- Central Tennessee residents and emergency workers cleaned up Sunday from severe weekend storms and tornadoes that killed six people and sent more to the hospital while damaging buildings, turning over vehicles and knocking out power to tens of thousands.
Officials confirmed that three people, including a toddler, died after a tornado struck Montgomery County 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Nashville near the Kentucky state line on Saturday afternoon. Some 23 people were treated for injuries at hospitals in the county, officials said in a news release.
In a neighborhood just north of downtown Nashville, three people were killed Saturday as a result of tornadoes, the city's Emergency Operation Center said in a social media post.
National Weather Service meteorologists said in a posting on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, said the destructive tornadoes were spawned in the Clarksville and Nashville areas.
In Nashville, the roof of a church north of downtown collapsed during the storm, resulting in 13 people being treated at hospitals, Nashville emergency officials said in a news release. They were later listed in stable condition.
Photos posted by the Clarksville fire department on social media showed damaged houses with debris strewn in the lawns, a tractor-trailer flipped on its side on a highway and insulation ripped out of building walls. Video footage from the Tennessee storms showed a ball of fire rising from behind a row of homes into the sky.
A curfew was in effect both Saturday night and Sunday night in Clarksville, where officials on Sunday urged motorists to keep away from the damaged areas so as not to impede the work of first responders and utility crews.
“We are praying for those who are injured, lost loved ones, and lost their homes,” Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden said in a news release. “This community pulls together like no other and we will be here until the end.”

I was alone in our trailer in Alabama when an F3 tornado hit me. This was in December 2000 and my husband and two young sons were out Christmas shopping for me so I stayed home. It was too late for me to leave when I saw the tornado coming. I ran into the back bedroom, pulled the mattress over top of me and waited--and PRAYED!! In about 20 seconds, I felt the entire home being violently picked up and I began tossing and turning and things were slamming into my body. I remember every moment of it. When I had landed, about 100 feet away, I think I was knocked out for a minute. I looked over where our home had stood and only the propane tank was left and pipes were sticking up out of the ground. It was completely gone. I screamed and neighbors ran over to me. My arm was obviously broken and I was cut and bruised from head to toe and eventually had to have back surgery--but I was alive!! We lost everything but our community was amazing and our sons still had a good Christmas. My advice is don’t become complacent. We had always gone to a friend’s home during a warning but I was alone and they had always blown over-but this one sure didn’t!
I'm so glad God sent His angels and you're alive. Praise Jesus ❤
My family went through the same tornado and ran to a neighbors. It tore the roof off and moved their 2 story home off its foundation. But made it out without any injuries, but scared them to death. My uncle was holding the door shut and saved their life. Im so sorry you had to go through that with so many injuries and losing your home, especially alone! But Praise Jesus you made it through! They never rebuilt and moved off that mountain never to return, it was just to traumatic after going through it and seeing what devastation and the bodies all around them. I know you can never forget that, but so glad you came out alive.
Thank God you're ok
Oh wow, and 23 years later, I can tell by the power of your writing it, that experience still lives with you. I swear we will all be living in houses under the ground soon enough because these twisters are getting stronger and more frequent every year
Wow, what a story. So glad you made it out alive!!!
If it looks like it not moving it’s probably coming straight at you! The force of a tornado is something you should never trust… rather be safe than sorry!

In this video you could clearly see it was moving to their left. Saying that, they can turn and/or expand while speeding up in a matter of seconds. Always best to take safety measures
Core memory unlocked! That reaction is so perfectly Tornado Alley. I lived in North Dakota until I was 6, and I really thought that going outside and watching until the last possible second was what you were supposed to do when the tornado was heading your way. It’s what my family did, and the neighbors too. No cell phones back then, and my uncle still laments that he didn’t have one when the wind bent the trees in front of our house until it looked like they were lying down on the ground. Lol… Glad you’re safe!
