- A grisly medieval plague of holy fire. An experiment gone wrong. And…the CIA? All of these unlikely elements weave together in the story of accidental discovery that gave us LSD. Plus, how scientists today are studying how psychedelics could be used to treat mental illnesses like depression, addiction, OCD, and more.

please do not eat moldy bread or moldy anything unless you know what kind of fungus made it moldy. i’m sure it’s possible that year-old slice of bread in the back of the cabinet could make you high but it is much more likely to give you food poisoning than anything else.
very good advice! mould could produce methanol and put you 6 feet under!
Special note to all ruzzians.. ignore what we wrote about the risks, go ahead and eat them mouldy taters and do go belly up!! :))
Yes. Black mold is poisonous.
Ergot itself is also very poisonous
99% of the time its tritch, which is harmless, just not very nice.

LSD has been a major tool for me in managing and beginning to recover from combat PTSD. Spent a decade on pill cocktails from the VA before I was introduced to L, threw out all the pills after 3rd therapeutic use of L. 8 years later majority of the secondary issues of PTSD (depression, dissociation, isolating myself, BPD) are non existent.
These days I microdose 10-20mcg a 1-2 times a week to manage anxiety, sleep disorder a couple other minor issues that weren't super noticeable before my major symptoms were controlled.
I would like to experience joy.
I manage the residual stress of combat trauma (13F, Sadr City in 2003-2004, Taji 2004-2006) by reading philosophy 2ish hours a morning and regular exercise, good eating choices and an admittedly healthy amount of alcohol. I’m glad LSD works for you bud, I simply don’t have access nor the time away from my child to make that possible for me but my way is working so far.
@@addammaddur way sounds great! except all tze alc..alcohol is a depressant.. and it might make some depression and isolationist simptoms worse..
I'm glad you've found something that helps. The the trial-and-error phase for meds can be one of the harder things to get through in terms of treatment, especially when some options aren't available for questionable reasons. Thanks for your service, and take care.

before anyone tries to eat moldy bread for a high, be aware that the side effects of unprocessed ergot can lead to amputations, simply not worth it
It’d be pretty hard work to get hold of ergot bread these days in most industrialised country’s. You’d literally have to grow the wheat or barley yourself, under conditions that ergot likes growing in. And then happen to have ergot invade your crop. Then harvest your crop, dry the grains, grind them into flour and bake with them. That’s not something anyone’s going to do on the spur of the moment without a great deal of research. On the other hand, just eating bread that’s gone mouldy will probably make you very sick too, and won’t even have a chance of giving you a trip. So definitely don’t do that either
Ergot wont grow on bread. Its a parasitic fungus it needs a living rye plant to grow.
"Free your mind, and your arm will follow." 😂
Ergot infects rye in the field, on the grains themselves, well before it is ever made into bread and does not grow on bread.
This is a fascinating topic that is unfortunately rife with misinformation and mythology.

When I was a young teenager… I was extremely hateful, angry, and no self esteem. I even planned a shooting, I hated my classmates that much and the world. Then I did mushrooms at 15 years old and it changed my ENTIRE life. I felt one with the universe and everything in it. I realized everyone is special and that life is a beautiful gift. It immediately broke me down and put me into check. 15 years later and I’ve done psychedelics many, many times and they have only made me a more loving and grounded human. What a beautiful gift these medicines are. It’s a shame the state wants to tell people what they can and can’t use for their mental and spiritual health. But that doesn’t have to stop you, and I’m THANKFUL everyday that I was a rebellious teenager and took that first trip. How amazing my life has turned out to be from where I was and where I could be.
Born1957, LSD and mushrooms were common for us to do as teens and older. Luckily, I never had a bad trip but like you found it a majorind expansion which was nothing but good. So was pot. WTF is microdosing? We macro dosed!

Schedule 1 classification is outrageous- just one example Grateful Dead fan base- it’s literally millions of people, let’s go low and say 1/2 of them have tripped, now let’s say not once but 5 times-this is still a lowball number, are they all insane? We’re talking 30 years of this experiment-it’s all ridiculous! That said individuals with any known mental health issues, people in a current crisis, basically fragile people-should avoid, although with sage guidance and very low doses…..it’s not a super casual experience-but I’m glad I had my turns!!!
Interesting little tidbit: humans have been using asbestos for so long that ancient Egyptians (and others) knew it caused damage to the lungs. The US didn't start regulating asbestos until the mid- to late 1900's if I'm not mistaken. Funny how that works, isn't it?
Yup. Lowball. Sadly, since Jerry is gone, it's more about money than love and brotherhood. But those were the days.

