- In this video I show how you can easily create and connect an irrigation system to your freshwater fish tank so that your garden is automatically watered each time you do a waterchange. Once it is setup all you need to do is turn on the pump and the aquarium drains, and the garden is watered (no buckets needed). I will show you how I put the irrigation system together, the equipment I used, and how it all works so that you can make and customise your own. Hopefully this gives you some inspiration :)

The tree looks like an avocado.
Great idea on watering the garden. I live in the SW US so are looking at water shortages.
You're very crafty and smart with this aquarium, plant, bird, lizard, and irrigation stuff❤👩🐥🐟🦎🦘
Hahaha, thank you Tommy. I do try 🤣
And wips you have your own Little Oasis 🌻👍
Loved the mulch under your trees, that water will do much for them. Your accent sounds really nice.
Thank you 😊
One stone, two birds. Great idea. Thank you, Kaity.
Thank you 😊🙌
Thanks for the great ideas......much better use of the old fish water than dumping it down the drain.
Thank you 😊 I totally agree!!
Thats actually a badass idea.
Thank you 😄
Awsome garden!! i hope you and the co-host will be chilling out there soon 😁
Hahaha, she is too cheeky to be allowed to go outside 😂
@@Kaityscichlids hihi little rascal
Awesome kaity. Never seen that done before!!!!!!!
Thank you 😄😄😄
Love the water recycling idea
Yes it's great being able to use it for the plants!
Great vid!!
Thank you 😄
Such a simple, efficient, and easy way to use up that fish water. Well done! Thx for sharing
Thank you so much 😊
Amazing idea to make use of tank water that will fertilize your garden. Very multifunctional. Enjoyed seeing Little Man too!
Thank you so much 😄🦎💕
Love the garden, you know how to transform to have a great living loving experience in what you do and keeping Green 💚🥇🙏
Thank you so much 😊🌿💗
Wonderful idea. Thanks!
Thank you!!
Great work Katie
Thank you 😄
That's a fantastic practical tip!
I would love to see more of your dragon 🙂
Thank you so much 😄 That can definitely be arranged!
Well done kaity
Thank you 😊
Great Idea!
Thank you 😄
Thank you for the visuals on the list of things needed! It helps. Gonna try this out for my 50gal guppy pond.
That's great to hear!! I always find visuals help so much too. I hope it goes well for you 😊
I think you need to secure the pump to prevent the guppy from escaping. I usually use siphon line to suck the water out to have a gentle flow and then use that to water my plants.
Brilliant 👏
Thank you 😄
Hi kaity I'm your new subscriber I love cichlyd fish that's why I'm here,I'm from the Philippines and a cichlid breeder
Hello Reden! That's so awesome to hear 😄 And thank you for the sub!
Love it!
Thank you 😄
Great job Kaity. I’m doing the same but without a pump. I run it out a window then I have a level down from my deck to my garden so it just works all going down hill. I think I’ll add the sprinklers to it, great idea! Thanks for sharing ❤️🇦🇺
Oh that is a great idea!! I'm sure with a wide enough hose you'd have plenty of pressure behind it for a good irrigation system 😊
It would be so cool having that kind of setup.
Smart thinking Cichlid girl✌️🏴
Thank you 😄
snazzy idea mate!
Thank you 😄😄
Harika bir fikir ve uygulama 👏👏👏
Very good idea
Thank you 😊
Geat video ❤❤❤❤❤
Brilliant! Another method to put the polypipe on to the fittings is to heat some water in a largeish container then stick the end of the polytube into the hot water to soften it a bit. The fittings usually slide right in then. MTC 🙂
Thank you so much Ron!
Awesome tank. I suggest on getting a smart power board. Makes things much easier.
Thank you! Yes I definitely need to get something like that. I'd love to fix up all my cables too, it's a bit of a nightmare under the tank at the moment
Very awesome video cool 😎 👍 great job
Thank you so much 😊
Your very welcome anytime kaity
Wow...Look at the professional level job you have done! You are so handy, and a good artist too with your rendering! You must be some type of engineer as a profession? Love your videos! ❤
Thank you so much! I think I just love anything to do with my fish tanks 🤣
She is gorgeous so that added effects to the video
Awesome idea Kaity! I’d suggest getting a straight connections that are like the 90° connections you have for the poly pipe to go from the poly pipe to the garden hose with a plastic hose clamp from Bunnings that way it won’t leak. Keep up the great work.