Apparently Tennessee is on the north side of the recently named "Dixie Alley." I'm used to hearing about tornadoes along a corridor centered on Highway 64, which runs close to the TN line with MS-AL-GA. More often in MS and AL but TN had one years ago that is still in the record books. (1998, 1 mile wide, F5, centered in Lawrence County; not sure if it was a tornado in other counties, but it was a destructive storm. And if I recall correctly, it was a tornado on the ground throughout its path from entering Lawrence County to exiting it.)
I stood in the picture window watching it (!) while my family huddled in the basement....
From Tornado Alley myself, Oklahoma to be exact. And while yes, we are notorious for standing outdoors watching tornados, most of us are just as notorious for heading to our storm shelters. I have family members who lost everything in the 2 separate Moore tornados, in-laws lost so much in the El Reno tornados where 2 storm chasers were killed. We may joke about living in Tornado Alley but it's a coping skill in my opinion. Tornados are no joke and so unpredictable. Look quick, then get underground has become our new catch phrase😊
Texan here. If you can see debri in the air, whether the tornado is heading towards you or not, its time to seek shelter. That has to land somewhere.
And sometimes they just stop and twirl and throw stuff around!!!🌪️
Whether you see debris or not, you should be seeking shelter if it’s that close. What if it’s just overwater and there’s no debris to be had? Those things change direction and jump from spot to spot they’re very sporadic.
It's like a drill. Just crazy.
Agreed!
You should have gotten in a safe place. Crazy to just stand there and watch!
Tornadoes change direction quickly. When you hear the train, take shelter.
I heard a train went out side watched a irrigation start flying barn literally exploded I watched part of a roof fly off
How do I know if the tornado hears the train? Do I have the tornado on speed dial?
@@masterpaine9161 If you hear a train and it's storming and no trains are near u take shelter stay away from debris and tornados unless ur like me ... Personification it whatever schools teach us

@@masterpaine9161No. Tornados are not allowed to answer the phone while in pursuit. If you wanna know if the tornado hears the train another guess of mine would be to ask his friend, the hurricane. Hope this helps.
I am family in tornado alley and was told after prepping what ever they can ahead of time they will watch the tornado and if it quits moving it is heading directly at you and shelter immediately. If it’s moving you can have a little time to gather stuff but never take your eye off of it unless it’s to shelter.
I live in Greeneville Tennessee right at the base of the mountains and a few years ago when the tornadoes hit, it took out two counties. I believe there were 3 of them all together but 2 of them ran the same path and were minutes apart. I've never been so scared and I lost a few friends, family, and neighbors. We were all lucky! We always thought the mountains protected us from the tornadoes but once they broke across the ridge, they just bounced back and forth between the ridges. Side note, my Mom, Dad, and son all slept through it, even though the end of our trailer was bouncing 8 feet off the ground. People always joked and said that Mom could sleep through a hurricane, well, it wasn't a hurricane, just 3 tornadoes that brought fema out and was declared a disaster. HeHe, momma always brings light to a dark situation. I love my momma!
Rule of thumb if u see a tornado but it looks like its not moving its actually moving straight at you

A few days later, I saw that infamous grey-green sky though a window, but nothing happened in our area.
Reid Timmer would lol.
They sound so calm
I think you mistake stupid for calm.
The lack of awareness is worrying..
People really need to listen and regard the importance of weather warnings instead of being complacent.
Great audio capture of the wind noise!!
Tornadoes do not have to hit you directly to cause much damage. There are winds that come off of tornadoes that are called straight line winds that can go as much as a 60+miles an hour, and they can do a lot of damage. Take it from me, I’ve been in more than one.
Prayers for Tennessee
I live in the city in TN the tornado hit. A 4 month old baby was lifted from a home and found in a tree, Completely unharmed.
She got some amazing footage of that thing standing on the roof of her house!
Its not the tornado that kills you. It's what is picked up & thrown by the winds of the tornado that kills you. You are so lucky you didn't get hit woth anything. Stay safe.
She needs to question her "honeys" judgment.
