Great video SBSC. Very helpful for when I do my own oil changes on my 2019 1290 SD GT coming in April. Great detail, and well done. Yes, use gloves folks. Yes, change oil seals on oil filter cap, and both oil plugs, every time. For the cost/benefit, even if they look fine, change them just to make sure you have a perfect seal with fresh units. Yes, a little clean oil on the new seals helps to ensure they do not bind when being installed and that they seal best. Yes, pre-soaking/loading oil filters is recommended in many cases as it allows the oil pressure to build more quickly, minimizing potential seconds of dry running at start up. Keep in mind that most engine wear can occur at start up, and is one of the main benefits of synthetic oil, where it "sticks" to the top end better than non synthetic.
Regarding the choice of oil, drifting from OEM recommended oil may lead to warranty coverage issues, though if oil manufacturers specs meet or exceed the OEM, one can expect the engine to be safe and sound, and difficult for bike warranties to be voided legally. Always confirm with your dealer, and their manufacturers regional representatives, and get a statement in writing whether non OEM oil will impact warranty. Most will likely state that as long as oil meets or exceeds OEM, warranty will be fine. Others that don't, then you know you have to stay with OEM oil (regardless of whether fair or not).
Great video, and no apologies for my detailed rant...it is what I do. :)

Damn you got the 2019 model? I just ordered mine 2 weeks ago 2020 1290R ,I wanted the orange and dark blue model, they "Mission Cycle" said they found one over week ago, so naturally it didn't go through. Salesman told me that should be ready pick up this Thursday or Friday. Since this bike shop is over 1.5 hour's away on highway from my home, I either got take back roads properly break it in. Going at constant speed , don't think good way break it in. Delivery told me $300. looks like once I purchase the bike from them I won't be seeing them again. I can see first service costing me much more with them, also I bitched about jug motorex costing $159. you must use it or warranty is void if you get engine issue. Changing oil once I hit about 150 miles, that's where all metal shaving begin. Hope your happy with 2019,cheers🇨🇦

Very clear and to the point thanks. even looking at the manual i did not see what the oil level should be (it refers to mark A, B, C but does not refer to the small notches) this really helped.

Great video simple, quick, straight to the point. I’ve always run Mobil 1 in all my dirt bikes, street bikes, cars, lawnmowers, UTV…basically anything with an engine. I do however run Castro GTX in my 05 CRF 450 crank case but Mobil 1 in the motor. Amsoil is great stuff just not as easy and convenient to find like Mobil 1.

KTM kiss the money good bye for me. Going do my first oil change when I get her home about 100+ miles. That's when you have all metal shaving. Good video, to the point. Cheers from Ajax, I heard you say Canadian buying it at Mission Cycle, and I live 5 kilometers from Gp bikes, sold out.

Although I do own a Superduke GT I do miss the simplicity of the Japanese oil changes where it's just mainly one drain plug and one screw on full-flow oil filter. No messing around with cleaning secondary filters and cartridge primary filters.

You can´t compare the size of a 4 cylinders and 2 cylinders, small block you have to put everything together as you can, drain, filter and magnet, i prefer this system, more clever and thinking on the engine durability.

hey man... perfect video, not to vague, not too long...exactly all the details needed to do the job. Perfect.
Thank you Sir! Hope the leg gets better.... I missed the 600 mile service on my '17 1290 Super Duke GT due to bad timing
to a moto road trip; couldn't get the bike in for service...ooops. Now I'm way over, gonna do the change myself, then
take it in for the service to have other stuff and the computer reset, hopefully not void my warranty.
I heard these motors really like an extended break in period, so 1200 miles on the break in oil, though not ideal,
isn't my big concern but voiding the warranty...hmm. But I should've done the oil change before the trip anyway.
Water under bridge now...hopefully not too much metal in the oil.
Was gonna buy the motorex oil too, but you say Amsoil is much better, and cheaper...I always here good comments
on Amsoil, but if I don't use Motorex, concerned about warranty for that as well, if they ask for my proof of KTM approved
parts for my self service, prior to visit.
Much appreciate you effort to put out an informative video. I watched a service shop video, promoting their great service
while doing a 1290 R, and their video wasn't as clear or visible as yours, and they didn't mention the torque specs, etc...
    Nice Job brother!
    Cheers

Anyway, I am planning on buying one but a little bit concerned about the maintenance. Will it void the warranty if I do my own maintenance like oil change and stuff? What is the other regular maintenance I need to do on this bike? And when is the valve check on this bike?

    • @CanadianBigGame
      @CanadianBigGame  Před 5 lety +1

It's different in different countries. Here in Canada we are allowed to do Preventitive maintenance without voiding Warrenty. Without checking thr manual. For valves most bikes are around 30m km's.

Why Ansoil over Swiss made Motorex..?
FYI: Mobil 1 - Mobil is the only oil company and brand that I know that has been involved in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of synthetic base stock and synthetic oils since the 1960’s to this day.
They actually make all the different types of base stocks covering Group I, II, III, IV & V from Conventional Mineral to Synthetic.
I believe the Mobil 1 family is the best synthetic oil as this is what Mobil have been doing for over 40 years - sort of “homegrown” synthetic engine oil!
