Russian A380 / 747 - The Super Jumbo That Never Got Built.

This aircraft by all accounts looked like a cross between an A380 and Boeing 747, but was also totally bonkers. It had extra features like escalators and could drink liquid gas inflight through a guzzling straw.
If you love aviation, then you know that the A380 is one of the coolest aircraft ever built. With two levels the plane can carry 555 passengers, or up to 800 if the aircraft was completely economy.
Airlines looking for a huge airframe to fly a long distance could choose between the A380, or the original queen of the skies, the Boeing 747.
However, did you know that there was a third option? A Russian…A380 Super Jumbo?
Introducing the Sukhoi KR-860.
Originally revealed to the world at the 2001 paris airshow. Its name, Sukhoi KR-860, is made up of two - Sukhoi refers to the manufacture, KR means Kryla Rossii, which in engish is “wings of Russia” and the 860 refers to the total amount of passengers this aircraft was built to carry.
Sukhoi was a Russian aerospace firm that also builds a multitude of fighter aircraft for the military and a natural choice for new passenger aircraft.
They didn’t however actually build a real KR-860, bur rather a static 1/24 model to showcase their concept and raise awareness.
The real aircraft would be 80 meters long, with a wingspan of 88 meters, with the wings folding up to allow access to airport gates much like the Boeing 777X.
Compared to a Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, the aircraft was over 12 meters longer than a 747 and 15 meters longer than an A380. So it was positively huge!
It would have been powered with either GE engines, Pratt and Witnee, or with eight Kuznetsov NK-93 engines and would have a range of around 15,000 km (9,321 mi; 8,099 nmi). Next to an airbus a380 and boeing 747, the plane
This is where it gets even cooler. There were actually three different models of the KR-860 proposed.
The first was your standard passenger version that could carry 860 passengers across two levels in three classes, or over 1000 if the whole aircraft was economy. I think today it would have been a bit less than the 800 as back then they never imagine lie-flat beds or even entire private suites like onboard the A380. But there still would have been plenty more room onboard for more passengers
The 2nd type of aircraft was your standard freighter version. But like other designs thrown about in their era, like the Lockheed super transport which we will get to another time, it could carry full containers. As in, the containers you see on boats and the back of trains, without being de loaded. There was even a rumour that traincars would be able to be loaded into it without coming off tracks… wouldn’t that be a sight!
The third type was a petrolim gas variant, from remote Russian oil fields. What bonkers about this design is that the aircraft would have been able to tap the gas, whilst in flight, to power the aircraft. This would mean that the plane could effectively fly for free by sipping away on its cargo.
But it gets even better.
Passengers would be seated on two decks. The lower wider deck would have passengers arranged in a 12-abreast seating configuration with three aisles (perhaps 3x3x3x3), a first for commercial aircraft, and the upper deck would have 9 seats abreast with two aisles.
With a load of 1000 passengers onboard, the aircraft would need a way to unload them quickly and effectively at airports… using escalators. The aircraft design had three escalators built into the hull, one at the front of the aircraft, one in the middle and one at the end that quickly transported passengers either on or off, whilst at the same time using up to three jet bridges.
Why did it never fly?
In the end, like many things, it is all about money.
he concept for the aircraft began in the 1990s with a forecast programme cost of US$10 billion (early published figures were US$4-5.5B),, or in today's money, $15 billion USD, and called for the first aircraft to be built before 2000. With an estimated price per unit of about US$160-200 million (an earlier published estimate was US$150 million).
Considering that it cost Airbus $25 Billion USD over 15 years to make the A380, we know the real cost would have been much higher. In fact, an airbus A380 costs around $440 million USD per unit, the Russian version was impossibly cheap. Sukhoi knew this, and asked for financial help from China and India, as well as the Russian government, to build it.
Because India and China would be the primary operators of the type, and that the aircraft would see little action within Russia itself, the government diverted the funds to other projects in 2001.