The best thing you can do is film the tornado. We all know that the camera person never dies. Smart woman right there. 👍
No storm chasers have ever died
That's not true at all. Apparently you never saw the video of the elderly couple who died filming their last moments of a tornado coming directly at their home
She is brilliant 😮😂
I guess you have not mastered the art of sarcasm.@@squarehammer4619
The safest place is right next to the window after all...lol
If it looks like it's standing still, it's coming directly at YOU. TAKE SHELTER! 🌪️
People should really educate themselves on the dangers of being outside. Especially just to film it.
People in tornado prone areas should build below ground shelters, accessible from the inside of house and outside.
In Colorado it's common to have basements but here in North Texas almost every building is on slab foundations. No idea why especially since we are in tornado alley.
Basement or underground shelter
Most of kentucky and kansas have storm cellars
Hard to do on the Gulf Coast, like Florida, in these shifting sands. Our only option is to buck up, buttercup.
Hard to know what's tornado prone anymore because weather patters are changing. Places are getting tornadoes that never did in the past.
I see I'm not the only one telling them not to trust the direction of a tornado! They can change direction so quickly, one moment they're moving away from you then suddenly they're on top of you! If it's close enough to see it, it's best to take cover until the all-clear. Because if you're outside watching it, you may not have time to get to safety before it hits. It is best to be smart and not throw caution into the literal wind!
If you hear the train, get off the tracks 🚂 🌪️
Please everyone I do love the videos but a tornado is unpredictable and deadly! Get to a safe place and pray instead of filming!! I hope everyone in this neighbor is ok 🙏🏻
I remember waking up from a nap on a Sunday afternoon. I’d only slept an hour, but I felt so much better as if I’d slept longer. I was surprised to see the sky pretty dark for midday. I walked into the Living Room, looked out the bay window, and saw a tornado coming straight for the house! I grabbed my two cats and we hunkered down in the bathroom with no windows. Don’t know how or when it veered off, because it was very close when I saw it. Miracles do happen!
Not miracles, GOD.. He gets the glory
@@simplygem8449 Pft. Right. Then you must blame your god for all the death and destruction. smh
No tornado sirens????

My oldest son lives just a couple streets over from where it hit. Praise God they were all right! Prayers for everyone who received damage or harm! ✝️🙏🏼🥰
She sounds so calm. I would be freaking out!
I’ll never forget the tornado that ripped thru my town 10+ yrs ago. I was working in a nursing home,18, terrified and as it was coming straight towards us the power went out, all I could think was I’m gonna have to save these people. So many CNA’s called out that day. Thank goodness it stopped about 100 ft in front of us. Many of those people would’ve died. We aren’t used to weather like that up north.
Where up North? I’m up North, and we’ve had a few storms with spin-off tornadic action … in New ENGLAND!!
I live in Massachusetts and we had a tornado rip right through our area near Southbridge about 12-14yrs ago. I remember telling my son "Don't worry bud, it's just a warning- we don't have tornadoes in Massachusetts!" I've never eaten my own words harder. It was terrifying!
I live in small suburb of Chattanooga, TN and we had a tornado come thru in 2011 and 2020. In 2011, it damaged my roof, fence and half dozen mature trees. Never knew TN was a hotspot for tornadoes. Never dealt with this living in Michigan/Ohio.
I’m from Canada and I have personally seen 6 different tornadoes, in 3 different provinces. Several big ones way up in Edmonton, Alberta! They go VERY far north! 🌪️🌪️🌪️
As someone that had their home leveled by a F-5 tornado, while in the home coat closet, people cannot comprehend the devastation unless it actually impacted them. It would toss them around like a piece of paper in high winds
What was it like, over in seconds??
Alllllll, right Dorothy, calm down
@@RaptorFromWeegee it's obvious you don't have a concept of the destructive force associated with a F-5 plus tornado. It will get your attention, Karen.
@@Brooklyn0789 seemed like minutes but in reality it passed through my home in 30-45 seconds.
Oh mylanta that is so spooky! Prayers for all of you that have been affected by this tornado
These storms are not playing this season. Praying for everyone!