That's actually a great idea! I didn't even think of that. Thank you 😊
Great suggestion. Thanks
@@Kaityscichlids I’m always happy to help a fellow fish keeper out. You make absolutely amazing videos and I’m always excited when I see that you have uploaded a new video. I always like it within the first couple of seconds because I love your channel and I want you to have as much success as possible!! It would be Amazing if you did a meet up one day (obviously on your terms could be with the keeping fish simple channel) but I’m all the way down near Newcastle in NSW so I doubt I’ll be able come come to a meet up unless it’s in Sydney at an aqua show or something. None the less you make amazing videos so keep up the great work and remember to have fun while you’re at it. Take care Kaity. 😊
Looks great!! My 2 cents, if that is the tank you have the large canister filters on, you could have a tee and two valves in the out flow canister pipes and then just connect to that for each change to save having to put the pump in the tank, well I am lazy anyway and it is what I do 😊
Thank you 😊 That's not a bad idea! I just hate touching my canister filters 😂
Now that's a great idea!
Ingenious! You must have been a plumber in a past incarnation! Great video and real food for thought. Does your tap water that you fill your aquariums from have high or low nitrate? Your little yellow bird is so cute. Envious of you going into Spring down under. It's the opposite here. Great videos and nice back garden.
Thank you Dominic 😄 That is my little bird Laila! I'm loving the Spring here despite it being on the warmer side. I've actually never tested the nitrates of my tap water, I just assumed it would be 0
Plants love Fish aquarium, water.. I feed it to mine.. Nice Setup..😅
They sure do! Thank you 😊
Cool bearded dragon! love those frilled dragons you have in OZ! like something out of jurassic park! Dont you ever siphon the sand for waste ?
Hahaha, yes they are awesome!! We don't get to have any reptiles imported but luckily we have some cool ones here. I siphon out the fish waste manually before I drain the tank normally, I just didn't include it in this vid
But I live in England my garden is always full of water, it constantly falls from the sky over here 😂. Love your videos so iv just subscribed
Hahaha, yes I've heard the weather is quite rainy over there 🤣 Thank you so much!! And thank you for the sub 😊
Looks amazing kaity what you have done. Wish I was that handy at diy and technical stuff like that. Your tank always looks so clear. How many bristle nose pleco did you say you had in previous video? I got one last Friday for my 90 litre tank just waiting to see how clean it gets my rocks but its only a baby one at the moment so maybe take it a while 🤣🤣
Thank you so much 😊 I'm really not that handy usually, I was a bit amazed that it worked out! 😂 I have 3 bristlenose catfish but I did get them as babies. When they were little it took them about a month I'd say to clean the rocks
You are so lucky when having one. They are just so cool.
Cute patch of grass 😂 I always found aqua pro pumps to be quite over priced for what you got but you’re right they do make effective drainage mechanisms
Hahaha, thank you 😂 It's a great weed grower for my bearded dragon. They aren't the most reliable pumps but they're definitely good for using once a week for draining
Nice. I'd have to pump mine up a level, but that wouldn't be difficult,
Thank you 😄 And I like your pun 😂
@@Kaityscichlids hahaha! I definitely not intended, but still funny.
so awesome. i usually just flood my rose garden but i love this way better. what is the sprinklers called that you are using?
I used to do that too with my old garden! They are called irrigation sprayers 😊
That's pretty damn clever with the drip emitters. I have a similar set-up but just to water my lawn cause African cichlid water is bad for my Azalea bed and veggie garden. That's the only thing to keep in mind with african cichlids: their water is typically high ph and there are lots plants that struggle with water like that.
Thank you 😊 And that's a very good point! I didn't even think about the high pH. I will have to make sure it's ok for the plants
Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for the information.
