      My neighbor had a terrible Mandolin accident where he lost his arm. Just kidding, but seriously, be careful. Fingertips taste awful in salads.

    Having suffered ten years ago a seriously deep cut on the meaty part of my hand at the base of my thumb that required a visit to A&E (or ER as it's known across the pond) and about 12 stitches, I am finally ready to step back into the water and buy a mandoline again. So I really needed to watch some safety tips! I think I'll always use a safety glove, just to avoid ... y'know.

    Thanks for the tips, Adam. I don't have a mandoline instead I have an old-fashioned box grater. The safety gloves are a great idea for me. I always nail my knuckles on that thing.

      i have a box grater with a mandolin too! but that's actually for slicing cheese in little rectangle slices

    There are good makes and bad ones.
    My go to is a Japanese Mandoline I have an OXO hand version that is good IMO

    Did you ever use your french style mandoline to cut julienne out of raw celery (root) and carrots? I used the hand guard and Igot a bunch of julienne out of it but there was a lot of stuff that was not utilized and it took me a whole lot of force to go through.
    Any hints on what I might be doing wrong?

    Am I going crazy or haven't I seen mandolins that have a small "device" you can use to hold food for you? Some kind of small press with a handle with some kind of non-slip coating on it. Are those any good?

      The one I have came with it, but it works fairly bulky. Good for larger pieces of whatever you're trying to slice, something like potatoes.

    Im trying to decide whether to get the bigger one. I get that i can do bigger veggies, duh, but is the smaller benriner sufficient for most of it? Or is the bigger one easier for smaller stuff for some reason? Or is the bigger one way more cumbersome than its worth?

    Mandolins are so scary, i chopped off 7mm of my pinky and i didnt even felt it. I stopped because of the blood, not the pain. Threw it in the garbage the same night, 10 years with a knife and never had a nick, and my first time with a mandolin im missing pinky flesh 😅😅 i will buy a high quality one and be SUPER careful, time to try again !

    What brand is the French mandoline please I can't find one that's all metal and as wide as your one

      I think I have found them under the Matfer Bourgeat (or just Matfer) and Bron Coucke (or just Bron) brand names.
      Hope that is still useful for you.