One of the best videos with sound, absolutely amazing to hear the strength of a tornado almost sounds like a cross between both an airplane and a train!
We had a tornado come through West Tn. It took our roof and back living room wall. We had just got back from the storm shelter! The news gave the all clear! They were wrong and now I'm petrified of any storm.
I have a that lost her home in Clarksville. Praying for you all
That sounds terrifying...especially after they gave the all clear! Glad you weren't hurt and I don't blame you I think I'd be afraid of all storms too 😕
Where in West TN? I lived in Atoka and worked in downtown Memphis, and still remember when a twister hit Munford (just across Hwy 51) and downtown Covington. Thought of moving back, but tornadoes and ice storms got me rethinking my plans.
If you believe in God you won’t ever have to worry. 😊
I’m East Tn I’m shocked by this I’ve never saw this before in Tn like that. I’m so sorry this happened I’m sure it was scary af. I truly hope u are able to fix yr roof damage I wish u the best. Pls stay safe❤
Praying everyone was safe!!!❤
These two are so calm that they need to be working for the local news station!
We live in Tennessee and the storms have been horrific this year and the last couple years. They are increasing. We had a storm shelter put in. It’s an in the ground inside the garage shelter. We got the biggest one they make, it’s big enough for my husband and I and our dogs. Get on a list to get a shelter. Most list are 6 months out, but your name will come up, it’s worth it.
Fortunally in MN we do not get tornados that much and 90% of the homes up here have a basement. It seem like the tornados love the trailer parks up here. If a tornado comes, it will always hit the trailer park for aome reaaon.
@@JAM661 climate change. Corps keep messing with the terrain...it allows this tornados to build up this level of strength and destruction. You never hear rich people getting hit by tornadoes...location location.
My daughter, her husband and two children live in Clarksville. The tornado caused a lot of destruction near their home, but they were spared thank goodness!
Yeah I live in Clarksville too. It was crazy!
I was active duty military when a tornado hit Ft Campbell, KY. Clarksville TN is half of Ft Campbell. It destroyed an old church 😞It went through my friends backyard and took out the trees in his backyard
@s.h8589 yeah the siren at fort Campbell is handy during tornado weather. You can hear it really good at my house.
Thank God for His protection. 🙏
@@lesli9518Amen!
if it’s moving left and right, you’re okay for now, but if it looks like it stops moving, you better take shelter. Take shelter regardless though because like others have said you cannot trust the traveling path of a tornado
I would have never been outside with a tornado come in. You never know where these tornadoes are gonna come from that was dangerous.😮
I know of a lieutenant firefighter who had to quit his job because of seeing such horrific visual curcumstances that it messed up his life real bad. He couldn't get it out of his mind especially when it came to children.
I have a new found respect for anyone that deals with the same circumstances like ambulance drivers, cops, nurses and doctors .
A few yrs ago I saved someone's life. I cannot tell you how happy I was to see Emergency crew lights shining on the snow.. Most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Few more minutes and she would have died in my arms. Forever grateful. Her core body temp.was 75° F. She had slipped down her deck steps after a record snowfall and had been laying at the bottom since 9pm. We found her at 2am. My daughter happened to check outside for snow level and she thought she heard an injured animal and came to get me. She was 12 at the time ❤ It was our nextdoor neighbor... I was in tears as I held her telling her she was going to be okay. She was already in the death rattle. She broke both hips and shattered her knee. I cannot imagine how first responders deal with death and the dying. It makes your heart panic stricken when faced with someone dying right in front of you. They came out to tell us updates on how she was doing and told us we were heroes. I said NOOO I just found her, held her and called THEM. They saved her beyond what I could do. I was grateful they arrived in time ❤ Something I will never forget. Those lights arriving... felt like a miracle.
I saw an image on LiveLeak, decades ago, of a body that got hit by flying debris. It basically ripped an entire side of their upper torso off.
Man, that website was gruesome. Like 15 years later, and I'm still disturbed by some of the images that were on there.
I can't imagine having to see such sights, in person. Absolutely horrific.