The Antonow An-225 also has a twin front gear like this design.
Same as the 124
It also carries and unloads shipping containers.
@Robert Hall No it hasn't. It has 4 wheels but they are mounted on one strud, not two like the An 124 and An 225.
Exactly. And just in case, somebody doubts it: czcams.com/video/gH6oKrhGGtQ/video.html

*shocked Pikachu face*
How would they do it?
omg i- **W H E E Z E**
It would require an entire flight deck filled with specialists to help fly the beast like in the An-225.
The irony of AN-225 was that it was built to carry Soviet space shuttle. Which went to space and landed in automatic mode without crew. Which means they did have the technology. Just that unlike capitalist carriers never had the incentive to get rid of extra people

Is it just me or did anyone else had to decipher what's said by the bass vibration?

It's classified information - not to be disclosed.
I was gonna ask about that. Very deep sounds in this one.
I actually thought my audio system had broken down…
yeah, it sounds as if was mixed by Christopher Nolan
3:17 did you really forget about the Antonov AN-225 that also has 2 axles at the front
Fantastic, I had NO idea this plane was ever conceived! Thanks for this!
Very welcome! Its totally insane! I love the fact that it runs on its own cargo!
The last variant made me think of “getting high on your own supply” 😂
Can't wait for the remake of this video now that you've given us a sneak peek in the 200k milestone livestream! Wish you good work
Could you imagine if a natural gas carrier version experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly during an unplanned ground approach?

Sino-Russian jets aren’t going to break into the exotic jets market because they aren’t established. Their current focus on A320 and A350 class planes are good; high volume middle of the market market where they can get a slice.

Why did you put "hummer and sickle" on preview if project was definitely from post-Soviet era?
But doesn't today's Aeroflot still incorporate the hammer and sickle?
@@HC-cb4yp No. Russian Federation and it's commercial companies don't use hammer and sickle for almost thirty years. Basically, since the USSR fell.

Yes, in Soviet times, a two-story airplane was developed, it remained on paper, it's a pity.
Nor really, as most Soviet Design Studies were exactly that, Design Studies...
Hello there Mr. Nick , I subscribed to you day before yesterday on the 13th of March 2021 and I have watched all your videos. I just finished watching the Russian A380/747 - the Super Jumbo Jet That Never Got Built. All the videos are so cool , nice animations. I wish that I had found this channel earlier. The Animations are fantastic. Waiting for more videos on other topics too.
Now, this one I don't remember. Thank you!
Very nice video, well documented. Thanks :)

The a380 at home:
Randomly recommended and already interested in your content. Y’gained a sub mate!
Welcome aboard! I have more videos just like this one on the channel and on the way - three more actually out before the end of the month I hope!
The thing that worried me the most was evacuation times. That lower deck would have been a real struggle just in boarding and disembarking and we have all seen how crazy people get once the plane has landed. Multiply that craziness with panicking idiots in a life or death situation and there are going to be a lot of casualties. If the aircraft was fitted for total economy class then I shudder to think of the casualty figures.
That's what worried you? I can see it, but I'll raise you a question: How many Russian made/designed civil aircraft types haven't crashed? I believe it's all of them at some point.
TU-114 never crashed.

Even tough it should have more then once when it has soo many ppl onboard, for a fast and efficient Boardning and Deboarding.

Fascinating- Impressive design, would have been a beast!
My thoughts exactly. I love the escalators onboard.
well... it really started to develope in USSR, but than fall of USSR and new company Sukhoi decided to review that project. But u probably didn't know that Boeing together with Sukhoi developed a new plane - Sukhoi Superjet 100. So KR-860 lost. Now in russian aviation came to new concept - flying wing. So aviation technologies will go from "pipe with wings (sausage) " to " flying wing ". About concepts close to flying wing - make internet search for " Frigate Ecojet".
Russia makes the best science fiction cartoon movies.
looks cool
If the 747 and A380 had a baby
An-124 and An-225 both have two sets of front wheel sets.
because it's the same technology invented by russian inventor and Chief designer of An-124 and An-225 Viktor Tolmachev. Oleg Antonov called him PROFESSOR .
Bring this beast back! Perfect for pandemic times like now
Uh. Oh. The Coronavirus has become sentient like an itty bitty land shark.
I found somehow it has a much elegant wing design compare to a380s, look at that BWB design.
I think it would have been better if the ends swiveled back instead of up. I can see how there would be structural issues with supporting a 15 meter+ extension on the end of a wing that was vertical.
3:15 Every other aircraft? Nose wheel on a B 52, works well.