As someone with Bipolar I it is so frustrating that someone with my diagnosis is automatically excluded from all forms of psychedelic therapy. I believe it would be so incredibly helpful if I could use psychedelics in a controlled therapy setting and I absolutely would if I had the chance. I have used psychedelics recreationally without negative side effects. I understand why they would not want anyone with a history of psychosis to use them, but although psychosis is a possible symptom of Bipolar disorder it is not present in all cases. I feel that if someone has no history of psychosis and have used psychedelics in the past successfully they should at least be considered on a case by case basis. I hope that in the future they will reconsider and allow greater access to this crucial therapy.
Just get some from a drug dealer fuck the doctors 😂
I have a friend who has done mushrooms (with a tripsitter) to heal. It's not the same as with a professional though. I wish professional psychedelic therapy was normal.
In the meantime, you can use psychedelics therapeutically by yourself. Thousands of people already have and are doing it right now, me among them. I spoke about it to my doctor, psychotherapist as well as social worker, they help me navigate and integrate the psychedelic experiences. If you are already followed by professionals, speak to them about it and if you can source it yourself ( and test it for its contents, there are reagents for that availlable for sale online, erlich and hofmann are the primary ones ) then you can do it safely until MindMed ( MM120, 100 micrograms lysergic tartrate ) and other companies finish their trials so it becomes prescribable. The study criteria are too narrow IMO. The Phase III Pathfinder clinical trial (focus on safety and long term effects) has some very narrow inclusion criteria. I had weaned myself off serotonin affecting meds only to be told the current trial cohort requires that you have been on no less than 2 different meds "for the current episode". I've been on every SSRI, SSNRI, tricyclic and atypical for TRD, but I would only be considered a valid subject if I put my body through another round of meds I already know don't work for me.
Ironically LSD-25 is one of the best migraine treatments for Cluster Headaches, so he actually did succeed in finding a migraine medicine. As shown in Sewell's studies roughly 80% of LSD participants experienced remission of their migraines.
As someone who suffers from these and other types of migraines, that's useful information. I wish the medical establishment was more embracing of non-traditional pharmacopeia.
@erinmac4750 I also have cluster headaches. Psychedelic medicines gave me my life back

No. I laugh when I see all of the colors and waves on screens meant to represent it. Hell, you don't need any extras, you can just watch your shirt sleeves in your closet if you want. Lol.
Never been a fan of drugs but I do believe countries should have a lot more relaxed approach to people using them because let's be real, if someone wants to use a certain drug they will find it one way or another.
and better that they have, relatively, safe ways of approaching them instead of some shady person/group with questionable motives. Though the same could be said about "the government", I trust them more than the local dealer and his cohorts.
Definitely. It’s just our damn choice isn’t it? No government has the right to tell us what we can and can’t put in our bodies. They should simply promote safe practices.
regulated drug use is safer than illegal drug use
LSD is chemically made by man and is somewhat harsh. This is made into a drug by man- the aspect of this influence comes from mushies and nature. This experience with true medicine heals. The whole experience is not something someone gets addicted to or uses to run away from their problems. It makes people face them. It is deeply healing.
Most ppl that start off saying they're not a fan of drugs oddly feel comfortable with Pharma... which replicates what's found in nature w crude oil ect
Expanding our minds, in all aspects is absolute necessary.
Amen. I feel like we were given drugs as a breadcrumb trail back to our ancestors. Every plant and animal on Earth makes DMT. That is no accident. MDMA changed my life….for the better. Over 20 years after the experience, and I can point to those few days where I learned that empathy was not an afterthought, but the main event. They should put that stuff in the water supply. It would change the world. This is fact.😁

Lsd saved my life.
It saved me twice now, but pretty sure its done. I haven't tripped for 1,5 years now and don't even microdose anymore.
Had a completely and longlasting traumatic childhood with many forms of abuse and became an orphan early in life on top of a lot of other stuff. Lsd has helped me completely overcome a many years long extreme anxiety disorder, workthrough my complex traumas, fix a fragile ego and many insecurities. It even taught me to cope with the overwhelm that is life, adhd, minor brain dmg, dealing with chronic pain and other mental health disorders. For the first time I'm commiting to actual healthy relationships, feeling like myself, dare to be authentic, took of my mask, able to enjoy life, laugh, feel incredibly appreciative and sometimes even happy!
For the longest time I could not for the life of me even imagine life could be this way, while I was deeply depressed and in survival mode for over 20 years.
To not undermine my own hard work; of course I've done most the work to get where I am today myself. But you cannot get a nail into the wall by hitting it with your hand.. You need a hammer or something like it. Lsd was my hammer.