Hi Katy, what are you doing to refill your tank without shocking the fish with a temperature change! Love your garden watering idea so much!!!
Hey Sarah! Thank you 😄 I just have a hose connected to the laundry tap and I use the hot water to adjust it to the right temperature 😊
Fish-tuber by day, plumber by night. lol
This video couldn't have come at a better time, I've been meaning to get a water change system that's less hands-on after buying a bunch of cool BN plecos
😂 That's great!! Hopefully this gave you some ideas 😄
Awesome Job! I wonder though, you have two FX6 units so why do you not use the FX6 outlets/drains to pump the water out? I have FX6's and I have a similar sprinkler system that I have connected to the outlets. It's the same thing but I skip the need for the extra pump. I also don't have the hassle of putting in a pump in my tank.
Thank you 😄 I have never used them to drain the tank purely just because for some reason I find it simpler for my brain using the external pump
@@Kaityscichlids if remember correctly, the fx filters have a valve that also allows backwashing of the filter media to extend maintenance intervals. Good job with the black (uv stabilised) cable/zippy ties! Good work plumbing this in, others have already covered stuff I was going to add. So I'll just add that if you make one continuous loop with your poly pipe, instead of a dead ended horse shoe shape. This will give equal pressuere and flow rate at all sprinklers.
I have one concern with your bleed valve positioning, please accept my constructive criticism. The drain your water is entering is storm water and piped to your nearest creek/etc, and fry or viable eggs may get Into local water ways. A twenty litre bucket with small holes in the bottom, filter floss or similar then half the bucket full of pool filter sand will catch/filter this an also allow possible saving of fry. The less feral fish in our wild, the longer we'll still be able to keep exotics.
Hey Kaity where did you get those lids…I have just bought a rimless ( with no bracing ) but worry about possible jumpers. Love your videos, and your fish….💞
They are from NVS Aquariums on the Sunshine Coast here in Australia 😊 And thank you so much 💗 Rimless tanks for the win!
@@Kaityscichlids Thanks a lot … I will contact them….👌🏽
Thanks for the nice video Kaity! Aren‘t you worried that debris from the tank is going to clog the sprinklers from the inside?
Thank you Christian 😊 I'm not too worried about it because the pump intake is only pumping water. I use a manual siphon to get rid of most of the fish waste
I also worried about that when I saw her substrate but then I noticed that the pump inlet is staying way higher than the substrate so the purpose is just for pumping the water. It does make sense to me.
Such a brilliant idea, it’s just a shame I can’t do this with my saltwater aquarium. Cam
Thank you 😄 Yet another reason to keep freshwater tanks 🤨
whahahahaha some spit or saliva makes things fit better hahahahaa nice setup will have to do it with my poolpond thanks for the tips :)
Hahaha, exactly!! Thank you :D
👸🏽 Hi Kaity, your looking fresh faced & stress free ... I hope your settled in well ... I think your going too need a 200L water butt in your garden for watering your house plants and maybe your frontage garden ... What about frosted film for the back of your cichlid tank ( hiding the black piping ) and the large glass window above for the extra light and zero algae in the tank ❓
Thank you 😄 Yes I'm getting there!! It has definitely been an exhausting couple of weeks but I'm settling in now. I think I will still try the frosted film at some point but I'm going to leave it for now. I have definitely noticed the water getting a bit green with the window above the tank though, even with the blind closed 😅
@@Kaityscichlids 😁 Yes, the movement of the sun could be hitting your garden patio during the day... Water crystal clear as always 👍👍
is that how Australians call zip ties, zippy ties? So cute if yes
Hahaha, yes, I think we do 😂 unless it's just me 🤔
So what am I missing? Isn’t that a salt tank? Are you killing your grass or growing it?
Never mind they must be cichlids. Good job Katie
Thank you 😄 Yes you definitely don't want to do this with a saltwater tank 🤣
Whaaaat? Still no background? 😀😀😀😀😀
Shhhh 🤫😂😂😂
So you don’t siphon the sand
I normally get my siphon and run it into the sink and siphon the sand, then let the majority of the water pump out into the garden