What if the hydraulics fail and the wing closes
o o f
Boeing is trying to address that problem with the 777x
They default to open position, meaning you need hydraulic pressure to fold the wingtip. In the event of a hydraulic failure, the wingtip would simply be held in whatever position it was in.
@@tjfSIM *we'll be right back*
@Hamidkhan Abdullakhan The folding wing tips on the 777 are so small the aircraft will be able to fly even if they fall off, just less efficiently.
Aircraft companies: so why should we get this new Russian airliner
Sukhoi: its super manoeuvrable
Looks like the aircraft from the movie Flight Plan 😁
it's not a mix of 747 and a380,it's a mix of the an225,747,and the a380

It sounds cool on paper and the future. The amount of mechanical failures would be alot and it also seems like the maintenance would be excessive.
Who cares how many passengers and which airline can fly the furthest. We still love you Boeing!
Just what we needed, the Yugo of the skies.
Ah yes, the Sukhoi Aerobus. Can’t wait to watch!

Few words about technologies used in this concept:
1. special cockpit. It's kind of same like on An-124 and An-225, but only 2 pilots needed.
2. twin front gear like An-124 and An-225.
3. internal wing structure like An-124.
4. folding wings like on Russian fighters. This technology will be used on the new An-124-300 aircraft ... or rather, on the new cargo plane SLON (elephant). probably will build under IL aviation manufacturer.
All this technologies came from An-124 and An-225 Chief designer Viktor Tolmachev. He was a Great Man !
Planes look better when the cockpit is on the highest deck.
Take note, Airbus.
no.
Until now, I had never heard of this aircraft design by Sukhoi.
The teardrop cockpit was also already practically used on a plane, the AN22 used such a design.

Cockpit high to allow cargo version front door. Similar to 747 ..however good idea.
If an 225 was airliner it maybe the first and only aircraft with triple deck in the world
Great! Now we need an a319/737-700, an a320/737-800, an 757/a321, an 777/a330, an 787a350 and an Embraer e-jet/a220
Would love the aircraft that was in casino royale to be built.
The Russian built there super sonic airliner, they built there own space shuttle, why can't they build there superjumbo?
They also had a moon rocket and lander .. the problem is, none of these projects had any longevity. They either never flew and were cancelled or suffered from various issues that led to their cancellation. Of the projects listed, the Tu-144 is the only thing that was actually flown beyond test flights.
Most of these projects were based on stolen designs (the "Concordski", the Buran) and they either lacked the engineering knowledge or the financial capital to finish them .. plus lacked the ability to market them outside of a select group of nations.
They already have one an 225
Given the issues Suhkoi has had with the Superjet this aircraft would have been a bridge too far.
Because it would have the same faith: super sonic airliner was never anywhere close to efficiency and safety - the reason it was flying for only a few months. Their own space shuttle made a single flight without a crew, after which the program was abondoned. So could they buit it? - Probably yes. But luckely for their budged that time they decided not to give birth to a dead child.
They could probably build it - the question is if they would have been able to sell it international. Usually Russian airliners are mostly used in Russia itself, while Boeing and Airbus sell worldwide.

Do you think the model from the airshow still exists somewhere?
Audio is incredibly bass heavy, I have F&E videos play all the time but this is the first aviation station video and I had to drop the balance from +5 bass to -6 bass to not blow the sub.
The cargo container and the train car would have never flown. That is straight up marketing department not consulting the engineers / designers.
The weight from one of those containers and the train carriage would ruin their flight capacity. It's more economical to fly twice the cargo in lightweight containers, as the value of not having to do the transfer does not outweigh that capacity.
Did you research before this comment?
The A380 was actually originally conceived as a 1000 seat aircraft. Airbus then thought that was to big a leap in 1 go, so made it shorter. Lots of pics on Google showing the 'stretched' version.
This is a additional point which broke the neck of the 380 - The wings and the structure were still made for the 1000 passenger -900 version, the wings are too heavy and too big for the -800 and have a inferior aspect ratio because of the 80 m wingspan limit.
Now I know we're Boeing got there folding 777x winglets
Boeing only uses it to maintain the current ICAO class of the 777 (the next class would be less flexible and cost more landing fees). Over 80 m they need it.
The 380 should also have had such folding wings, they squeezed the wings to 79,80 m, but got a bad aspect ratio which costed fuel efficiency.
I wish this air craft got built
