      Funny how the solution for BMW is just try to cram more power from 1L.
      KTM says, nah, we'll make the engine bigger.

    • @InsanitiesBrother
      @InsanitiesBrother Před 2 měsíci

      @@exothermal.sprocket BMW have a larger range though. They got the R1300GS which is slower than the M, but has more torque. Then they got the K1600 which has more than the GS and more torque than the KTM. Of course, that is MUCH heavier. Just pointing out the diversity of options.
      I am on an old KTM GT 2017 and nothing quite replaces it. I like the Idea of the 1290SA but it's got less power. I want MORE mid-top not less without losing any of the bottom.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@InsanitiesBrother Well, BMW have done just about all they can do with that 1L unless they want to go direct fuel injection and turbocharging. I get that all of this is cross-platform powertrain sharing. The automotive industry does this everywhere. Yet, I'm weary of the 14,000 rpm touring engines. Give us displacement and electric-like torque from low RPM, and wide ratio gears. That's what highway engines are supposed to be. Fine! Keep your 160 horsepower, but give me torque so I don't have to do 130 MPH to use that horsepower.

    • @averagemoto

      @@tomserbaducci8559 I agree, as much as all of these bikes cost nowadays it is ridiculous that there aren't more to demo or test ride before deciding. Finding a bike that is pre-owned with really low miles and a few years older is the better move in my opinion.

    7:05 the KTM has the potential to gap the XR even more but the fact it already gaps it with stock gearing is impressive, the KTM is geared insanely high, the XR 6th gear, red line is 175 mph, the KTM is 193 mph, according to gearing commander. • @mathias6423
    @mathias6423 Před 8 měsíci +2

    Now that the Super Duke GT "Gen2" has pretty much the exact same engine that the Super Duke R has, the top register in the higher revs has more power than the gen 1 engine had, the gen 1 engine was somewhat downtuned from the R engine. So for a V-twin the Super duke engine is very strong in the top compared to most other V-twin engines.
    So those extra horsepower combined with a lot more torque and even some kgs lighter than the S1000XR makes the Super Duke GT Gen 2 a faster bike than the BMW. Also the S1000XR even though better than before it still has those vibrations in motorway speed where you do not want them.
    It has become less obvious since they have added a lot more rubber mounting in the bars and pegs but it is still there and you do not have that in the same way with the Super Duke GT.
    Also the riding position on the GT is a slightly more aggressive which I like a lot more, less weight on your a$s and less windblast since you are leaning slightly more forward into the wind which is much more comfortable when touring.
    The only thing I think BMW does better than KTM is reliability, even though BMW still is a euro brand and does not have that awesome reliability of the Japanese bikes it is still somewhat better than KTM.
    I would feel more "safe" riding a BMW around Europe on a long trip than on a KTM that is just how it is, there is more problems on a KTM if you look on statistics than BMW. I think BMW is a bit more expensive on services than KTM though but I could be wrong about service costs between the two ?
    Personally I have had much more problems with KTM than on BMW, my friends as well. KTM for me, is more fun to ride on though
    PM. The 6th gear on the Super duke engine has always been kind of an overdrive gear, it is for very high speed cruising. Many times when going 60-70 mph (100-120km/h) I have found that the 6th gear on the Super Duke is useless, it runs better at that speed on 5th gear weirdly enough. So the 6th gear is not that strong if you are not going crazy speeds, autobahn cruising.

    I really wanted a SDGT, but the ADV ergonomics, for me personally, are just too good to give up that I just had to pick the Super Adventure instead. Oh no, I only get 160hp and extra torque for my STREET sport touring fun machine, what shame. haha Love these bikes.

    I think this class of tarmac only adventurey, sporty, bikes should be called GT bikes as a class. Like GT cars they're usually based on faster, lighter, significantly more hardcore models with concessions made for comfort and range while still being very capable performance machines

      @@jonasbaine3538 thanks for that, my arthritic body is no good for S1000RRs and I don’t like the XR because of the chain. I commute 450 miles a week over only 3 days, and I’ve not washed my RT since the beginning of November. In fact the dealer washed it! I tried the XR, and I liked it, but it’s not practical enough for me. A colleague in the office commutes on one from Gloucestershire (into London). She needs a heated jacket, gloves, socks etc. I just use X-bionic underwear, and Icebreaker Merino wool. I’m never cold on my RT.
      I wish I was young again!

      So my Buddy uses his Triumph 900-GT Pro, never an issue, Runs perfect with over 9k miles.
      He would love his KTM for more spirited riding, but it’s always sub par liability 👎
