosphere. Only drawback was the price of drinks. Every drink cost 1 pound no matter what you ordered (in 1977 that was a lot of money). I remember starting rate for a room was 49 pounds a night. Way out of my league. Just enjoyed the summer of 1977 visiting the 007 club with my best friend every Saturday night. Great memories!

It’s weird, because as someone who travels a lot it’s come to my attention that even though the English are among the friendliest people with the most hospitality, the hotels often are really run down and in poor state, in a way that really sets the country apart from others.

    • @Tee_Leaf
      @Tee_Leaf Pƙed rokem +13

As a Brit that travels a lot, British people staying in hotels absolutely don't respect the buildings, I have stayed with co-workers and friends in hotel rooms and they have thrown their cases against the walls chipping them, washed their socks in the kettle (yes this is a real thing people do and its fucking gross), had a friend store around 100 cans of beer in the bath which cased damage to it... I would hate to be a hotelier in the UK and would probably go bankrupt fixing stuff constantly.

I've only stayed in a Hilton once. It was the Munich City Hotel and as it was a special occasion (25th wedding anniversary) I booked an executive room which gave access to the executive lounge which provided free breakfast, snacks and drinks (including some alcoholic drinks). The Hotel itself was also very impressive and what you would expect from a Hilton Hotel. However, like you I found the room itself very disappointing. Though spacious with a very comfortable bed, the decor was very worn and tired. There were stains on the matress, one of the chairs was broken (I actually cut my arm on it!) and the carpet was strangely wrinkled! The restaurant was also very disappointing with a very limited and expensive. Bearing in mind this was over 10 years ago a 'Hilton Burger' was €30 and a bottled beer was €8. The room was €250 per night which I thought was excessive. This did not however spoil my trip and we spent several days touring Munich, Salzburg and Nuremberg. I flew with BA from Heathrow but back then your ticket price included luggage and snacks which made it very good value.

I stay almost exclusively at Hilton’s. There’s many different types of Hilton, each with their own benefits and selling points. That is a bog standard hotel.
If you want to be impressed, stay at a Curio property. The Gantry in Stratford is a nice one. Hamptons have free breakfast, Doubletree buy up older properties and are quite basic, but you get a warm cookie on arrival.
Garden Inn Hilton’s have outdoor space, and usually free parking. I highly recommend staying at Hilton Silverstone Garden Inn, it’s surprisingly cheap if you don’t go on a race day, or before a race day. You can get track facing rooms which are awesome and there’s even a real F1 car in the lobby, and next door in the shop. I show the hotel briefly in one of my videos called “The Not Much Happens Audit”.

I stayed in a Hlilton on my Honeymoon on St. Petersburg Beach, Florida years ago and it was beautiful! Round building with revolving restaurant on the top floor. Everything in the suite we had was wonderfully clean zand sparling. Had the super thick bathrobes/dressing gowns and a jacuzzi tub just a bit smaller than the pool (at least it seemed that way. Had a wonderful time in the bar & restaurant and it was literally on the beach so compared to this one? I think they charged too much for tge condition it's in, imo.

Waldorf Astoria is also owned by Hilton. There's one in Edinburgh that is very impressive. It's massive and the building it is in used to be a train station in Victorian times. May be worth a trip up north if you can get a good rate.

Double tree by Hilton Milton Keynes suite is one that has 3 tvs in the room including one in the bathroom, very reasonably priced usually at around 130 a night including breakfast. It's built into the MK Don's Stadium though so it's a long walk to your room sometimes!

A lot of times that dirt on the wall is just oil residue that has seeped into the paint and discoloured it meaning it can’t be cleaned off so the hotel would have to paint over the marks

Not if the walls were stained like that. Unforgivable really. I stayed in a Hilton (in Leicester) with work several years ago so I paid nothing but I was totally underwhelmed. the "lids" are coasters. The walls show evidence of poor painting job and lack of maintenance. Heavn forbid they close down a hall to re-doo rooms and give them some TLC. I think managers should be forced to spend a night in every room. That frayed light fixture is unforgivable and I bet the maid is given no ownership of seeing it put right. I give a little grace to maids as many hotels I have stayed in around London demand that the workers flip a room very quickly. I have seen some of the low rate equipment they make the staff use and wonder how anyone can get rugs clean with those little happy face vacuums