Ergot ≠ mold. It is its own species of fungus entirely more closely related to cordyceps, the fungus that infects insects and turns them in to "zombies", then normal bread mold. The people who made this video clearly arent mycologists and should not speak as if they are an authority on the subject.
Indeed, I was confused about that, too, and waiting for the connection with mouldy bread until I realised that they seriously meant Ergot with "mould". I just hope noone tries having a trip by eating actual mould now (on French cheese it's mostly harmless though).
I was looking for this. Ergot on the grain that was baked into the bread is different than the mold that comes from spores floating through the air or on people's hands.
@@MuusTricompletely harmless, not a lot of pathogens grow well in firm cheeses.
@squid1712, ergot is a product of a particular fungal group. I’ll watch again, my brain may have filled in that missing piece. I don’t remember the video saying Ergot = mold.
Let's admit we were all in suspense whether Maren was going to drop acid on camera. That's her business! I just want to know how authentic that group bike ride through Basel was.
If the last time I did acid was any indication, another trip would do wonders for my mental health. It wouldnt be a panacea, but itd probably be a push to get the ball rolling so to speak.

Moldy rye rather than moldy bread.
Is it possible that Hoffman's first trip was through his skin?
I'd read he absorbed it through his fingertips.
No it's not possible, LSD is not able to be absorbed through the skin. The theory is that he initially said he absorbed it by touching it because admitting to accidentally ingesting would mean he's a poor chemist and admitting to intentionally ingesting it would raise all kinds of questions
I should get back into psychedelics again. I kinda left them behind as I aged.... now I'm all grumpy and depressed. I could use a dose of sparkle.
The "feeling a new zest for life" the next morning is actually very true.
Even after having an unimaginable nightmarish horror trip...next morning I still felt like i was a newborn.
Sadly that feeling never was permanent -> I was never able to use it to treat my issues/grow significantly as a person. At least not as much as I wished (not even close)

Okay, silly question for PBS science video but ... what are these multicolored frames host is using?
They look awesome.
I actually have been looking for new glasses and found the "Freedom" frames I love (in orange, not rainbow, but there is a rainbow one) on eyebuydirect and honestly they look pretty similar if not the same. They might be more round on the bottom than the online ones.
I got a very similar pair from Zenni online eyeglasses. My frames are a very similar design with the same colour-scheme. Only real difference in mine is there are subtle, embossed patterns along the top of the frames & on the arms. The were less than a hundred bucks for frames & lenses (bifocal).
I support the idea of using these drugs for medical purposes, and maybe for recreational uses too. but when it comes to addiction, we should all be taught early that addiction is a part of the human experience, and the challenge is finding a healthy combination of foods, drinks, experiences, and maybe substances, that we become attached to.
It's a struggle starting life without knowing this, because now we have to work with the things that we became addicted to before we could consider the impacts on our health.
lsd is not addictive. quite the opposite actually. it's such an intense, exhausting experience, that once it's over you will not want to do it again any time soon. and if you still tried to do it, you wouldn't feel much at all because it causes rapid tolerance that lasts for a week or so.
but in various studies they did find (as was briefly mentioned in the video) that it has potential as treatment for addiction to alcohol or other drugs.
@@tru7hhimselfbro your experience isn’t the same as everyone else’s. I’ve never tried it but just because one person doesn’t become addicted to a drug doesn’t mean someone else won’t.

The active substance creates a tolerance in the human body after use, which means you could use it again but it would have no effect on you. I learned how to grow a certain mycelium in grains. It helps my depression so much.
Back in the late 60's and early 70's i used LSD. I was really sad during my growing up cuz of abusive parents. by the time i graduated school, i had been using for about 6 mths. and I used it for about a year longer. I never had hallucinations, but things where more acute visually. My IQ still was at 174 as it was before use. That was the happiest period of my life and even after I quit, I remained happy for a few more years, but then i started back in sadness and depression. I have been very depressed over the last 10 years. I was even suicidal. I wish it was available in my area to try again.
If you don't mind me asking but I'm going to assume this as well instead of asking was your abuse started in the first 4 years of your life?

I imagine aversion therapy doesn't combine very well with LSD, 'Nurse bring me the box with the tarantulas! ';
Actually, I heard of an experimental program where exposure therapy is combined with micro-dosing of 'shrooms. The person takes the psychedelic, waits for it to take effect, & the helper brings in the items, or engineers the situations they have a phobia to. It apparently works very well. After a few exposures to their phobia, the patient has very little reaction to their phobic item.

I tried LSD in my early 20s when I lived in the Netherlands during the 90s. I was living in a rural environment and this helped because it can be overwhelming in a crazy urban environment when you take it. It was an experience that is hard wired into my head ever since. I had good trips, felt one with the universe and saw pure psychedelic imagery or more so surrealist images. Never had a bad come down in fact BUT it's not for everyone and you must not let yourself completely go when you take it, you need a modicum of self control. It can be dangerous. However I strongly believe that it can help those with chronic mental health conditions. When you think about it our ancient ancestors took these substances as natural medicines and for communicating with the spirit world now we have greedy multibillion dollar companies peddling over priced drugs and unnecessary death.
I remember when I did it, I didn't hallucinate but I felt super good. Every thing seemed more real, but I also felt slower in my reactions and felt a bit impaired. I wouldn't recommend doing this more than once.
Amazing video.
I'd just like to point out a tiny mistake. The isomer of LSD shown in 8:27 is not the psychoactive isomer. Out of 4 stereoisomers, only (+) is binding to the receptors.
According to a post, two of them are just weaker than proper LSD (one is _much_ weaker):
LSD has two chiral centres, on the 5' and 8' carbons. I drew all the stereoisomers of LSD to show you which are which. (5R,8R)-LSD is what's active. (5S,8S)-LSD has around 2,500-fold lower affinity for the 5-HT2AR than d-LSD. (5R,8S)-LSD has around 25-fold lower affinity (source). The LSD we know is d-LSD. The 8' position can readily epimerise, though, turning d-LSD into (5R,8S)-LSD. This is one of the ways LSD loses potency. (u/heteromer)

We deserve everything coming to us here in America. Buying up all LSD 25, jeez, what a Tool.
It's interesting how I'm planning a trip this month and I got recommended this this evening; although it's not LSD, it's usually LSA which is similar in molecular structure. LSD and LSA are very useful tools for us personally, especially with getting out of thought loops onset by depression or anxiety. I wish it wasn't scheduled so high so researchers could do what they have to for the benefit of others, though saying that, I still think either should be regulated; they're not for everyone.
If it wasn't for Lucy, I don't think we'd still be here honestly.
“A substance very closely related to LSD, the monoethylamide of lysergic acid (LAE-32), in which an _ethyl_ group is replaced by a hydrogen atom on the diethylamide residue of LSD, proved to be some _ten times_ less psychoactive than LSD. The hallucinogenic effect is also qualitatively different: it is characterized by a narcotic component. This narcotic effect is yet more pronounced in lysergic acid amide (LA-111), in which _both_ ethyl groups of LSD are displaced by hydrogen atoms. These effects, which I established in comparative self-experiments with LA-111 and LAE-32, were corroborated by subsequent clinical investigations.”

So jealous of Hoffmans first trip. Sounds incredible
The most common fungus found on modern bread is interestingly still penicillin chrysogenum.
Its usually cohabitating with other fungi too though.
The Grateful Dead earned money to support the band by volunteering at Stanford with the CIA acid tests. There is a book with a title like "the electric kool aid tests" that talks about it.
This might be the best PBS video ever!!!! Definitely my favorite 😄
Everyone should do it a couple times. Our world would be much better off for it. Would totally shatter all this fakeness and make people realize whats truly important. Its made illegal out of fear, ignorance and control. The bigger ups don't want us to know how much it would help us all. It removes all the coverings people wear and allows one to work through the real issues they cant avoid but just cover up. Gotta go through it to get past it. Healing is amazing.
Can't say I'd recommend doing it in a facility though - that would be too weird, triggering and likely traumatic. Not the way to have fun w this experience.
A new video. What a treat! 🤗
ofc the psychadelic researchers are extremely chill
I research all this stuff AFTER I took my first trip back in the 80s but I like your presentation.
I've been on over 100 psychedelic trips. I knew after the first time I tripped that these substances would be with me the rest of my life. I'm very thankful I took that first step.
No way I could have a good experience in a clinical environment. I can't even stand being indoors when I'm tripping. Outside is where it's at.
It's so much better in nature! Outside, on the beach, hiking up a mountain, traversing jungles, etc. Indoors always tend to drag towards a bad trip, at least for me.
Snorkeling on LSD felt like I was in space studying aliens. Building sand castles on the beach I felt like a giant god of some sort, building cities for little people who would come and live there.

Ergotmetrin is still used after birth to return things to normal. I’m allergic and get severe legs cramps from it. So, if I need anything like that I get pitocin.
Another name for _ergometrine_ is _ergonovine_ and another one is _lysergic acid hydroxymethylethylamide_ and, indeed, although some experimenters found it to be LSD-like, they felt that the leg cramps made it prohibitively unusable in higher doses.

Mushrooms saved me from a 15 year depressive episode and gave me the foot up I needed to actually break the chains. I will forever be grateful for that and I hope these substances can be used to help others as well. In my eyes mushrooms are sacred and holy, they come from nature and are absolutely so healing. Before I did them I had no hope that I would ever be able to break free from my depression and I still struggle with it from time to time (I haven’t done them in over 10+ years) but I actually have good days and bad days…and I can overcome my depression whereas in the past it was every single day without end. 11:40 Just want to clarify that the drug does not have high potential for abuse and it has currently accepted medical uses. Much as it is still schedule 1. As absurd as these presumptions are with our modern awareness about it's potential. I just want to clarify that she was saying its still a schedule one drug, not validating those presumptions about what schedule 1 means in regards to it. Much as she worded it as if those presumptions were valid.
So not fair how some states get to enjoy and others don't
Eventually, ergot was replaced with ergonovine for birthing procedures. Another name for _ergonovine_ is _lysergic acid hydroxymethylethylamide._ Owsley said Albert Hofmann told him that ergonovine is 'nearly identical to LSD in effect.'*

I'd like to say congratulations to MK Ultra and the CIA , you successfully produced the unibomber.
great video! and Maren as always bringing fun :) thank you for this episode. it's sad world where our own governance over it, prevents helping people, because of "dangerous substance" - I guess in case of LSD, it produced too much hippy people xD
"I should have worn waterproof pants" my daily mantra...
I love your glasses so much
LSD is an amazing substance, I really wish there wasn't so much of a stigma around it, most people think it's a hardcore drug
When were beds invented
Maybe we should put it in the water supply like floride
"Join us next week, with Hamilton Morris!"
I had an extremely rough life in my younger years, so bad infact that I stopped speaking, I would sometimes say something direct if I wanted something but it was rare, one day we where all sitting on the back of someone's old boat in a back alley and my friends gave me something, as I played with a magnifying glass burning dots into the weatherd wood of the boat I felt something interesting and realized my friend was having a conversation with someone and had zoned out for a moment, out of nowhere I said "hey, are you gonna pass that s*** or what"? Referring to the joint, AJ turned his head and said gimme a sec" then quickly did a double take and said WHAT!?😮 you say something!? SCHWARTZ IS TALKING!! .....welcome back, self . What is this?? I speak.. what did I take? Was given to me my words back.. that day I changed and I say for the better because I became myself again, it was a key that freed me this LSD was not like the others, 1997.. what a year, 😂
Thankyou Dr. Hoffmann.
I really wish psychedelics worked on me. I had my hopes up and my heart set on having a wonderful experience that would help with my mental illness, and to my absolute shock I found it did nothing but make me extremely physically ill. I don't know if it's because I have aphantasia or because I'm autistic or what, none I tried ever had any positive effects or trippy effects on me.
You tried in a professional setting?
This video is dangerous! This will encourage teens to eat moldy bread.
Purely anecdotal, but I find orange juice to be good at calming an uncomfortable trip.
I miss Hamilton on Vice, but ill take this
We are often still doing a lot. We just don't post about it on social media all the time. Because we are too busy doing and not worried about everyone giving us their attention.
